MMModern Warfare 2.

Yes.

Yes, I am serious.

I enjoyed the hell out of it - it was fast-paced, well-acted, genuinely fun to play and had a ton of great set-pieces.

Half-Life 2 and the episodes had excellent storytelling and a great plot. First place for HL2.

My runner up would be Call of Duty 4. It was epic and enjoyable without being over the top. 'All ghillied up' remains one of my favorite missions from any game.

Pretty much these, in no particular order I might add.

Also the original Half-Life and XIII would be on my list too.

MW2

And shut up all you haters. It`s a 4 hour-ish intense campaign, not a mediocre 10 hour one..it`s just epic.

Halo 1. Beyond a shadow of a doubt for me. That is the game against which I measure all other FPSs. I liked HL2 a lot, but Halo gets me all nostalgic, so it wins.

Metro 2033. Good gameplay, intense combat and remember when I said that Bioshock is atmospheric (you've probably suffered some damage to your head if you don''t)? Well, you can multiply that by 3. The metro was a really scary place and the Russian voiceacting was really good and fit the world well.

Halo: Combat Evolved, no question. It's visually beautiful, its simple story is paced and told perfectly, and the gameplay is simply phenomenal.

Half-Life 2 would probably be my runner up.
And I would like to add Breakdown. Despite it's flaws and challenging gameplay, the last third and the end are just so damn satisfying.

Edit: I seem to have forgotten to add STALKER SoC the first time around, so this fixes that.

Metroid Prime was truly outstanding and wins for top one time experience.

I would say Half-Life 2 wins for most repayable campaign because of how fun it is to just pick up and play.

I loved Castle Wolfenstein 3D and the 6 level Doom demo. I played the living heck out of them. On consoles, my first gen 6 experience was Red Faction on the PS2 and I loved it. But my most relevatory experience with a FPS was still Halo Combat Evolved. I really liked 2 and 3, and I'm playing ODST, but Halo 1 campaign was something very special. I envy anyone that hasn't played it yet as you have that terrific experience ahead of you.

I though F.E.A.R. - It was a perfectly paced story with lots of action. The add-ons and sequels sucked though

These two, definitely. Especially FEAR. I've just started playing through it again. And I agree whole-heartedly about the FEAR sequels and add-ons not being as good as the original. I was hugely disappointed with FEAR 2: Project Origin and FEAR 3 doesn't look like it's going to be good either.

Thief: Deadly Shadows and Duke Nukem 3D are also just good fun.

In my own opinion, I have to nominate Blacksite...that's Blacksite:Area 51 for any Americans reading this ^.^

Now I will admit the game is pants, with the gameplay bordering too close to the Call of Duty series, and the bad guys looking like they've just walked away from a Half Life/Quake convention...but the story and dialog was actually pretty good (even if it could get Anvilicious sometimes - looking at you Summers!), and I'm often of the opinion that it shouldn't have been a game, but a low budget TV Show or Movie.
I have never heard any thing other than the obvious leg coverings referred to as 'pants', but it sounds like some excellent slang to start using. Please clarify.

As for my answer, I'm gonna have to be unoriginal and say Half Life 2. I don't really like Gordon as a character (his silence is just too awkward in too many places), but I love the world and all the other characters in it.

id have to say the original half life. it just kinda goes "you are a scientist, now go to work." then the shit hits the fan and you dont know what the hell is going on(like it would play out in real life) and you have to figure out what is going on and save your hide

Half-life 2 and especially if you allow for the episodes to be considered as part of it.

Deus Ex is close second, because its more of an offshoot than a true fps.

Halo: Combat Evolved did a really good job of making the story feel epic and all important, something that its sequels failed to do for me. *Note* this wouldnt be on here if it hadn't been ported to PC. I found it impossible to enjoy it with those silly, large Xbox controllers.

Quake 2 I found interesting because the story was going on behind the scenes. It has a story, but no plot.

Sorry for the consistency, but I'm going for number 1:

Half Life 2 - brilliantly paced and great fun

and runner up:

Bioshock - great, thrilling adventure and an awesome and original plot. I'm just set for Bioshock Infinite now.
