Goldeneye 64... what more is there to say? - it was just epic ^^
I didn't even know there was a campaign!
I exaggerate but I never actually played it (the campaign)

I have to say Call of Duty 4. It had a perfect combination of epic moments and set pieces coupled with some great surprises and a very believable, tight story.

Halo 3 is my runner up. It may have been a lame story for many people, but to me it was amazing.

Postal 1, 2 and the upcoming 3.
Because an FPS doesn't really need a storyline, just a couple of guns, explosions, targets and places where you need to be.

Oh, and fire. Lots of fire. Fire is my friend....

yeah, i know that the multiplayer sucked away (almost) all your attention, but YES, there actually was a campaign, and it was jus as good as the multiplayer :)

HL2, Red Faction 2, and several James Bond games are great by yourself, but get 3 other people and Left 4 Dead is unmatched amounts of fun. Shallow and mindless, but fun as hell.

There's a lot of FPS campaigns worth mentioning: Deux Ex, Half Life, Half Life 2 + Episodes, FEAR, Crysis, CoD4 (Pripyat anyone), CoD MW2 (I liked it, OK?! Don't judge me), Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Return to the castle Wolfenstein etc.

But I was very very positively surprised by Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. Great story. Search for ancient gold, the brotherly conflict. It was really great. And the atmosphere was very western like. The desert, the forest, the towns, Mexico etc. Everything felt very authentic. I am a big western fan and I really liked the game very much.

story wise?

Theif games. the story can be intresting if your sneak your way around to hear all of the diolauge options. but then again you can just as easily miss them by leaving a wake of dead bodies.

Mirrors Edge. kinda of a Meh game but the story did keep my playing the game inspite of the hate i have for the game.

Dark Messiah. another some what meh game that kept me playing because of the story and charicter interaction. and what can i say, a mostly naked evil succubus spirit serving as my own personal guardian and advisor is a pretty awsome twist.

Half-Life(s) Probably one of the bests out there because there really isn't a story told to the player. much like the charicters in a book you're not told the story... you live the story. only when you look back to you realise the story you've written with your actions.

Modern Warfare 2.

It was the perfect roller-coaster, fast-paced and adrenaline-filled without overstaying its welcome.

Halo: Combat Evolved, no question. It's visually beautiful, its simple story is paced and told perfectly, and the gameplay is simply phenomenal.

Half-Life 2 would probably be my runner up.
Seconded.

I loved the campaign in halo 3:ODST, i know people say they just made it quiet, but it's the kind of game that feels like its just meant to be played calmly by yourself, i was very immersed in it, and i loved how it didn't have too much of a multiplayer other than firefight, it saved all the noisy "pro's" etc ruining the experience.

Halo 3 had my favorite campaign in the areas where you're fighting Covenant, and Reach was great too. CoD 4 was awesome all-around, although I didn't like the sniping level as much as other players.

In my own opinion, I have to nominate Blacksite...that's Blacksite:Area 51 for any Americans reading this ^.^

Now I will admit the game is pants, with the gameplay bordering too close to the Call of Duty series, and the bad guys looking like they've just walked away from a Half Life/Quake convention...but the story and dialog was actually pretty good (even if it could get Anvilicious sometimes - looking at you Summers!), and I'm often of the opinion that it shouldn't have been a game, but a low budget TV Show or Movie.
Someone actually liked Blacksite?

The campaign in CoD4 was really good. It wasn't the over the top bullshit that was MW2.

Edit: Thought it was for war games, in that case, the best FPS campaign for me is Bioshock.
COD 1 United Offensive had an awesome campagin, you go from being in a jeep with a 50.cal mowing down germans, to a RAF bomber gunner, to blowing up a bridge in holland, and blowing up an entire base, going through to escape on a PT boat, first driving on a motorcycle. Then your in a truck in Russia, when the train blows up, then your in a tank, then your on a AA gun taking down airplanes before finally winning.
