Funny, I'd never say A7X or Nickelback are overrated because in my experience they just seem to incur an unwarranted amount of hate.

I'd say Muse. I haven't really enjoyed anything after Absolution, although they're not actually bad.

This thread annoys me, because I disagree with so many opinions on here, but what the hey, everyone's got a different opinion. The thing is, most heavily overrated bands also get a lot more hate as they get more popular, so there's never a completely overrated band.

White noise, that's all it is.
They are atleast better than any modern music.... well it's not hard to be better than modern music than it's all screaming, bad words, horrible musicans and usless lyrics that don't mean anything.
That's a ridiculous blanket statement; there's plenty of great stuff out there. Look harder. In fact, what kind of stuff do you like? I'll see if I can offer a few suggestions.

HERE WE GO.

The Beatles (ELO was far better)
Green Day
AC/DC
KISS
Lady GaGa
Pink Floyd (some of their musics okay, I just don't see why everyone says they're so awesome, IMO their album art is better then most of em)
RHCP
Metallica (One is one of my favorite songs, but the rest of their discography isn't all that great)
A7X
Michael Jackson
Muse
Nirvana
Guns and Roses

I'll probably think of more later but that's it for now.

I'm not sure why all the hate on Led Zeppelin, though. There are more songs than Stairway to Heaven, you know.

Most people criticizing the Beatles seem to miss the point: describing their music (nowadays) as seeming "boring" or "nothing special" is (IMO) facile.
The Beatles are significant because of their impact on contemporary music, not just the intrinsic value of their work. Oh, and "Yesterday" remains a textbook example of a great pop song.

OT:
Each and every band from the All Time Low school of muzak. Blink-182 & Paramore don't escape this.
Green Day have been poor since "American Idiot" (inclusive).
"Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine. One of the greatest albums ever, yes. The greatest, nope.
Anything Simon Cowell is in any way involved in.
Occasional tracks aside, Oasis appear nothing special.
U2 Should have stopped after the "Joshua Tree" (which is almost as good as people say it is).
AC/DC, Motorhead, Guns and Roses. All one-song bands.
Pendulum - remove "Streamline" from their work and they're very average.
Michael Jackson - remove the presentation and there is very little to interest one.
Lady Gaga. All talk, no trousers. (occasionally literally...)

Oh, and I know that this is a "no flame" thread, but if anyone mentions Radiohead, I will destroy you.

Last year I would thrown down the gauntlet and have at you, now, however, I know differently.

Oddly enough, you have Christopher Nolan, and not my massive Radio head fan brother and most of my friends.

Now, I know the closing credits of The Prestige us Thom Yorke's own 'Analyse' and it isn't a Radiohead song...

But it got me interested and then I found joys like Karma Police, Street Spirit, Everything in its Right Place amongst so many others.

I think anyone putting Radiohead up as overrated, while not deserving outright destruction, certainly should go away and listen to their stuff and form an opinion.

Muse and Avenged are on this growing list? *rage!!!* Although I suppose 'overrated' is fair enough. As long as we're only discussing their new stuff... ¬¬
OT:
Linkin Park
Metallica
Kings of Leon
Linkin Park
Paramore. Uhhm. Yeah especially paramore. I always feel that the only thing they've got going for them is Hayley Williams' body and nothing else.
U2
RATM
Linkin Park
SOAD
ACDC
Airbourne
Bring me the horizon
Led Zep
Linkin Park
The Beatles
Disturbed (dont get me wrong they have some awesome songs... but they're a bit 'samey')
Kaiserchiefs
The Arctic Monkeys
Lostprophets
Linkin Park
You me at 6
All American Rejects

That'll do.
I like one or two songs from most of these bands, but they are not gods. They are not the best band evaarrr. Yes, I know I put a certain band down more than once...
EDIT: almost forgot lady gaga. But she kinda goes without saying, as does kesha, katie perry, pink... Leona the moaner... uhhm. And so on.

EDIT PART 2: Guns and Roses. Saw em at reading. Never Again.

Any and all Modern Day bands. They may have 1 or 2 good songs, but they'll never top a majority of the bands from the 60's and 70's.

Metallica - They're good at what they do and such but a lot of people I know tote them as the best thing ever which just irks me

Muse - Yeah they write some good songs but a lot of the time they just appear pretentious well to me anyway

Radiohead - I'm not writing this to piss the people above me, I have listened to their music and found its pretty good but they just seem to be doing the same style of songs over and over to me. They are a good band they just seema bit too overhyped for my tastes in comparison to their music.

Pretty much every band with a devoted fanbase, which is like every band ever.

Fact is, those people praise their band completely into the sky resulting in pretty much every band being overrated.

But I honestly don't give a damn.

I love The Beatles like many other fans, but be honest; a lot of their songs are really simple pop songs, especially lyric-wise. Love love love and more love.

But that doesn't stop me from loving them to bits, of course.

Blast, foiled again! :)
I was just about to post the same. Every single artist and band in every single genre at any time in history has been overrated by fans. Speak to the right (or wrong) people, and you'll get a highly biased opinion of them.
Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Chuck Berry, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach etc. may all be overrated, but that doesn't mean I don't love them to bits.

Edit: I actually didn't see you wrote that you "loved them to bits" as well. That's what a short attention span does to you I suppose.

Second edit: Now that I think about it, the entire concept of something being overrated is sort of silly, isn't it? For something to be overrated, there has to be some "true" rating which it has been rated over. But if music is subjective, how can there be one rating to which it belongs entirely?

Metallica are the most overrated band on the planet they were so much better when James Hetfield was a drunk.

others include:

Iron maiden
Coldplay
Aerosmith
The beatles
Green Day
Pantera
Slayer
Radiohead
Offspring

I hear a lot of Muse bashing here but one quality they have over 90% of bands these days is that they are incredible live. they never pull off the usual "you guys are they best crowd we have ever played" bullshit that tends to dribble out of bands like Greenday and Metallica as soon as they stand on a stage.

Bring Back Kyuss!
