Oh, hey, I just remembered one of my great favorites:

Modem Wars [http://www.mobygames.com/game/c64/modem-wars].

If that wasn't my first (non-text-based, non-BBS) online game, I'm not sure what would be.

I played Puzzle Pirates for a few months back in '05, but the amount of work I had to put in being captain of a crew (The Hanseatic League) felt too much like a second full-time job. My wife wanted something we could play together, but she likes multiplayer and I most decidedly do not.

Dragon's Gate, a text based MMORPG offered WAY back on AOL. Ironically enough, also the first time I've had moderators called on me :D

My first online was MechAssault.

I don't remember much of my first ever match, but I do remember that when the mech "Hellbringer" first came out everyone hated me cause I just owned them with the mech.

As far as I can remember, it was Diablo 2 when I was, oh 6/7, playing with my older brother. Great game, but we had dial-up, died so much. And, we spent way too much time playing that in the summer, we had a 99 of every class. Rushing was fun :).

I feel so old, I used to play Red Alert 1 and heroes of might and magic 2 online, badly.
It wasn't until flash games started to flourish (with the rise of macromedia) that online gaming picked up for me.
Just little stuff like cockle fighting and battle things from games domain.

My very first internet experience was using yahoo search to find sound clips from the new ace Ventura movie :D (Pet detective, not call of nature)

I can't remember the first game I played online, but the first one I owned myself and played using my own internet connection was Halo: CE on the old PC.

Same here (console game). Although my first MMO was runescape (shut up, I actually thought it was good).

Team Fortress 2. Still my favorite thing to play online.
TF2 is a great online shooter, mostly because it doesn't play like most other shooters that have guns that kill in .3 seconds its less about who spots who first, and more about who has the best tactics and teamwork (and ubers)

and for my first mp game: Warcraft 3
