Which character did you just want to protect from just...everything? Not just enemies? For me, thats aura from the ./hack games/ The games after mutation sucked, but whenever Aura showed up, or I even just heard her theme, I just wanted to hug her and protect her from the evils of the world.

EDIT: you can also use any media, I was just stuck on Aura when I posted this

Ashley from Resident Evil 4. Sure, she was a tagalong...but she was smart enough to duck and get out of the way, useful in a number of positions where Leon alone would've been out of luck, and even tough enough for a section where Leon doesn't come along.

Escorted characters without a death wish are rare enough that she earned my respect.

Eh, is this games only, or other things as well?
Because Satoko Hojo from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni/Kai certainly set off my protective instincts >.>
Would have died to protect her, had that been asked >.>
Can't think of that ever happening in a game, though... it might have, I just don't remember.

For me definitely has to be a "Little Sister" from Bioshock (1 and 2). I mean, I'm a bit of a jerk but they're little girls for god's sake. Plus in Bioshock 2, I felt bad every time they fearfully said "you're not going to hurt me are you daddy? I've been good, really."

Two off the top of my head stand out (though the actual number is much higher, especially considering my typical genres, and the fact that I hate having my subordinates die on me).

From two of my <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.135672-Neutral-Drow-reviews-A-Drug-That-Makes-You-Dream>favorite <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.206764-Neutral-Drow-reviews-Kana-Little-Sister>games.

Harm either, and I will murder you where you stand.

I don't really feel very connected to fictional characters, but I guess Tali from the Mass Effect games comes the closest simply because of how easy it is to relate to her as a character. It doesn't stop me from yelling at her when she blocks my line of fire, though.

Lucy from the Assassin's Creed series. I liked her from the first game, and she only got better in 2 and Brotherhood. She's really a great character, especially if you choose to do all of the dialogue options with her throughout the 3 games. Brotherhood really had an impact on me with this fondness for her character, because she actually has quite a pivotal role in the game.

Every.Single.Marine.In.Halo.Combat.Evolved.

I love those guys! Even if their programming is a bit weird, I feel terrible when they die.

Yukiko Amagi in Persona 4 and Amy from Soul Calibur

Yukiko because she was a great team mate, and I sorta fell for her. If things ever went south and she looked like she would die, I just cut my losses and ran.

Amy cause I just did fall for her, so I always fought harder when her in the soul calibur series, and if a character tagged along, i used them as much as possible. It made it hard to level Amy up, but I eventually forced myself to not be so protective.

Oh yes and for me if we can go with anime series as well as games I would have to say fuuko from clannad her and her starfish.

No one in games I use them to release my pent up aggression from work so anyone cute and cuddly is going to get smeared under the booot of my heavily armoured space marine

two things:

-the little sisters in Bioshock 2

-Dogmeat in Fallout 3

The little sisters mostly on my nice play-through, but I loved Dogmeat like a brother, and I always made sure to tell him "good boy" after or battle or if he found me something.

Chris Redfield (no, I'm serious). He's just some guy trying to protect innocent people, finds out his partner is still alive and all he wants is to keep her safe. For a guy with arms bigger than his head he is such a softie and I can't help but be protective (which is why I give Sheva a Rifle or an unlimited ammo MG (because she is such a good shot with a rifle, and she's actually pretty good if you give her a Machine Gun)).

EDIT: On the opposite end of the spectrum though. Every 'unique' character in the FFTA games except Hurdy (Bards away!!!). Even the main character, with their ridiculous, non-changing outfit. Given the option, I'd kill them all (and in FFTA I normally did get Montblanc killed)

Everybody in any Fire Emblem game. The fact that they have permanent deaths doesn't make things any better, either.

ODST troopers in Halo 3. They're special and whenever they die I just have to keep restarting the mission until they survive through it.
