Nothing I think it is an awful idea to make a movie out a MMORPG especially one like WoW. I know there is a slight story in it but there is really not enough there to make a decent story unless they are going to take a lot of elements from Warcraft. Overall I think this is a horrible idea. So to make it anyway decent they will need to follow Warcraft.
I'm pretty certain you could pull a story out of it. There's a villain somewhere, we want to kill him. It's pretty basic, which would probably give the writers a lot of room to add their own angle on things, rather than the story already established in the RTS games.
Well if you want to go with the WoW "story" it is basically going to turn into a bad rip off of the LoTR. Also nearly all game movies are bad so I don't see why this will be any different as with this they will have to work in the games skill and equipment into the movie otherwise it wouldn't really be a WoW movie now would it?

Why WoW? Why not a movie about one of the RTSs? Those have an actual story to make into a movie, and quite a decent one too.
original world of warcraft:
orcs: their background is how there are still orcs left that are faithful to demon masters (the entire burning blade chain)
night elves: their background is how their new world tree causes unwanted mutations in local wildlife (well into darkshore)
humans: since these are not the lordaeron ones, their main story is about the defias brotherhood, a group that starts out as bandits, but are soon to be found much more powerful, with connections into the highest ranks of stormwind
undead: a constant war with the scarlet crusade, a group of lordaeron humans who follow a being they think is the Light (not going to spoil too much in here). they're working on a new plague that will kill both living and undead.
dwarfs/gnomes: they have to fight of incursions of troggs, and their quests are about discovering who they are and were they come from

burning crusade:
draenei: okay, you got me there
blood elves: defeating the remaining scourge to reclaim what was once theirs.

wotlk:
haven't played yet

this is a very short synopsis of only the starting areas.
slight story to it huh?
That is the problem with the story. There is no main story there are just a lot of little story and I don't think a movie of this type in a fantasy setting would lend itself to well to a Sin City styled story. So yes all the races have their little stories but there is no real main one as the other little ones would have to be worked in otherwise fans might be peeved.

We need Ron Perlman as Grom Hellscream.

Seriously, they look exactly the same!
Now that I think about it.You're right.

OT:Well seeing how this isn't really a WoW movie. It happens 2 or 3 years prior to WoW.I think it might be actually good.Or at least a good movie to shut your brain off to and look at all the pretty colours.

Yes, but I would put the emphasis on slight. I've played WoW for a while, and I know there's some underlying plot, but it's quickly, very quickly burried underneath tons of completely unrelated quests and there's never the feeling that you're actually following some sort of storyline. Ever.

Sam Raimi? That's about the only thing that could convince me to watch this movie. But if Raimi is directing then that's a big plus in my book.

Although apparently he was involved with that Spartacus TV show so I don't have total faith in him.

Perhaps, it depends how they handle it. Certainly the main villain has more backstory and motivation, although I suppose it doesn't make that much difference if you're talking about forming a band of adventurers together to defeat a great evil. However, you also have that horde/alliance thing, which could be worked in somehow.
Also nearly all game movies are bad so I don't see why this will be any different as with this they will have to work in the games skill and equipment into the movie otherwise it wouldn't really be a WoW movie now would it?
I guess that thing about nearly all game movies being bad is kinda true, but I think we can at least give each one a chance. And will they really have to work in the games skill and equipment? And if they do, maybe the main characters become more powerful as time progresses, come across powerful armour sets and weapons which grant them power.

I'm hoping they called it "World of Warcraft Movie" because they simply don't know the backstory and games that preceded it. Warcraft in my opinion has a rich lore that can be made into an excellent movie in the right hands.
WoW still has a story despite being a MMO but it's not as rich because most players won't follow it. I'm keeping my hopes up for the movie but I still stand by the idea that the movie should be made ENTIRELY by the Blizzard Cinematics Department.

Plotwise there's a lot to choose from. They could make it a grand, world-spanning crisis, or a smaller scale collection of stories, kinda like pulp fiction. Or they could choose something to do with either Arthas or Illidan stormrage, the two biggest baddest badguys.

*Sigh* I want ot see a Splinter Cell movie, (George Cloney as Sam Fisher) But it gets cancelled. I think a Halo movie would be quite good (If you focused on the Marines more than the Chief) But people say IT WILL be shit, just because Halo killed their parents They aren't a fan of Halo. but then this, Instead of making a movie out of a story with a purpose in it, (Films need that, don't they?) The directiors make movies out of a Bulid-your-own-grind-fest.

Just for it to end. This will most likely mean that wow will strech to all 6 billion people on this planet (Not like it allready hasn't) and wow will be even more spamed by idiots that dont understand how to play it and i will have to revert back to everquest. Or it will completely fucking fail and will have nothing to do with wow anymore. Just if people who dont play wow here do not know what it is about heres an overview. killing pixels to get shinier pixels for you to wear so you can kill the best pixel in the game. Nuff said
