Title may be a bit misleading, so let me clarify: I am not being pessimistic against Sony. I thoroughly enjoyed the news coming out of E3. Watching Xbone explode, fist pumping after reading Sony news, laughed at the instructional video on sharing PS4 game, the whole she-bang.

After I calmed down a bit though, I realized, all Sony did was not screw up. All the current consoles had everything the PS4 is promising (though publishers recently played with DRM and always online nonsense.)

Again, I'm not hating on Sony (at least, I don't think I am) and there is no way I'll be buying an Xbone. If anything, I wanna know why we piss ourselves like excited puppies at the news Sony isn't gonna screw us over. Have we really come to the point where no bad news is the same as great news?
True, they took a stand against DRM...which they should be expected to do ANYWAY. Heck, Nintendo confirmed they were against DRM as well MONTHS AGO and ya don't see people showering them with gold medals. It is kind of an example of exactly Sony being GREAT, but MS screwing up THAT BADLY. Take away the MS factor and they really had a middling conference with FFXV and KH3 being the only standout announcements

They actually didn't reveal anything particularly interesting about the console... It's just that with all that DRM and always online thing that happened with the XB1 people were afraid Sony would follow suit and were (justifiably) relieved when their fears were proven false....
This is where we're at right now... SIGH...
It's sad when the ability to play or borrow games unhindered can be considered a plus, rather than a given.

Just to drive the point home, let's consider the fact that last gen Sony's how to share games vid would have probably been considered stupid or redundant, rather than friggen hilarious.

You are exactly right. But since most companies go out of their way to fix things that aren't broken, invariably breaking everything in the process, even something as simple as a company not screwing up is hailed as a win. And it is a win... But it's also a commentary on how bad everything else must be.

It's cheaper, it shows off good games (Infamous: second son looks fun! Plus: Kingdom hearts 3.), in short: it met people's expectation.

It isn't about us. It's about them. Our standards are not low. We've just been highly disappointed for a good long while. Not screwing up is a sign that they're going to step in the right direction even more, because it demonstrates that ironically-limited thing, common sense.

Well, i'm fortunate enough to have a decent PC that should be able to run Watch Dogs (which looks fucking great by the way) and that. I'm not really bothered to get either until some really, really good games come out and the PS4 price has gone down a bit.

Srsly tho, who the hell is going buy a Xbox One (fuck that name) except people who are horribly misinformed/ignorant about it and super hardcore Microsoft fanboys? Not to mention it's seemingly made for a market that either does not exist or is already fully catered to by Apple and the like so why even bother? Also it's a PC. A PC with shitty DRM and questionable business practices

Also i'm going to look this up but I think some of its policies are illegal in the UK/EU. I think.

EDIT: Oh I forgot to answer the question, basically not much but Microsoft's X1 looks so, so, so bad in comparison they don't NEED to try very hard to wow people. They can go "we're nothing like *that* guy, buy this instead"

Remember why the 360 was ahead of the PS3 to begin with? It was because they had really solid games both at launch and well beyond that, also XBL, while having a charge is actually damn good.

The PS3 was marketed as a gaming console/Blu Ray player and had trouble getting rolling on the game front because it's more difficult to develop for than PC and 360. It came out later as well but whatever.

Legal musing edit: Yeah it does seem to heavily violate the terms of first sale. Basically, you buy something, the company you bought it from can have no say on what you do with it (heavily simplified I know.) In other words, you buy something, it is now yours :O

Microsoft seems to kick that in the head by saying you cannot sell/lend this (product that you bought from us) to your friends fuck you.

You do know Europe exists right Microsoft? And we have considerably better consumer protection laws than the US... Just saiyan.

Hey it would be interesting if the X1 gets picked up on this and gets banned until they change their policy or something. Sounds hella interesting.

A few days ago, I watched an interview in where the interviewee said this: The gaming industry is not defined by success, it's defined by failure. Companies succeed because their competition ****ed up. The Playstation rose to power because Nintendo had outdated technology and screwed over 3rd party developers. The Xbox 360 won last gen because Sony screwed up with their pricing. Sony's now returning to the top because Microsoft got stupid.

Sure, Sony didn't really do anything revolutionary, but the thing is, we don't really go out looking for revolutionary. All we really want is good games, and for everything else to run smoothly.

Nothing in fact they even made playing online cost money now just like the 360 and Xbone which is why I stopped playing online with those consoles in the first place.

The simple fact is Microsoft just messed up so badly that it was a relief to see Sony not follow suit, Nintendo would be getting more praise as well but they are still trying to recover from the Wii damaging their image.

There are no immediate titles on the PS4 that have grabbed me but I have not discounted buying one unlike the Xbone. With the PS4 and WiiU I will probably get one in the fullness of time when a few games I want are out on them I probably wont be playing online anymore though.

I was happy about what went down but I'm also laughing at the way it happened.

Correct me if I'm wrong buuuut....

Sony tease the controller. At the time rumors were strong that next gen was just around the corner but the controller sealed it.

Microsoft seemed to think "oh shit" and quickly rushed out to "out do" Sony by revealing a whole console.

In the rush they marketed the console to the wrong people, "hi gamers we think you need to watch more tv"

Microsoft seemed to stumble, "the xbone will always need to be online! ..... what we actually mean is the xbone will have to check in every 24 hours" etc.

Sony never said a word, except "wait till E3"

They seemingly wanted to correct the image it was only a tv box too quickly and put themselves first at E3, instead of waiting till after Sony and maybe dropping there price.

Sony come out and say almost constantly "this is primarily a gaming console" then to the end of the conference openly mock Microsoft by just outright stating "no DRM, positive attitude towards used games and cheaper", no blurry lines, no PR waffle ... they just straight said it.

It was perfect, of course they never knew microsoft would be so "anti gamer" but it was masterfully played, they gave microsoft just enough rope to hang themselves then pushed the chair away by just letting them speak, then saying the opposite.

Not conforming to negative developments in consumer relations, rights and convenience is a lot more than "not screwing up" in my opinion.
I'm bummed about the PSN+ thing, but I guess I'll see how things shake out a year or two post release.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally coming which alone is cause to celebrate. Final Fantasy XV looks nice too but they've looked good since...I'm going to say 9. It looks like user-friendliness was the name of the game though: Don't have internet or, have poor internet? Not a problem if you wanna play PS4 games. Do you like buying, selling and, trading games with friends or, at a local mom-n-pop shop? More power to ya dude, Sony doesn't mind! Don't wanna spend $500+ on launch day? No guarantees there but the PS4 is a hundred cheaper than the 360.
...
I missed the release date, did Sony announce when we can buy one of these things?

---

I'm on the fence about PS+ being a requirement for online multiplayer...on the one hand, it's paying to utilize a function of the game you just bought. On the other hand PS+ seems to be really generous when it comes to sales and, free stuff. If it's later announced that you can also join PS++ or, PS+Platinum then they can fuck off.

100 bucks cheaper and no restriction on used games...
If that's so important for the console gamers, then Sony did all they had to do.

Sony releasing their console at 100 bucks cheaper is the killing blow.

Microsoft might have been able to shrug off the hostility of the gaming press and dedicated gamers, but even casual gamers who don't get riled about what they're doing are going to pay attention to how much more the console costs.

I really don't see how Microsoft recover from this.

Sony saw a chance to take a devastating shot at its main competition and took it. It's just good that it works out in favour of gamers.

The ideas aren't revolutionary. Gamers have known about them for years. Many publishers too. The basic premise is this: "Don't treat your customers like shit and they will give you their custom". Microsoft made a mistake in thinking that restrictions and requirements placed on customers was an immovable status quo. It was expected. After all, Microsoft's only crime is taking moves to protect their revenue, customers can cope with jumping through hoops, they expect it by now. What are they going to do about it? Not buy our console? Not play the game they wanted to?

Well all it takes is one to change the status quo and Sony's move today represents a massive coup. And it was a risk too. They will definitely lose out a bit in game sales from people buying pre-owned or people trading and swapping and lending and renting. But they're going to get it back by making a console that's more accessible, more under friendly, as well as cheaper which is what kneecapped them last time around. All in all simply by removing the crap they have created a much more desirable product that their major opponent. Suddenly a lot of people who don't care for consoles are going to be interested. I know because I'm one of them, (not saying they've sold me just yet but given that I'm considering it and that my last console was a grey brick Game Boy I think that's significant progress.)

I gotta agree. The last console I owned was the Nintendo64. I played a ton of PS2 games (and it was great), and I've played games on my friend's 360.

But I have been pretty much a PC gamer for 13-14 years now... and Sony, just by not screwing up, has me thinking I will probably buy a PS4 to complement my PC.

Well done indeed *slow clap*

to be honest, I'd written Sony off.
I'd said they were just delaying announcing always online/killing used sales, as a way of avoiding bad PR for as long as possible.
I take it all back. I dont know when I'll get a PS4 as PC is my main gaming machine, but when the time comes to replace the PS3 in my living room, it'll be with a PS4

To say what everyone else has been saying. It is true that all they did was not screw up. But they did it in such a fantastic way. They showed interesting looking games. Showed that they were for gamers. and then absolutely ***** slapped microsoft at the end.

My only worry is that battlefront 3 will an xbone exclusive. This isn't true right?
