What did you think of Man of Steel?

Well I liked it or to put it another way against two other summer blockbusters Iron Man 3 and Into Darkness so far Man Of Steel is the best of the three and my god at the start of the year still ridding the post Avengers high I would never thought I would say MOS would be better than Ironman.

I liked both movies. Not mad about either, but I'll posit Man of Steel is more of a "superhero movie" than Iron Man 3, which was more of a regular action movie with a super suit (or parts of) thrown in now and then.

So some fridge logic hit me.

Pretty sure Superman committed genocide in this movie. Like, it was sorta in self-defense because Zod didn't decide to terraform Mars instead (for literally no reason whatsoever), but Supes openly acknowledges it when he says "The Kryptonians had their chance" right before he brings about the destruction of his race.

I mean Zod was a dick, but at least he had a reason for doing what he did and was backed by the "no one mention terraforming Mars" plot hole, but Supes just committed genocide and decided to live with aliens because, uh, he looks like them?

Basically some demi-gods tried to commit genocide for no good reason, then another demi-god committed genocide because he didn't think an entire race should have the right to live because they "had their chance", and then he point blank tells the military that they have to listen to him on his own terms.

I'd be pretty scared to live on that planet.

Not only Superman commits something like genocide in the movie, it's never very clear WHY he prefers humans to kriptonians. Nothing in this movie really differentiates one from the other. Humanity is just as bent in destroying its home planet, we're just not as fast.

And let's not forget his big line before the act: "Krypton had its chance." Yup, sure are embodying the best of both worlds, Kal.

Yup. Once Superman says this, nothing's stopping him from someday going "Earth had its chance". And I thought Batman was the dark one!

Wait Terraforming earth? Is that what they said in the movie? Because you don't need to Terraform earth. It's already earth like. If they mean to change it to be like krypton that wouldn't be fucking Terraforming.

First off, although terraforming literally means changing a celestial body to be habitable to humans, it is still considered terraforming(some refer to it as reverse terraforming, but I just chalk that up to lazy semantics similar to reverse sexism or reverse racism. They both technically mean the same exact thing). Zod is literally trying to change Earth to something more viable for what Kryptonians are more accustom to.

And the whole reason why Zod wanted to terraform Earth into the new Krypton was because he did not want to share the planet with the humans. So don't bring up the point that Earth's atmosphere was already viable to the Kryptonians.

No reverse racism and reverse sexism is the same thing as racism and sexism. Reverse-terraforming literally means the exact opposite of terraforming. But whatever words change and after a quick Google search it appears most people use it in a interchangeable way. So it's fine I guess but, it's still kind of annoying.

Remind me though - does the movie at some point explain Zod's hatred for mankind? Or is it just a spur of the moment thing? Because that's how it felt like. Also, couldn't he have used another planer instead? Seems like a win-win to me.

"Man of Steel" was great. Easily in my top 5 of 2013 by the end of the year.

Figures that you would be the one to so succinctly lay out my thoughts.

It's actually a decent movie. I don't have a strong sense of what and how should Superman behave. To me every adaptation is a fresh work from scratch and deserves to be criticized for what it is, not for what it isn't.

I think what he meant to say was that by eschewing a woman's sexuality they weaken her identity as a woman. At least that's what I think he meant. Touchy subject to approach at best.

Thats what I was thinking, I truly don't understand it though, It would be bad if her Kryptonian armour had a boob window, and I thought she was pretty much the most bad ass character in the film, she gave no fucks.

Well, the armor is kinda sexualized. It's essentially a steel bikini, with a catsuit beneath. Nothing terribly practical about it. Everybody else is seen wearing full body armor.

She also shown to be much faster than the other Kryptonians, so maybe her armor, or lack thereof, is for more flexibility.

Also, I'm having a hard time seeing how anyone but extremely fundamentalist Islamists could find that armor sexualized. The breasts aren't remotely pronounced, and every little bit of her is covered but her face (and even that is, most of the time).

I think she becomes more powerful than the others AFTER losing the armor and fully exposing herself to the sun. Like Zod as well. And I really doubt the bikini pattern is for flexibility. Why isn't everybody else wearing it then?

I loved it. After seeing the last one where Superman was in a hospital bed for the last 30 minutes, I was completely entertained by seeing super people beat the shit out of eat other and knocking buildings down. The critics have got this one wrong.

The action was really good though a bit too CG heavy, especially the last fight. But then again there's probably no other way to do it. The wandering meditative stuff I also really liked, though it would've been better if they had a central idea he was working towards, which isn't really clear. Pa Kent wanted him to help people but also keep his identity a secret or something?

What I really didn't like was the Krypton/Codex/Genetic destiny backstory. It was completely unnecessary and an extremely convoluted way to explain why Kal-El is the only one sent off planet. Also why did they even bother sending Zod to the Phantom Zone? What a great punishment - get saved from your planet's destruction while your jailors are all killed.

Saw it over the weekend and i thought it was kind of meh which bums me the hell out. It looks good but the story was kind of underwhelming.

It's essentially a wetsuit with scant metal bands on it, but while his changes in looks have been criticized for many things, becoming more sexualised was never one of them. (Cortana on the other hand...)

I would personally say that, while it is noticably not as practical as the men's armour, it must be noted that she did originally wear proper armour up until the phantom zone:

I'd be curious to know why her second armour set was noticably more... bikini like than the men's which didn't really change apart from their chest plate, and I think we should all remember that whatever armour she is wearing over her bodysuit it's still more cover than superman, who doesn't have any armour at all, or a shirt for some of the opening scenes.

Speaking of Supes' costume: how the hell did he get it? He steps into his post-modern Fortress of Solitude, and when he steps out he's wearing it! Where the hell did he get it? What is it supposed to represent? Why does it fit him so perfectly? And when did he shave? Because he was Wolverine-hairy when he stepped in...

I actually really liked it, which I didn't think I would considering that the reviews I saw beforehand were incredibly negative, so I knew the problems it had, but they didn't really bother me during the film. One of the complaints I heard was that it was too long, but the film kinda flew by for me (no pun intended).

Also, the first 10 minutes reminded me that Superman and Goku from DBZ has pretty much the exact same origin story : P
