afternoon is a good spot in my opinion. a glass of wine or two along the day isnt the big deal. it has been proven that a whisky shot (i think it was whisky or bacardi) a day is good for your blood veins. should clear em out i think.

So... what time do you think it is acceptable to start drinking at?

I ask this because it is currently 2:46 Pm (here in the UK)
and I've had a few drinks to celebrate my end of exams, and feel like getting people's opinions on this.

Do you need a specific reason to drink? whether it be socialising, or celebration, or whatever the reason.

personally, i believe drinking in the morning is a bit wierd unless there is a reason.
Judging by your birthdate on your profile I assume these are end of year exams for university, in which case I am extremely jealous since my own uni exams aren't for another three weeks. On topic, however, I personally reckon that drinking in the morning is silly unless you're an alcoholic. Which is also silly. However, when we go out my flatmates and I usually start drinking early evening (around 7pm onwards), although I have drunk earlier than that. If you're at lunch or some sort of celebration or event, (for example, whenever my rugby friends come round to watch the game) then I suppose afternoon drinking is alright too.

That said, I occasionally start drinking at around 3pm for a night out (yeah, hardcore I know). That's only for the Otley Run though, so I suppose I can be excused for that (for anyone not in Leeds, which is most of you, the Otley Run is pretty much the toughest pub crawl in the entire UK. Right up the main street, the Otley Road, it features about 25 pubs and bars and you have to drink in every single one. People start early afternoon and don't finish till after midnight...).

When you are 18, as soon as you wake up. But only for that year. If you continue on after that, you are a drunkard.

/rural Australia raised logic.

Basically in my last year of school my entire year, standing on the social ladder notwithstanding was drunk day in, day out.

This is kind of gross, but expected of 18 year olds. Ahh, all the destroyed brain cells.
Gee, no wonder nobody really liked me apart from the nerdy kids in high school, I wasn't drinking NEARLY enough! But I can't drink too much because it would mix with my meds and, as we say in visual novel terminology... BAD END.

Well unless there is occasion, I usually don't start until a bit later, round 5 (just out of habit I guess). But I have no problem with starting at... say when I wake up.

What I don't understand is those people for who it is not ok to drink in the morning, but you can stay up all night get back to 7am and still drink and there is nothing wrong with that. Seriously what is wrong with drinking all night, all the next day? :p

2 before 10 and,
10 before 2

...but seriously, I think if you aren't adult enough to know when you can have a drink without having to rely on an arbitary hour you plucked from somewhere or another, you might consider if drinking is the right thing for you. I think it's more important to consider how, why and what consequences there are from you drinking as opposed to just when you are drinking.

There are no conventions that need to be followed - it's drinking time all the time. If you're in a party mood, that is. You shouldn't allow your alcohol consumption be limited by standard conventions. It's somewhat unacceptable to be drunk during the day, but there are naturally special circumstances that sometimes allows this.

Edit: Oh, in general it's accepted to start drinking early in the morning, especially on Sundays, but only if you've kept it going throughout the night, i.e. haven't stopped yet.

Depends on what your drinking, and how much. Generally, from mid-day its sociologically acceptable.

When it starts getting dark outside is about the time to start drinking alcoholic beverages.

Personally, I have ditched school and started drinking as soon as the shops would sell it. If you have just finished your exams, fucking go for it, you only live once man, if you have no responsibilities GET FUCKED UP!

These days though, unless I am at a festival or on holidays or something, I don't get to drink until the evening, its pretty shit. Since I used to drinking with my boys every sat at about 1 o clock, then we had to get jobs, booooo.

Yes I am Irish, and I very much like drink.

Any time after noon is fine with me.

Morning? Only after an event such as exams. Just don't drink if you got one the same afternoon.

Well I used to recon drinking in the morning was kinda wrong but then I moved to warmer more humid climes, and I have to say, any times fine if its over 35 degrees centigrade in the shade.

As long as your not taking care of children, handling firearms or planning to drive, you can start whenever you feel like it.

After exams, and especially at the end of high school, for one week it is acceptable to drink at any point of the day and for any length of time.
I approve of your dog, and your alcohol timing.

As a university student, it seems that any time is acceptable to drink. My 'never before 9pm' rule has slowly been pushed back over the course of the last year to 8:30, then 8, and is down to 7:30 at the moment.

I asked around and the base rule seems to be you are only a alcoholic if you have to have 17+ drinks a day. Anything less than 17 and you are fine.
That is complete bull. You can be an alcoholic at around 5 drinks per day. It is recommended by doctors that you don't go over 2 drinks a day.

OT: As someone who is dead set against alcohol, I would say never. However, if you need to drink, here is what I would go by:

Beer: Any time after 12:00PM
Stronger than Beer: After 6:00PM
