What's happened to music? Some very bad things, my friend.

I call them Rap, Hip-hop, and Pop. The first three Horsemen of the Musical Apocalypse have arrived. What is the fourth?

It seems that you are very narrow minded, don't take the moment to go out and check out other kinds of music and just all out.. wow. I mean, I can't believe anyone could make a statement like that in any kind of era.

But you do realize that I'm throwing my opinion out on the public and the mainstream music we have today, right? So while I could go on about what I think, I want to see what others think, so I'm not sure on how narrow-minded that is. Obviously I'm talking about something that hits the nerve in people, so we will have varying opinions. And I have listened to all kinds of music, that is where my opinion derives from. It's not like I'm spitting venom just to piss people off

Dude thats what people said in the 50's 60's 70's up to now. Each generation has new music which some people find better or worse. People burned Elvis records because they said it was sinful but it was just a reflection of the new societies value, as is today. Yes there is alot of shithouse music around today (see the entire pop genre) and metal isn't really a patch on the likes of metallica and sabbath anymore. But really there are still some fantastic bands out that will go down as Gen Y's rock legends. Just look at bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, the Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Rise Against, Atreyu from time to time, Jack Johnson, the Killers, Weezer and a plethora more that I can't name for fear of ranting (as if I haven't already done so).
Also look back on the 70's and 80's eras. While there was some FANTASTIC music then it too was buried neck deep in commercial pop shit. For example, Maddonna.

Damn, that's so true, every single bit of it except I didn't know about the whole Elvis thing haha!

Mainstream music is almost always total shit (with a few exceptions), but there are tons of awesome smaller bands, and even some good big ones. But then there's shit like lady gaga, and other pop stars. Good music is still very much alive, it just takes a little looking.

There is plenty of good metal coming out these days, you just have to sift though a lot of shit to get to it.

This is one of those times I get to sit back, relax and laugh at mainstream music because I listen to nothing but classical music. Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Schubert, Haydn, everything else pales in comparison to the works of those amazing, amazing people. I own a 30gb ipod and it is full with nothing but classical, and I think that's fantastic!

So I sympathise, I also believe modern music is shallow and pale by comparison. I understand why people like it and can also understand that what (some) artists do is actually pretty good. But compared to classical? It doesn't stand a chance.

I don't know if I'm the only person to think this (sure looks like I am though), but today's music mostly sucks. I mean, every rock band has a singer who sounds like he got kicked in the throat, electronic music is getting embarrassing, and I really don't need to comment on pop music haha! Also, everyone now sings about their depression, drugs, or women as toys (most of which I doubt even happened). I personally would love a Beatles-esque band to come up, but it seems like that era is gone... Am I crazy or does someone think so too???
Dude, look for independant bands, listen to your local music scene, myspace is rubbish socially but awesome for bands. If you like clever lyrics and catchy riffs then listen to the Brittish indie rock scene, if you want some reccomendations PM me and I'll let you know. As for electro have you heard of Pendulum? basically just keep more of an eye out :)

Throughout music history music has been made up of about 95% crap and 5% good stuff. That hasn't changed in the modern era it's just the the 95% is being pushed harder because it's profitable.

What the hell are you talking about? Have you never heard of independent music? Stop listening to the top 40 shit that the RIAA is cramming down your throat and discover the world of good music.
Really, once everyone read this, they should have nodded their head and closed the page.

Death metal and Power metal are alive and well. In addition thrash is still floating about, as long as there is decent metal still being made it's fine with me. Don't me wrong though, the majority of music being released today is painfully terrible.

I didn't know there were people actually named schlomo.
There is and that particular one is an amazing violinist. I've never heard anyone play Mendelssohn's violin concerto better.

I can't honestly say that there's ever been a time when classical music made my day, but that's got me in the mood to listen to Habanera de Carmen really badly now =)

I made sure I posted something with a good opening in case anyone listened to it, but thankyou, it's not often you get thanked for liking classical! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
