i've never liked to associated an rpg with the country it comes from so to me a 'western rpg' and a 'J-rpg' are the same as they are both role-playing games

now on to games
Tales of legendia, Tales of vesperia,(really any game starting with 'Tales Of'). .hack// infection, mutation, outbreak, quarantine, kingdom hearts, Golden sun/ the lost age, radiata stories and final fantasy games

If there is ONE final fantasy you must play it should be THIS one. It's not the greatest game ever by any means but as far a JRPG's go it's a rather brilliant piece of work. I hold in as high regards as Chrono Trigger, it's THAT good. Good story, gameplay, visuals, and music wrapped up perfectly making it a rather complete package. Hell I'll be bold enough to say that it's story still stands up today as one of the best game stories made, hell better than some stuff today.

On a side note, I have not played FFVI yet. It's on my to-do list. I'm sure a friend can supply me with a rom, however the said friend is harassing me to use their 'fixed translation' rom of Breath of Fire 2 and replay that game first. Everyone tells me that FFVI is the ultimate cure for cancer, yet I can never get around to it. Is this a game that I should put on top priority, a game where - if I don't play it - a kitten shall die every hour of negligence? Or can I continue holding off on it?
If only to insure against possible hype backlash, I'll say you can hold off on it. "Eventually" is a perfectly acceptable timeframe.

Ahhh, I knew I was going to get called out on that one. Yes, I know there are females in the story. But in actuality how many do you fight with? How many of these women are in your party and actively battling with you? Compare that to how many male characters you fight with. The only playable woman in the entire game is Mulan. I'm not saying that women didn't have some part in the story, but you never get to know them and, exception to one, you never get to fight with them.

This is true, as to how many fight by your side? Tifa and Yuffie both have sequences in which they activly fight by your side, though not as part of the Party. But keep in mind this is less a flaw with the game as it would be with the whole damn Concept. How many female disney leads ARE Warriors? Mulan is and who else? this is an honest question here because the majority of them are not fighters and would be dumb along side fighters. So thats inherently going to happen JUST from the premise of the game

How could you deny that anyone wearing black or titled a 'nobody' and given a robe were not immediately shot dead and that the entire plot, outside of amnesia, revolved around how no one wanted them around? How the main black-clothed 'nobodies' try to give themselves a reason to live, try to find a reason to strive in this world, and your main purpose is to snuff them out? This is even something you accomplish. Mickey Mouse sneaked into their clique and you thought that he suddenly became evil simply through wearing a black robe and hanging out with the unwanted crowd.

Because Black represents enigma, hell I think your really stretcing it. They were the antagonists! if all of them had been wearing white would you have considered them the Ku Klux Klan?! this is taking a design choice of using black to represent Enigma when all of them (except Xemnas) are WHITE! Keep in mind it wasn't Soras goal to snuff out the organization, they fucked with him. Lord knows why they didn't let him do what he was doing (Kill heartless) remember the first time he saw a Nobody was AFTER he first saw Mickey in the robe, and he didn't think Mickey was evil just apart of the Mysterious Organization. Keep in mind right after that he saw the Organization being gigantic PRICKS to everyone!

I'm sorry I didn't know holding a hostage and trying to kill people were so high on the organizations list of things to prove i'm human. Then consider what Nobodies are. The remnants of beings that have become heartless, Namine was a Nobody and she wore white, Roxas was a Nobody, the original 6 Nobody all betrayed their teacher because they investigated in stealing hearts. They aren't misunderstood they are fucking evil.

The plot revolved around finding Riku and the King as it allways had, it was about combating the heartless and then these chuckle fucks pop in and A. try to kill you and B. kidnap your friends!

And don't worry, I'm not including any other KH games. I'm not one of those people that hate an entire series due to one game. This is completely singling out KH2. I liked KH1, and believe it had more character and thought put into it than 2. In fact, I liked the Hundred Acre Woods thing in the first game. It was pleasant. Haven't played the others yet and hold nothing against them.

well congratulations the DS game will have you in control of the organization and the GBA game was the first showing of the organization and their goal THEN was steal Sora's memories then use him against the other half of the organization. The organization was pretty damn black and white when it came to being evil unless your name was Axel who was just a coniving mother fucker who got bowlderdized in KH2
So in short your making a HUGE mountain out of tiny Mole Hills and I think your one of those people who never actually read the Ansem Reports that pretty much show that "Yeah their evil"

MY complaint with KH 2 is why the organization bothered getting involved at all?! I mean this is their goal right

"Kill heartless to restore Kingdom Hearts so we can get hearts" At least on PAPER thats what it was. I get that they don't have hearts or even emotions (they really are Human Shaped Heartless it's just what happened to the body and mind when the heart was taken) but JESUS CHRIST Logic dictates that if you have the same goal as Sora you shouldn't kidnap his friends and try to kill them. It was the STUPIDEST idea ever "hey we want to kill all heartless so lets go antagonize the good guy whos doing just that!" hell they even pretty much realized this when Saix went to Sora "Just keep doing what your doing"

So stupid yes, Supremist or Racist? no. And the Sexisim is inherant from it being from Disney (by the way I am still curious for disney heroines who happen to also be warriors)

I'll admit that I was thinking about actually getting Kingdom Hearts, that is UNTIL I learned that you had to play the game with ALL the major Disney characters. I backed up literally when I learned that whinny the Pooh and Donald Duck were main characters. Not interested.
Actually Winnie has allways been the optional Minnie Game world and Donald Duck is surprisingly Badass (Mickie Mouse is the KING badass)

Not to mention that the worlds you play through are mostly comprised of the ones Boys would like, such as Agrabah, Nightmare Before Christmas, Peter Pan if were talking about the first game Tarzan, we get Beast in Hollow bastion, Hercules, yes we do have the retarded oh god I hate this world every now and then (Fuck Atlantis, I know it's optional but FUCK ATLANTIS! Especially in the second game where it's a SINGING MINI GAME!) but you can actually get through the entire game without needing to do any of the crap worlds (Alice in Wonderland isn't so much crap as it is crazy and it's one of the first worlds)
I actually would be able to tolerate an Alice in Wonderland world, all the I'd have to do is imagine that the world is American McGee's Alice, for PC. Play that game if you don't mind having nightmares.

Terranigma.
Really. This game. Seriously man. I cried so hard at the ending.
Easily my favorite game on the SNES, and for an RPG from that generation, it's pretty unique.
Set in the real world, with real historical figures appearing as characters, no party members, action based combat.
Download this game for an emulator since it never came out in NA. If you live in Europe or Japan, track it down, fucking worth it.

Also, Radiata Stories, any Tales of(If you can't stand whiny heroes, avoid Abyss. Luke never shuts up. Ever.), Golden Sun, Secret of Evermore, The World ends with You, Any PS2 Shin Megami Tensei game.

Pokemon.

Partly for the nostalgia, but mainly because it is just plain fun.

Gotta catch 'em all.

Personally, I loved FF8

People complained about the junction system, but I thought it was refreshing to be able to tweak and customize your characters as you see fit. It allowed any character to fill any role.

The characters were engaging, if a little whiney at times (but as if that's new in a JRPG). The story was interesting and full of enough twists and turns to be an F1 race track.

The boss battles were suitably epic, the GFs were the same though sometimes repetitive if you're going to sit through Eden or Pandemonia for upteenth time.

The card trading mini-game was a nice addition, being a nice little time waster and reaping you long term benefits.

All in all a very good game which suffers from being the sequel to 7 (which personally I thought was inferiour).

If you own a DS get Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier. Long title but a great story and addictingly fun. It does things a little differently combat wise than most JRPGs.

And what about these games? Do you like them, dislike them. Why? This is a discussion thread, not a list.
Nice multi-quote.

Arc the Lad because of the story and game play. All the JRPG's I played before AtL (ha) were turn based and "you-stand-here-you-stand-here-and-see-who-dies-first" game play. With Arc the Lad, it was all still turn based, but it added another level of strategy with being able to move in and out of range of your opponent(s) and having ranged attacks.

Infinite Undiscovery... Well, actually, I'm not too sure why I liked this one. It ended up in my GameQ by accident. It was a pretty good story from what I played of it. It's still pretty much a cliche in the genre, but it was an entertaining one. It's definitely a game that's going to go under a lot of people's radars.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go kill things in Bionic Commando.

I generally detest JRPGs, but 'The World Ends With You' was criminally addictive and extremely contemporary.

Persona series. Play it. love it.

It actually manages to make all those usually boring talky bits between the fighting genuinely fun and engaging.
