Crysis is probably the number 1 contender, I tried it on a friend's pc and it was amazing.

I would like to say pop because I loved the style of the game and the graphics but was never able to play it on max.

Mirror's Edge looks beautiful, haven't tried it myself but the video effects looked just gorgeous

Crysis has to be the best graphics of realism, Prince of Persia in terms of new style!

Mirrors Edge was good too, just because of the fact that it is first person, makes it more exhilirating.

Farcry 2. no further discussion nessesary untill you have played it on ultra high. it was... beutifull. i found myself playing just for the view...
Is the difference really that big between the console and PC versions? Because from my perspective it was butt-ugly.
must be a huge differnce then, the sunset over the grassy plains, a few Zebra grazing silently... and the bad wound animations were great. it was about the most beutifull game i have ever seen. and fun too. would you like a screen shot?
It's a very good looking game, but not the best. If nothing else, the tree leaves are too big, and makes looking throught the forrest a bit unnerving. Yes, I have played it on the highest settings.

LBP was good, but MGS4 is as good graphically as that Final Fantasy movie.
That's just not true. The graphics of a game engine compared to a quality pre-rendered sequence is laughable.

Either Valkyria Chronicles or Braid. I much prefer stylish graphics to technical graphics.

Graphics != Art

I mean, ray tracing demonstrations aren't art.
I think my point would be more along the lines of, "the technical power behind graphics have come far enough that it's more of a matter of style now."

What style is best is about as discernible as what kind of art is best.
The technical power behind graphics haven't come far enough though.
Indeed. Have a look at this picture, rendered by 48 2.4GHz Xeons in 2004:

http://sourceforge.net/dbimage.php?id=36174

and note the rendering time. 5 days. For that one image.
That is not a good image because of the content and the specific rendering techniques used. Of course if you make an 11 million polygon screen with full ray tracing it's going to take that long. That's why we generally try and optimise rendering!

For example, this is some 3d done well:

Since I'm purely a console gamer, I'd have to say Gears of War 2 gets my vote. I don't think I've seen anything else on a console that can match the texture detail and overall look of that game.

Crysis: Warhead. No contest. MGS4 may look beautiful, but it's hardly anything compared to Crysis: Warhead. Crysis is the greatest looking game ever made, although personally, I think Killzone 2 looks nicer simply because of the atmosphere and the feel. Of course, Killzone 2 is coming out in February so it isn't exactly a 2008 game.

Far Cry 2 and Crysis Warhead. Both were different and in completely different settings so quite hard to compare.

I'm going to have to go with Fallout 3, as it seems we are also rating graphics by artistic merit as well as technical. The graphics in Fallout 3, I think, succeeded in evoking the feelings that they were supposed to, and the game also had the technixal prowess to pull it off for the most part.
Yeah, I think that although not as high rez as some of the games on this list (that just would not have been possible given the vast geography of the game), no other title has ever drawn me into its world like Fallout 3, and that is hugely due to the aching, despairingly beautiful art design.

Thank you. I'm glad someone said it. Dead space was beautiful, in a bloody/limb ripping kinda way. So for me it is Dead Space, with Gears 2 and Fallout 3 close behind.
The boss battles, oh the wonderful boss battles!

The pre-rendered bits of MGS4 were certainly on a par, and the game engine graphics are some of the best I've ever seen.

best graphics this year though? WipEout HD, hands down.

Warhammer Online for diversity in both zones and character creation and customization. And if you have the computer for it, the little details that contribute to the world are amazing too. (I love you random dead bodies all over the ground.)
