Let me set up this theory: what if the mayans were able to foresee his death and it's what is the truth behind 2012?
There is a mayan god called Chaac [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaac] (you notice the similarity Chaak - Chuck?), who strikes the clouds and thereby produces rain. Also:

Versions of this myth show the rain deity Chac in his war-like fury, pursuing the fleeing Sun and Moon, and attacking them with his lightnings.
