For those who have been following "the assumed readers of this here post" Metal Gear Solid 4 has become one of the most highly anticipated games for the ps3. In the wake of all this hype, expectation, fanboy freek outs a waaaaaaaaaaave of debate and controversy has begun to sprout out in the form of....

-) Konami asking reviews who have early copies to ommit specific information conserning the game.

-) Reviews ranging from 10 and 9.9 (expectation) to lows such as 8/10.

-) God damned and hated ps3 vs xbox360 wars

-) comparrisons to the suscess of Grand Theft Auto 4

Who knows what? Who thinks what?

To your points (which are very valid) in order.

1. I hate them for that shit.
2. Same thing happened to Halo 3
3. ditto
4. ditto

1. All devs. do it, Konami, Eidos, and Rockstar just got caught.

2. Don't trust big release reviews (see #1), this happens with pretty much every big release, like Halo and GTA and...well, you get the idea.

3. This is normal and happens with every exclusive release ever and will never end, think of it like Palestine and Israel.

4. Apparently everyone thinks that every company that releases a game is trying to compete with GTA IV and bring it up for whatever reasons, even though the game is NOTHING like GTA IV.

did'nt see that comparison coming :D
Personally I think its rediculous, the ps3 is a machine, the xbox is a machine. Different companies and different software. When you break it down to that what can you really debate?

-) As far as the things their doing with withheld info on reviews, I'm actually supportive of it. Considering they went to all the trouble of making a world wide release, probobly to keep all supposed secrets and spoilers to a minimum "which in its own right sounds very cool" I'd expect them to go out of their way to see that anything else that could be spoiled in a review is kept under-wraps. It's not going to win them any brownie points from critics, but seeingas how they agreed to said terms when they were given the games to play, I'd hope the contracts would be respected. "probobly should have had this in the intro........whateva"

Yeah that's what I thought was going on when they said they would "censor" reviews - because unlike the Kane and Lynch scenario, these reviews were just released to the public and said "Konami doesn't want us to spoil these parts so we've got to really keep it under wraps" and since the list was so long on "things that shouldn't be spoiled" - it's bound to happen that someone would forget an item on that list, but now that K&L was a hot topic - journalism's misleading headlines strike again - causing uproars everywhere.

Console wars are indeed a part of gaming.
Sega vs. Nintendo, Sony vs. Nintendo, Sony vs. Microsoft.

I don't care whatsoever. I have a 360 and for MGS4 I simply wish I had a PS3 or they'll make a 360 version for MGS4 "Substance3 (or however it's gonna be called.

As for the review thing. I don't read the reviews before I've played the game anyway, so who cares?

Well I read Gamestm because it actually gives accurate reviews. I't put me onto a lot of great games like Beyond Good and Evil and Okami and it doesn't just give a 7 for a bad game it'll give a 4 so I whole heartedly trust it.

The review is the text, not the score.

Of the reviews I've read, (IGNs and Eurogamer's), both had a score fit to the text of the review. (Eurogamer gave one of the 8s, on the basis that if you are not a slavering fan of Metal Gear Solid already, some parts of this game will be lost on you)

Where's the sense in that?
Prevents you going into a game with a preconception.

Reviewers gave Halo 3 perfect scores but I got bored with it after once through the campaign (so about 6 1/2 hours), whilst Twilight princess (on the Gamecube) got mixed reviews but kept me occupied for months.

Although it would be mildly hilarious to watch snake jack a car run over 18 pedestrians, go to a strip club, watch some tv and then when to cops show up he whips on his stealth suit and hes outta there in the shadows.

Wasn't there a gag about that in the mgs3 trailer?

Snake points his gun at a guy on a motorbike and yells FREEZE hold up style.

The guy on the bike looks at him and says something like "give it a rest, this is a jungle, not Grand Theft Auto" then rides off.

If snake really wanted that bike... that poor son a ***** would never have seen him coming.

Yep that's it. And even if they're supposed to be spoiler-free I'm always afraid that there could be something that ruins the experience a bit for me.
It's only with story-driven games like MGS4 that I have such paranoia. Reviews can of course be very good. I'm mean the page we're on at the moment proves that there's good gaming journalism...

As for the 360 version: I know the chances are slim, almost non-existent, but one can hope, right? Until then, I'll try to rent a PS3 somewhere.

Surprised nobody has mentioned that one reviewer giving a game a 10 and another giving the same game an 8 isn't anywhere near drastic, they're both really good scores.

I think what happened right now is that they are using the hype to boost the opening day sales. It seems to be a pattern, because Halo 3 wasn't really that amazing, same old gameplay, some new weapons, and better graphics... but it wasn't really deserving of its "epic" tag.

MGS is a great series, but there hasn't been something that you can call: "major overhaul" with the game system. Graphics are nice and all, but once you peel that off, it's the gameplay that actually sucks you in.

So I'm actually going to hold my praise/flame for the day it comes out.
