I think the biggest epic fail that humanity come to, is our modern culture. I'm pretty sure this is not how our ancestors would like to see our fate. All this media that dulls people, vulgarity, stupidity and idiots opinion that power is better than intellect.

Religion. All of them. No single incident of death will ever do more damage than religion has. Their casualty numbers still going strong.

Edit: I wont bother responding anymore. I firmly stand by my view on this though. But I am being called a villian for hating something that hated me first for being different.

I am not wrong for hating murderers. I am not wrong for hating people who trample on freedom. I am not wrong for being for equal rights. Those all describe what religion often is.

Damn, you got a lot of shit for this opinion. And you know what? I can see why you have this point of view and to a certain extent I agree. The only difference is that I don't believe religion was our biggest fail, I believe letting scripture and religion run our countries was.

Back at a time when you spoke out against religion you'd only be ostracised. But after the dark ages you'd probably face capital punishment for it. And that is why I consider letting scripture run our lives as something that's far worse. Burning witches, burning gays, burning anyone with a spine, burning anyone with a disagreement, burning anyone with an opinion, the list goes on. And I find it tasteless that so much people defend these actions simply because religion 'also did good'

True morality isn't form of currency. You cannot do a few good deeds to justify the many worse ones. And furthermore, a few small good deeds shouldn't hold justification for the organization to continually do bad. In fact, this nonsense even goes on today. Just because a church gives money to charities (But probably most of it to their own churches) it does not justify their treatment of homosexuals, nor there anti - gay 'charities' and it definitely shouldn't hold leverage to justify how they spread lies about condoms in a continent with an aids problem.

And this is just the nonsense they're doing today, in an era where we have this big fucking machine that constantly creates anti - matter, have a glass that's stronger than steel, and the internet where just moments after I post this message an European will probably call me an asshole. In an age of all this we still exist in a world where religion holds a great deal of weight of how minorities are treated and how the government runs our country.

And that's why letting scripture run our lives is the worlds biggest epic fail. It's been holding us back and beating us down and it still is to this very day. It isn't a coincidence that the chains that bind us get looser when religions grip on our society does as well. There is nothing wrong with religion as long as they're off in there little corner doing whatever they want with other religious people, but there's a serious problem if it is in the hands of some self righteous king or a greedy politician. And trust me, there's always going to be a self righteous king and a bunch of greedy politicians.

Besides a country run by scripture I suppose my other epic fails are -

1. Fox News and anyone that watches it. Seriously, how can so much 'Patriotic' Americans watch something that's not even by an American? The guy that runs Fox is Australian. So if you think Fox News is there for America think again.

2. JFswift proposed Nuclear Technology, I agree. Chances are they help prevent wars (Due to no one wanting to have a nuclear bomb shoved up there ass) but I still hate them because of how much money they're wasting and all the animals they probably kill when they're being tested. Oh right, and all the innocent people they kill.

3. 50% of what Religion believes in because that fifty percent contradicts the other fifty percent.

4. Right Wing politicians on everything.

5. Left Wing politicians in spending our money.

6. Humanity in general. It's always just one disappointment after another.

Merchandising for really creepy and stupid things...

such as...

I actually do mean it, I say we can't really change history because every single part of it has made the world it is today, and to me the most epic fail is actually the fact that people make stupid pointless crap and people actually buy it.

Why must you ruin a perfectly good thread with extremely personal (and small-picture) rhetoric? This is Off-Topic, save it for the Religion and Politics forum, where I can ignore it easier.

OT: Getting itself trapped in an unsupportable standard of living. Talk about lack of foresight.

ummmm..... you do realise that the Tc asked for opinions right? Saelune just voiced her opinion and I happen to agree with her. throughout history religion has been the cause of war, starvation, corruption, a halt to the progress of science, and a way to alienate groups of people.... It is by far humanity's most EPIC FAIL.

EDIT: also Twilight comes in at a close second ¬_¬ stupid sparkly vampires }:(...

Hold it right there pilgrim. Saying that humanity would be better off if religion never existed is one of the most ignorant thing a person can say. Why? Because religion has been around has been around longer than complex society. It has motivated countless actions both good and bad, it has affected every civilization in one way or another. Religion has been so involved in the development of human society that it is impossible to tell whether we would be better or worse off if it never existed, no one I repeat NO ONE is qualified to make such a statement.
This whole thread is ignorant then. I see what religion does on a global scale. Its mostly bad. Its mostly murder. Its mostly opressing rights of everyone. I hear constant stories of the bad of religion, with most good things caused by religion being merely fluff tales that barely gets past the local news. I get tired of being put as the villian for hating something that has caused so much pain and suffering. But I get tired of what religion does more, so I guess I have to deal with it.
Plus don't forget how religion held back scientific discovery for many years

We actually needed World War II, without it I dread to think what war we could have had a decade later.

And I have to agree with Burning down the Library, even thinking about it makes me mad.

He does have a good point. Regardless of the fact that people will kill each other anyway, a massive amount of bloodshed has been committed in the name of religion. That's not trolling. It's a fact.

I'd say the religious wars fought. I'm a practicing Catholic and I think top of this list are the crusades, it was a big "shame on you" moment for us. Of course there are several others as well, wars that have been fought for the "salvation of souls" through killing. These wars are worse that wars fought for nation or even economic reasons as these reasons are usually defensive when there is almost nothing defensive about the crusades or other 'holy wars.'

And I don't mean to be anti-religious, I believe that these wars could and would have been fought anyway for other reasons. It's just when people take something that inherently tells people *Not To Kill Others* and uses it as an excuse to kill, it kinda makes my blood boil. I respect religious faith (both mine and others, even the lack of faith) and it makes me pissed when leaders use that faith to fuel their dreams of conquest.

I'm actually going to support Saelune here, partially. Religion's caused a lot of shit.

Not saying I'm against it completely, but frankly it's probaly caused a larger kill count than any single war or disaster has.

i agree with you saelune. more blood has been spilled in the name of religion than any thing else in the history of mankind. mankinds ethnic and religious differences will always cause wars, because it is simply human nature to hate what is different.

also. justin beiber. epic fail right there.

I'd have to say Religion.
Second to that, would be auto-tune.
Third would be... pesticides.

It is also a fact that religion is one of the few reasons the middle ages didn't turn into a free-for-all bloodbath. It is also the fact that Christianity and Confucianism were both used to unite a large pool of people with different ethnical-cultural backgrounds, prevent civil wars, hell, even Islam did this. It is also a fact that the Church is responsible for a large section of charities and freedom movements (the Church is, at the moment, an advocate of gender and race equality ). Almost every religion has been teaching people to be "good", not to murder, to be respectful and etc., which was the basis for Law for a great deal of human history (and is still so today). It is also a fact that it keeps helping people today ( just see how many ex-drug addicts, alcholocs and pornstars were helped by the church).

But he didn't know that, he doesn't care enough to do so and most likely neither do your (assumptions). Religion has been, for the most part, uniting people, and ensuring peace. But no, most of today kids on the internet saw the words "Religion = Cursade/Jihad" and started to spew misinformation left and right. Yes, due to religion bad things have happened, but this is mostly people being people, far from the worst thing in history.

Not to mention that new archeological evidance suggest that Temples may predate agriculture leading scientists to believe that the first cities may have been build on spiritual foundation
