ANYTHING made by Shaft
Actually id stay away from SHAFT.

Most of their shows are horribly pretentious and falsely advertised.
But that's just my opinion.

Most of the Anime by Production I.G. or MADHouse are better imo.
Studio Bones always seems to make a great series, Fullmetal Alchemist Star Driver, Soul Eater. (I just realized all their shows are basically "Noun-Verber" )
Right now I'm on a quest to watch everything that Gainax has ever made. but I think I'll avoid the product tie-in they made with subaru.
CONGRATULATIONS!~ ending of neon Genesis Evangelion (then my head exploded)
Bones is a pretty constant studio.
I loved the Movie Sword of the Stranger they did recently.

And yea, iv heard that the Magical Subaru girl show is extremely generic shit.

Another studio id recommend is Tatsunoko Productions.
Tekkaman Blade, Karas, Casshern, Gatchaman.

They have a legacy of Genre defining anime.
And now they are doing Gosick
(i think it's the third time here i mention this anime, but is because i love it.)

Why my good sir, you appeared to have had your post eaten. You should edit it to have some type of comment.

Ah yes Gosick.
its apparently what Milky Holmes could have been, only not as colorful and the MC is a Japanese transfer student.
To echo a friend for a sec, gee how original.

Ill get to it eventually.

If you want somewhere to watch Anime, try Crunchyroll.com. Lots of different series and its genrally free with a premium payed service for higher quality videos and the most recent episodes. Best of all its a legit site. No piracy here.

Not sure what you're getting at. I did link a website...

I am now confused. ANYWAY, back to watching Soul Eater.

Let's see.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: You've heard this from others, but I'll recommend it anyway.
Clannad (After Story): Only anime to get a real emotional reaction out of me.
Code Geass (R2): Action, strategy, deceit. It's got something for everyone.
K-On!: Light hearted comedy and interesting characters. (It's being dubbed right now.)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Again, others have said this, but for a good reason.
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun: I would recommend Toaru Majutsu no Index, but you said no currently running serie, so this is the spin-off. It's about a world where people go to school to become espers. (If you wait a month this season of Index will finish.)

Well lots of people are putting out personal favourites and you could get an endless list of that, but for the biggest 'major series' you missed the top 3 unanimous choices would probably be Death Note, The Melachonly of Haruhimi Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Runner up would be either Clannad: After Story or Code Geass, depending on your preference (I tried Clannad but it retained too much of a 'dating sim' vibe for me).
There are two Melancholy series?

I've only ever heard of Haruhi.
Oops how did that happen, let me go edit it. Though they did release a second season fairly recently... great to see but obviously disappointing for a very obvious reason.
More like eight obvious reasons...
Were it not for those eight obvious reasons there would be no movie. Yes, that is how it worked.

I agree with most of the above, but I would add Claymore, Higurashi, and Baccano to their lists.
I tried Claymore, but didn't like it at all.

Incredible.

Did you get past episode one and still not like it? Wow.

...I guess some people really do have vastly different tastes.

Err... I'm at a loss here then, as I judge pretty much everything relative to Claymore, and if you didn't like that I have not idea what you would like.

Argh, that's right, I really need to get around to see that movie.

Still. The endless eight really ought to have been handled better. I watched it all too.

The lack of Tekkaman Blade is dissapointing. Seriously watch it.
I literally fanboy about it in every topic I get the chance to do so. So yeah. It's good. And short. Like 39 episodes. 39 episodes of just great story and action. No filler.

Melancholy of Harui Suzumiya
Trigun
Naruto (and Shippuden)
Death Note
Lucky Star

Sadly, Detroit Metal City hasn't really caught on. Luckily, the Fist of the North Star reboot isn't that big either. I'm waiting for Devil-Man to come back out of obscurity. Desert Punk is pretty big too I think...or...was... Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan is obscure you a must see if you can find it.

Seen it five times, myself, just to say I did. Not sure if that is a good thing.

They should have gone from 1 to say, 2, 56, to 893, to 1100, etc. to 15,498 as the last and had really different circumstances such as the dance being rained out or my avatar actually telling everyone something was wrong beforehand at least once.
Oh, well. The movie makes up for it scores over.

In the US?

Naruto, Bleach, Death note, On peice, DBZ kai, etc, but only becuase they were the only ones airing here.

I'm sure if it included shows that were watched online, the list would be diffrernt, probably with Gurren Lagann.

Gurren Lagann, Haruhi, K-On, Angel Beats, High School of The Dead, Strike Witches, Spice and Wolf (maybe not so major?), Code Geass, Black Lagoon, Genshiken.
