I can't tell you how many times I've screwed up the spelling for weird.

What the hell happened to "I before E except after C", people?! At least science has the proper sound to go with it!

Also, nippy, benz, and any of those words that they say in National Spelling Bees. There's no way anyone can ever use those normally in everyday life.

Spaghettification, it just sounds like something a child would come up with to describe how spaghetti is made rather than what happens to you inside a black hole

"meme". No one knows how it's pronounced, still, it's used over 9000 times every day (online).
That is actualy french inculturation into English I think.
I thought it was coined by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene. [Roots out copy]... Yep. Meme (with one of those ^ on tne 1st e that I don't know how to type) is French for memory, however 'meme' is a shortened form of Mimeme. Meme is pronounced similar to cream and gene. 'Meem'.

OT: The word " lieutenant" Why it's pronounced "Leftenant" I shall never know.
Leftenant? I always say "Lou-the-nent". And I always hear this pronounciation.

Also, this thread is about strange words. Not long words.

As for me - whether. You have no idea if it's the "weather" or "whether", because those two damn words SOUND EXACTLY THE SAME!

In England, and the British Armed forces the proper pronunciation is "Leftenant"

I thought Leftenant and lieutenant were different ranks.

I don't like the word gown, because it sounds really stupid.

If you stare at any word long enough, it looks funny, and sounds stupid. So I can't really say.

I'd post a medical term as people have taken to doing, but those are compounds of Latin or Greek rather than english.

I always thought "onomatopoeia" sounds like the name for a disease.
To be fair, it barely changed from its original Greek form.
On the other hand, every word in English stems from another language, so...
Well some of them we made up.

Oh there are so many medical words which are applicable here...

Hirutism - development of male characteristics in females due to hormonal imbalances
Fondaparinux - (an anticoagulant)
Hemidesmosome - (holds cells together)
Agammaglobulinema - (absense of antibodies, usually an x-linked disorder)
Molluscum Contagiosum - pox virus infecting children causes this disease
Leishmania - Parasitic infection found in tropical areas
Pemphigus Vulgaris - Autoimmune disease featuring massive blistering of the skin.

I'll stop now...
