The one hope. THE ONE HOPE i have left for the human race is Christianity. It gives me hope.
I lol'd, don't be offended though, if you like it that's kewl.

I would say companies like Bioware and some amazing games that I can tell are made to be good, not to make a damn buck.

People who make me laugh, there aren't that many.
My religion is a joke to you thats cool
Your religion is a joke to every atheist out there, you can't honestly be surprised, especially on the Escapist.

In any case,I have no "hope". I will die long before the rest of the population, and therefore I don't give a damn what happens to humans as a species. Now assuming you were looking for an answer more along the lines of something I like about humans and society... music? People still enjoy music all around the world and that's nice. Though I won't get started on what's happening to that industry.
His religion is not a joke to all atheists. I myself am atheist but I don't laugh at my Mom and Grandparents. They are Christian and we have religious discussions without it devolving into a shouting match.
OT: Valve and Bioware give me hope.

Allow me to correct myself, his religion is a joke to most atheists.

Oh god, if I reply to you I'll get another temp ban.
So don't troll religion. It's actually very easy when you stop being a dismissive dick for the sake of it.

Remember kids, When a small percent of Religious people are condescending and stupid, we should destroy all religion.

But when a atheist is condescending and stupid, it is perfectly fine.

We only had one hope, John Lennon, and he was killed. When he did, my hope dided with him.
Google: Norman Borlaug

Saved over a billion lives. Billion. With a "B".
Especially if you're in Greenpeace. Google him and then go punch yourself in the face. With a brick.
And the government did 9/11 and Area 51 hides alien technology from us and Kennedy was shot from the grassy knoll and we never landed on the moon.

Any other crazy conspiracy theories I'm missing that have no basis in reality?

Well, look what we've accomplished. We've been to the Moon, we've sent probes into outer space, we have models for the interior of atoms, we have machines and electronics because of our understanding of chemistry and physics, we can talk to people around the globe at an instant, we have exterminated smallpox, we have developed antibiotics, we have libraries that hold millions of books (if you deny the importance of literacy, kindly defenestrate yourself), and we are on the verge of a second technological revolution. You know, humanity doesn't suck. Our accomplishments make us pretty damn respectable, but people who do not comprehend the importance of learning/research are the problem...
that's not OT.

now all you have to do is run for office in 20 years :)
On topic, pardon my absentmindedness
Sure, which office? :D

I don't have any hope for humanity. Our civilization is doomed, i suspect inside the next decade, but no longer than a century. We have been causing nearly unsolvable problems for almost 500 years, our statistical chance of surviving them all is abismal. My only hope, is that i will be able to see my friends and myself survive, and i rate that at 35%-45% chance.

Fuck that. We humans are the greatest thing ever since ever. You point out any other species on this planet that is as cool and awesome and powerful as us and I will slap you. Well I can't, but I'll prove you wrong, easily. And if we ever run into aliens in outer space, they'll either try to kill us right off the bat or get out of our way as we tear shit up in this galaxy. They'll probably think we're trendy and retro cool and come here for lame tourist vacations in places like sweden and canada and ruin everything. Or they'll move to new york and everyone in manhattan would get super pissed about it.
Humans have achieved just about every important achievment that there is on this planet. We've achieved so much we're forced to come up with new things to achieve. If we all collectively had one big trophy case, we'd be out of room and looking for more space to dumpo all these crazy trohpies we made to celebrate how awesome and amazing we are.
When was the last time you heard about the great bee general Zeepo who fought during the great bee-hornet war of '10? Nobody? Hmm...Napolean anyone? I love ice cream.
What about the great beaver architect Bruno? No? Well you can go look on wikipedia for some famous architect's name yourself, I'm pretty sure you get my point.
I don't have a point.
People are awesome, up with people!

As Tommy Lee Jones said in Men in Black "A person is smart, people are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it."

I have faith in individuals. I know people that will do great things, but I can't see humanity going anywhere good.

The term "almost gives me hope in humanity. Almost" seams pretty popular around here. While we can agree that most of humanity is... less then stellar, what are the things that stand so far above, inspiring the rest of the species? What gives you hope humanity, more over, what actually makes you glad to be human?

For me, even when surrounded on all sides by idiocy, buttom lines, and investors demanding safe returns, that a former arm of Lucasfilm's tech department could grow through talent, vision, and pure determination could rise up through the ranks of computer animated shorts, commercials, and the best film run (in both quality and finical gain) possibly ever, to being incharge of the branch of Disney that once DEFINED the company.
By it's nature hope defies rationality.

That said, I think we live in an era of cynicism rather than one of wonder. For whatever reason people like to look at the worst, most depressing, and dirtiest things we can find, we're intrigued by it. Sadly we tend not to look at all the incredible things we do as well. I think the perspective varies, and goes back and forth, we're in one of those eras where we produce the dark and depressing as you can see by our current artwork, the proliferation of goths, and nilistic philsophy. In time the pendelum will swing back the other way.

Some time look at a city, oh sure we have the ghettos and the homeless people and everything else, and that is what people like to focus on. You can however look at the city and it's towering buildings, the lights, the archetecture, the statues, and realize we made this, people as a whole created this thing.

Today we take things like bridges for granted, but some time look at what they cross. Think back to what things were like when people were still limited to foot or horses, and very simple constructions, and what an obstacle this was, yet we managed to build these monolithic bridges which made travel accross some of the greatest obstacles in the world such a trivial matter that people don't even think about it.

Once people looked up into the sky, wondered about things like the moon, and made up stories about what it could be. We went beyond that though and went up there to see for ourselves.

On the front of people themselves, right now we're wired largely to look at the worst and most greedy of the politicians and businessmen, and the people who figure everuone else is ruthless and uncaring so they might as well be too. We look at the massacres, the murders, and problems we cannot solve easily. We tend to ignore the problems we have solved and how in many parts of the world conditions are much better than they have been in trhe past despite how our focus might seem. We tend to forget the people who have travelled all around the world to spread knowlege, medicine, and resources. Sure we have had guys like Pol Pot, but we've also had Mother Theresa. We've had some pretty "dark" celebrities like OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson and their contreversies and vices, but we've also had people like Angelina Jolie who have travelled all over the world for humanitarian reasons.

People talk about how religion is a blight, and focus on things like how many people have died in wars over faith, Catholic child molestation scandals, and other things. People tend to forget about the people who have saved lives because of their faith and doing what they felt was the right thing, or whom travelled into horrible, ravaged, war torn areas oftentimes with a hatred of their paticular faith in order to set up places of sanctuary, learning, and healing. Not to mention how these supposedly "ignorant" institutions preserved books, knowlege, and records through the dark ages when barbarians were trying to destroy every vestige of Rome and civlization. Not to mention how while considered anti-science by many it was scholor monks who delved into genetics and developed key techniques like "Punnet Squares" for example.

Now, understand I am something of a cynic, and can also be pretty militant. I see a lot of bloodshed and darkness in our future, but I believe good can come even from that. I feel that if you look at humanity as a whole it's easy to see plenty of things to give one hope, you just have to broaden your view and not just look at the gutter. People look at really bad things and say "oh noes, I have no faith in humanity" but rarely bother to put it into an overall perspective. Not everything is good, but not everything is bad either.

As far as the internet goes, a lot of people talk about say 4Chan and various similar communities, which proudly claim they are the most shocking recesses of the internet, and yes the Internet has a lot of very dark things on it (and I admit I can occasionally derive some amusement from them). People however tend to forget about all the positive things out there like public domain books, the abillity to find news items and information with a quick search, and the simple ease of communication it allows. A site like 4Chan will point out that "people will use the internet for porn, and to send sick things to each other", and this is both true and darknly amusing, but at the same time people do use it for other things and probably far more frequently.

I say vist "Encyclopedia Dramatica" and "Something Awful" once in a while for some "lulz". But at the same time I visit "The Escapist" to discuss video games and such. Also whenever I want to try and find something out, the first place I go usually is The Internet to at least get pointed in the right direction.

Sorry about yet another very long post. Not sure how many will read it.

Basically the opposite of this. Every time I hear of someone converting away from religions in general, I get a nice tinge of hope.

Of course, I don't mean to insult anyone in saying this. I just think it's silly and archaic, but I do my best to be respectful to those around me with those kinds of beliefs(which usually doesn't matter in the first place, since that subject doesn't come up all that often anyways.)

To give me hope, first the entire middle east region is destroyed, next people decide to drop racism all together as opposed to now where we have revenge on white people, next people get some fucking common sense and think for themselves, then extremists of any form die horribly, and finally every politician dies and are replaced with people who actually worked a fucking day in their lives.
