someone stole the disk and sold it probably for about £5 (this guy was is thick) right when the game became rare + expensive
didnt lose the save, but lost about 30 hours of game, as i only recently managed to buy another disk, in the non-original box and no manual for £20!
and zelda: link to the past on the SNES. my mum tripped over the power cord, and dispite probably being in pain, me, my brother and my step dad proceeded to shout at her

Oooh, I remember. I was playing Pokemon pearl, and after a good six hours or so of finishing the game, and training Pokemon, my little sister comes to watch. Everything's find, power's up at max, and for this reason, I hadn't saved.

The my sister clicks the game out of the DS.

I feel your pain back when i first got emerald i spent a few hours and got to the 3rd gym when right after i beat the leader- my sis presses the power button( i forgot about the miricale of saving)
Gah. It's as though all sisters all hate Pokemon.

But, I guess we learn from our mistakes, eh?
yep now i save every three seconds and dont play handhelds alot cuz most only have saving checkpoints which is very, very annoying
fire emblem for the GBA
an Turn based game that auto saves on EVERY turn, so if you lose power or something, you are at EXACTLY the same place when you turn back on!

Same here. When playing Dragon age, I quicksave before and after every battle. Even on easy mode. That experience taught me well.

Probably Oblivion, don't know how many hours exactly but I played almost every day for hours since I got it last December so you get the idea.

Morrowind - 300+ hours on one character.

I don't, however, class that as time "lost" as I do "well spent"
Yeah, lost was a poor choice of words on my part...

There's tons of examples of this from Warcraft 3 multiplayer games, but Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy gets the prize for glitching so badly I lost control and destroyed a memory card, ruining several weeks worth of gaming at the very least.

Of course World of Warcraft seconded by Fallout 3. I am surprised so many people said stuff from the Elder Scrolls series. I hate them all.

To all the people talking about how long they played their games, only to *GASP!* not lose their saves or have their accounts wiped for no reason:
[HEADING=1]THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS THREAD IS ABOUT.[/HEADING]
It's not about how much playtime you sank into WoW or anything, but how long you spent playing only to have your save corrupted or forget to save.

So here's my contribution:
Oblivion. I finish the main quest, do Knights of the Nine, and am nearing the end of Shivering Isles when something terrible happens.
Lightning bolt during saving.
The next day, when I try to load my save, praying that it's not corrupted, it is. I stare at the tv for several minutes, then rise to my feet quietly, before going on every single one of my online games and griefing the fuck out of everyone for a week.
One of my favourites has to be from Garry's Mod griefing, where I acted like an absolute minge, including ERROR sign playermodel, while playing the weirdest Exosounds I had collected in my time.
Billy Mays here with another fantastic product.
FUCKERS.
*Machine gun sounds.*
Yeah, I was gonna correct that and say this isn't what the thread is about, but hell. I love hearing people's stories about playtimes period, whether they lost them or not. So all I gotta say is, KEEP UM COMING!!!!!

Ahhhhhhhh Fire Emblem, I would rage quit those games so often with the originals because a character would eat some dude's axe who had a 16% chance to hit, that game pushed me to the only time I almost ever destroyed a console (gameboy but you know what I mean) because of a game.

The Godfather game, played all night, forgot to save, and turned off the game. 2 minutes later, I realized what happened. I also lost 5 hours on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. when it screwed up and wouldn't let me save, only letting me use auto-save, meaning I would have to go back to the start of the map and move to a different part of the game. I learned that after playing for 5 hours, then saving, turning off the game. Then I went on later, and it wouldn't let me load. 5 hours.

I put about 20 total hours of my life into an NHL 2005 season only to have my memory card corrupted around the trade deadline, not long before the playoffs. It was just that save file that got corrupted; every other game was fine.

Batteries dying on me while playing any one of the many Pokemon games, I really only save that game before a legendary Pokemon encounter or a gym leader, or when i'm about to turn of the game.

Also Demon's Souls, and anyone who has played it knows why...

Recently I was 22 hours into Demon's Souls and I decided that I hated how my character looked, so I started over. I just couldn't handle it, stupid brain.

I lost about 8-10 hours on Ultima IV once when I was quiet young, due to neglecting to save.

Now, hitting the quicksave key is as regular as blinking or breathing. I seldom lose more than a minute or two at worst.

Four or five hours once in Far Cry 2. If I remember correctly, that game doesn't support autosaves, so I was in to the game so much that I didn't think of saving. Until finally, I get killed. And then I realise I didn't save.

Same goes for Fallout 3, on the PS3. As you may know, that game tends to freeze on the Playstation 3 frequently. I was three hours further in the game, after my last save and for some reason he didn't autosave. Suddenly, the PS3 freezes.

Honestly, you feel like crap when that happens. All those hours wasted.

Oh yes, and once on my Playstation (One) one of my memory cards got swiped clean. There were completed saves on there of Final Fantasy VII, VIII and Metal Gear Solid among others.

A part of me died that day ... Nah, just kidding. I did feel extremely horrible and demotivated, though. Especially because I was only eleven or twelve at the time being. Just try to grasp how many hours I pumped into both Final Fantasy games alone.

i love mass effect 2 cuz autosave seems to happen every half-second, unless its corrupted, but i digress.
i was playing crash bandicoot warped. (like fifth time playing it) killed cortex, and thats when my PS just did like some sort of backflip and just stopped. turned off the console, gave it an hour, turned it back on, check when i had saved, apparently just after finishing the first level in the second room (with dingo dile) rage is the word. rage indeed.

100+ hours to Pokemon Sapphire. I had all of the gyms beat and was about to go to the Elite Four. I was in victory road (or whichever one takes its place in Sapphire), had to save and quit, and when I cam back, I was inside of one of those "strength-push" boulders and couldn't move.
