Vampire bloodlines the Masquerade.

If you got into the npc's back stories and learn t a bit about whats going on its dark and gritty place to be.

Well, The Darkness was pretty dark in every sense of the word... Condemned 1 and Doom 3 are pretty solid examples too.

Oh, and never ever EVER play Doom 3 whilst high. I pretty near crapped my pants every 5 seconds :(

Doom 3. Couldn't see in front of my own face. Oh, you mean tone. I'd have to say Silent Hill 2.

If dark is to mean freaky and perhaps scary then i have to say i am avoiding the new Saw game as watching the game play on Youtube really got me freaked. I could only just tolerate the first two movies and have yet to see the rest when they come onto tv.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl is probably the darkest game I have ever played. And it also is the best game I have ever played. :)

The suffering 2: Ties that bind, was pretty dark. Especially when you guide a heroin addicted, emaciated, paranoid teenager through the horror infested streets to his "stash" and find his friend laying in the corner having committed suicide Kurt Cobain style.

As if that wasn't enough, said teenager go's immediately to his needle and asks aloud to his friend "Whatcha doing in the corner man?" before the room is stormed by new, drug addiction themed baddies who try and stick you with needles.

Yeesh, that game creeps me out.

L4D without the flash-light on. *cue groans*

OT: If by dark, you mean sorta evil and twisted, the Carlos incident in Saints Row 2 along with the funeral scene.
I reckon the carlos incident would have been alot better if it echoed through the game AT ALL. There was that one moment of sadness and then he was just kind of cast aside for the rest of the game. That was the one thing about SR2 that disappointed me.

In an extremely cliche fashion, I will have to agree with Yahtzee on this one.

The Sims is goddamn disturbing.

Dark as in, moody? Because the "Darkest" game anyone's ever played is Doom 3. Atmospheric, "Harvester" was pretty strange.
Ya, does he mean

Dark in atmosphere (ie. Portal) or Dark as in actual darkness? (ie. Doom)

I found "Beyond Good and Evil" pretty damn dark. In parts very light hearted but in other bits pretty horrible. I think it's because of the attachment that game managed with the characters.
