I never had any love for the main FF series past part 6. Save for the X-2, but that's only cause it's battle system is a giant excuse for making a dress-up game.

The Tactics spin-off's however are great fun. :p

Kefka was the greatest video game villain....ever. He actually managed to destroy the world, unlike every other video game villain.
No, stop, cease this foolishness.

Destruction does not make you a good antagonist. Having an interesting character (or else a TON of style) does.

Off the top of my head, better antagonists than Kefka include Doctor Cid from FF12, The Boss from MGS3, Luca Blight from Suikoden 2, Ganondorf from WW, The Queen from Ico, The Pig King from Mother 3, Glados from Portal, and Darth Traya from KOTOR 2.
I refused to finish 12 so I never saw Cid (if I'm half way into the game and I have no clue who the guy is, he wasn't the antagonist) the Boss wasn't actually the antagonist, she was still working for the same people as Snake and had volunteered to be a scapegoat. Luca Blight was nothing more than a psycho, no villain on the Gamecube even gets to be in the running. Since I've never even HEARD of Ico (I had to Google it) it's also out of the running. Mother 3 isn't universally available and is out of the running. Glados might be an antagonist, but it sings a happy song at the end, so lost too many points. Darth Traya regrets being the villain and lost all credibility as the villain because of it.

Since you added an arbitrary style rule, Kefka had style too. He was interesting (the first time through I always wondered what atrocity he would commit next.) And again, he accomplished the thing no other villain has, that scores a ton of points. And as far as soundtracks, aside from a couple of actual songs it's the same sound track as 7.
Kefka didn't have anymore style than a few lines that Woolsey just plain made up for him during the SNES translation.

Luca still had more character (and style) than Kefka.

Oh boo hoo you didn't have a Gamecube and don't know how to use emulators, therefore WW and Mother 3 aren't valid.

Similarly, you haven't heard of Ico, therefore it's invalid? No.

Darth Traya and the Boss are still antagonists, albeit tragic ones with, you know, actual characterization.

Cid's a major antagonist and important to several subplots (mostly Balthier's). Just because you quit doesn't change the story.
What, you add arbitrary rules and it's fine, but when someone else does it you get weepy about it?

FFVI is extremely good.

The graphics are... well, they work for the SNES, though it's hardly the kinda thing that will impress overmuch. The soundtrack is unbelievably good, both when you consider that it's played on the SNES, but also in fact in its own right. The storyline is well-defined and has a very decent pace (mind you, it's a JRPG, it is LONG), and all the characters (except the two "bonus" ones, to an extent) are well-rounded enough that one can identify with them... and there are MANY of them!

The villain is great, though even I, who love him dearly, have trouble calling him the GREATEST. He's very cool, and has a very simple and effective motivation that leaves him perfect for an antagonist. And, as has been mentioned, it's one of very few games that has the balls to have an apocalypse... in the MIDDLE of the game!

All in all, it's quite distinct from the later titles, but obviously also quite similar. The combat system works, and is delightfully breakable, there are tons of little sidequests and things you can do, and it is most certainly the game I've played the most times considering it only has one ending (just to get that one thing I missed, right).

ahh final fantasy discussions! lovely..
ff6 is one the best of the series indeed
but for me the hierarchy of FF games would be 6 > 9 > 12 > 5 > 10 > 7 (i haven't played quite a few of em but i hardly doubt that ff 7 will move up in the ranks)

Seriously. I started playing FFs at 7, like a lot of people. Actually, my first reaction upon seeing the box at a local retailer was "blegh, looks a crappy ass brawler or fighter". Then a friend showed it to me, and proceeded to bash my head against the wall.

Now, I'm not one of those "OMG FF7 IS DA BEST RPG EVAH!!1!!!1!111!!", I certainly like the game, but nowhere near such levels of devotion, but almost every time I see on the net an argument about FF7 being or not the best RPG, there's always a group that comes out with FF6 as being much much better.

Is it REALLY that good? I've no SNES, and I don't think it was actually ever released here (Spain), so I'd probably have to resort to emulation. Is it worth truly worth it?
People on the escapist have only been raving about FF6 since yahtzee said it was the last FF he liked in the FF13 review.

People ont his site rave about FF6 for the same reason they rave about valve. Because of Yahtzee.
OK time to come out of the closet have to say that I personally favoured ff's 8-9 I loved the junction system in 8 and the great plot in 9. add to that that 9 has some of the best fmv's I have seen in a ps1 game and quite frankly I cant see the appeal of 7. I mean when I hunted it down via ebay as it had been long since discontinued in australia I was psyched having heard all these people rant about how it is the best ff ever but after the first hour or two I was dissapointed, I figured it may improve when I got out of the nasty grey city and into the bright light of the sun but it really didn't. 6 was great for it's gen when you remember it wasn't made for the ps system and it kicked ff7's ass all over the room probably because it wasn't trying, and failing, so hard to look great with fancy 3d graphics and had a much better story.

It's at least worth a look at. By the way if you're looking for it on a SNES emulator you'll have to type it in as Final Fantasy III because that's we got it as in America.
The Internet doesn't belong to the US. You can easily type in FFVI and get Final Fantasy 6.

I think he was rather unique for the time period, especially. No tragic backstory, and while the style may have been arbitrarily added on by a translator, he had style.

"There's sand. On my boots."

Let's see:
Didn't play, didn't play, agree, agree, AGREE, didn't play yet, agree, didn't play.

Also, I'm rather partial to the antagonist from Tales of Symphonia. As well as most of the bosses throughout. Thus Rodyle = Quaker Oats Guy + Epic moustache makes me grin.

Final Fantasy VI is good. If nothing else, it is at least just as good as VII. One of the best things about it were the protagonists, who were all very interesting and varied.

Having said that, however, I never really understood why people liked Kefka so much. He is not likeable or charismatic in the slightest and the reasoning for his actions can be preety much be summed as "beacuse I feel like it!". Overall, he is not much better then a Saturday morning cartoon villain and comes off as even more of a joke when compared to the rest of the cast. So it never ceases to dumbfound me that people rate him as one of the best villains of all time.
Did everyone miss the fact that he became insane after the Magicite injections?

He wasn't necessarily what you'd call "emotionally stable" beforehand.

Seriously how many of you have played the game recently, and if so when?
I finished it a few weeks ago for what's at least the 20th time. Right after finishing FFIV and now I'm playing Chrono Trigger. Fact is while the graphics and music might be highly dated the gameplay is still as good as ever. The ability to highly customize your characters while not totally losing what makes them unique, the Espers and Kefka were all just incredibly awesome. There are few villains out there who were ever as effective at their job as Kefka was and for that we salute you my dead madman.

Yes, they usually do. They totally miss the fact that the man snapped after that and just doodle doo along with their lives. So yes, he does have a reason for being out of his gourd they just miss it and then whine about it.

Diane Simmons was an epic fight but better antagonist? Not hardly. Blindly loyal to her country to the point where she gives up her life isn't exactly a stirring character trait. Doctor Cid is your typical JRPG villian who was possessed / tricked by dark powers into doing "what's best for humanity" muwahaha. Luca Blight was basically another Sephiroth - destroy everything because bad things happened to mommy. I loved him but lets not pretend he wasn't one dimensional. Darth Traya was... ugh, just the entirety of KotoR 2 was just bland boring, half-finished crap. Traya was just the bottom of the rump bucket. Glados and Ganondorf rocked though.

The other reason I like 9 so much is because I enjoy dark story lines, and 9 was the most depressing Final Fantasy game in my opinion. I love it.
This is an interesting comment, because I've not played IX but always heard (as either a positive or negative point) that it isn't as dark as VI, VII and VIII.

I've lost count of how many times we've had some variation of "what's your favourite FF" but for the record, of the ones I've played: (VII and VIII) > VI > X > X-2.

The only issue that I have with FFVI, and I severely warn you as a result of, is the hype. In the same way that a person who has heard "FFVII IS THE BEST GAEM EVAR" for the past 10 years and only just gotten around to playing it will probably be disappointed. That being said I have just finished a replay of it but that was probably through nostalgia goggles.

You've often heard 6>7 (ouch, mathematical paradox) so just a warning that whilst it is a decent game do not go into it expecting the best thing in the world as you'll most likely be disappointed.

Oh, and wait for Shadow... you'll know what I mean when it occurs.

The issue with FFIX is that it all makes sense, and the overall darkness of the story makes sense in hindsight. I'm replaying it at the moment, having played it 10 years ago and hating it. However because I remember the key points of the story from my first play through certain things make sense. It doesn't really get dark until mid-end of disc 3 so as long as you haven't tuned out by then it's fine. It's a heck of a lot more subtle than the "Cloud, you are a FAILED PUPPET EXPERIMENT" of FFVII that literally throws it in your face of FFVIII's possessions which were still quite in your face.

FFIX has a lot of random offset scenes that makes little to no sense the first play through but overall add a lot of depth to a story and builds the overall story behind the scenes very well.

Woah, I go to bed, wake up, and I find this. Easy people, no need to go at each other's throats over that Kefka guy. You can let this thread die now.
