I've played a lot of different RPGs so there's no way I can decide which on is the best, but the contestants are:

Kingdom Hearts 2
Mass Effect
Fable 2
Fallout 3

I can't decide. There are a few really good ones I've played:

- Final Fantasy IX
- SMT: DDS 1&2
- SMT: Persona 3

I'd also like to say that their supposed lack of legitimate challenge has kept me from trying those Bethesda games... Oblivion and Fallout 3. Can someone comment on what they did to make these games more difficult? I do, however, plan to play through the first Fallout.
Level scaling. The only problem is that they did it wrong because they are idiots who haven't played the game long enough.

But my first RPG and favorite of all time would have to be Legend of Dragoon. Long live multiple disc games! =D
I can't believe noone said this one! Legend of Dragoon is my absolute favorite game of all time too, I still play through it today.

I also like FFX and both Kingdom Hearts games.

...and Dragon Warrior back on the original Nintendo! The game would always freeze on me after playing for 2 straight hours and i'd have to start over but it was awesome!

I'm a sucker for classic, simple RPGS... but Oblivion and Fallout 3 are also amazing (own them both).

Do us all a favor and never write /thread again. It makes you look like an insufferable, arrogant asswipe.
Now do you really have to resort in name calling.
Keep up the insults and I can almost guarantee you a ban.

No need for hostility. Moments after, someone disagreed, did I call them an asswipe?

Baldur's gate games were pure brilliance.

I'm suprised so many people are saying fallout 3, it was a good game but i thought the over all plot was weak and the main quest was barely longer than other quests. Not to mention they constantly stopped the open worldness by blocking loads of paths and entrances. Whenever you go anywhere near buildings there are loads of invisible walls everywhere.

For me I would have to say KOTOR 1 although I have not played the second one. The game felt perfect, it gave you good control without bogging you down with too much, which is the problem I had with Baldur's Gate 2. I tried playing BG2 but just got frustrated because I felt like I just had to do too much all at once.

Diablo and to a lesser extent Diablo 2 are also high on my list (after KOTOR) for it's brilliance in simplicity as far as RPGs go. It gives you everything you need without over complicating things.

Honorable mentions goes to fable and disciples 2.

Does Pokemon count?
No, no it doesn't (slaps RAWKSTAR in face). As for me, I would go for Oblivion, since I don't yet have Fallout 3...

P.S. RAWKSTAR, I was just kidding about the faceslap thing :D
I wasn't *slaps him*

It certainly does.

One of the Fire Emblems, I'm going to go for Genealogy of Holy War (number 4) because it was bloody epic, and rock hard, and laden with twists and I loved it.

A close second would be Final Fantasy VI, followed by Chrono Trigger and Star Ocean, till the end of time
