I hate the fact that in half of all FPS games the main character is mute, faceless and with nonexistent personality.
It doesn't enhance the immersion, it kills it.
And I hate when characters utter overused and cheap lines, like "It ends here!". Makes the game sound like a simple B movie.

Firstly, male protaganists are often images of physical perfection and combat fitness because that image makes the most sense given the context (if it's an epic mission to save mankind who would you send into the heart of an alien stronghold to kick extraterrestrial ass? the nice, if somewhat geeky, normal kind of guy...or Chuck Norris and Rosy O'Donald combined in genetically enhanced super human form?), I personally would find a protaganist laughable if it's more likely that I, just a regular human being, could probably kick their arse without much in the way of trouble (yes, I'm looking at both of you, Gordon and Alyx).

EDIT: I also find forced segements in shooters to be annoying (where they force you to either be stealthy, snipe, man a gun, pilot a tank/helicoptor/boat etc.with no alternative approaches).
Well, that depends on the game. It certainly makes sense for GoW that the front line soldiers would be well built, but should ALL of them be freakishly well built? At least one of the characters could be smaller, faster, smarter etc. and with out ending up being a huge puss... Baird doesn't count

He doesn't have to be nice, geeky or even somewhat normal. That's not that interesting. Doesn't even have to be a he. Just enough with the duke nukem wannabes!

I'm bored with the whole "Ug, you soldier, you have big arms, you make bad guy dead" scenario. I wanna play a civilian who's struggling to survive through out one of these alien invasions...

instead of taking on hundreds of them, you'd have to be smart to take down even one of them. Use whatever you could find etc...

or maybe play as a koopa instead of mario, struggling to provide for your family... enlisting in the koopa army to make ends meet. You promised billy a new shell, and you'll be damned if you're gonna let another christmas go down the tubes.

I just think there are more interesting ways to approach these kinds of games than making the main character essentially a big sack of muscles with an angry face and a gun who can withstand 40 some odd bullets before his eyes turn red and he has to sit down for a second.

Maybe we don't need any more space marine games!

I'm going to go with restricted weapons in roleplaying games, whether by level or class, if I can pick it up, I'm pretty sure my character wouldn't realistically go 'Wow, what an ace sword! Better not use it yet, this club is doing the job juuuuuust fine.'

I had never actually looked at it like that I just blindly accepted, 'that no, why would a wizard want to use a mace, phooey'

My eyes are now open

Another cliche, that makes me furious, is when in horror shooters your partner always says :"Hey, even though there are dozens of creatures creeping around and trying to rip our heads off, let's split up!" And if the game is a FPS, your character won't even try to protest, because he, most likely, will be mute!

Why are so many main protagonists mute?

That all FPS's are the same...drives me nuts...the same with all RPG's and JRPG's which really should just be one category
So you're saying an RPG, which is usually just a Role Playing Game, is the same as a JRPG, which is typically a game with a party based, turn based (most of the time)game with an anime style for art? I don't think so.
