Seriously. I started playing FFs at 7, like a lot of people. Actually, my first reaction upon seeing the box at a local retailer was "blegh, looks a crappy ass brawler or fighter". Then a friend showed it to me, and proceeded to bash my head against the wall.

Now, I'm not one of those "OMG FF7 IS DA BEST RPG EVAH!!1!!!1!111!!", I certainly like the game, but nowhere near such levels of devotion, but almost every time I see on the net an argument about FF7 being or not the best RPG, there's always a group that comes out with FF6 as being much much better.

Is it REALLY that good? I've no SNES, and I don't think it was actually ever released here (Spain), so I'd probably have to resort to emulation. Is it worth truly worth it?
People on the escapist have only been raving about FF6 since yahtzee said it was the last FF he liked in the FF13 review.

People ont his site rave about FF6 for the same reason they rave about valve. Because of Yahtzee.
I disagree. I've seen lots of FF6 love for years here. Yahtzee only said he liked FF6 just a few weeks ago. Actually, what Yahtzee said in that review was probably one of the first opinionated things that parroted my feelings and not the other way around.

OT: I think that going into any game because some one said "it was better" is setting yourself up for disappointment. You may not have it hit you the same way, or you may not notice the thing about it that made it cool for someone else. All that said, I think that FF6 is at least as good at FF7, because both do something better than the other. It depends on what you want in your game, and I think a lot of westerners are looking more for what FF6 offers over 7: an open world to explore for quests. The FF7 world was open, but there was hardly any place you could go without being instructed to go there first.

Honestly yeah... it reall is. The characters are memorable, every single bossfight is quite daunting and challenging, the exploration's awesome fun, and the main Character Terra is possibly THE most interesting Protagonist in any Final Fantasy game. That being said, the plot hardly revolves around just her completely. The way all the other characters tie in around her story is just pure gold, and pulling off strong moves with Sabin is craploads of fun.

Here is the problem. The psp is liquid hot ass. Square is a company wanting to make money. They would aim for the ds as history shows. Remake ff4. Remake chrono. remake dq4.
I agree. The DS is FAR more popular everywhere in existance, but especially in Japan*. An FF6 remake would simply sell better on the DS. That's not to say they couldn't change the art style up from how they remade FFIV, and I think they should, but the chances of it coming out on PSP are much slimer (see what I did there?) than of it coming out on the DS.

*As in literally in every electronics store I've been to they have at least 4 times the shelf space dedicated to the DS. The PSP and the X360 are usually about the same or the PSP's shelf space is slightly larger

Final Fantasy VI is good. If nothing else, it is at least just as good as VII. One of the best things about it were the protagonists, who were all very interesting and varied.

Having said that, however, I never really understood why people liked Kefka so much. He is not likeable or charismatic in the slightest and the reasoning for his actions can be preety much be summed as "beacuse I feel like it!". Overall, he is not much better then a Saturday morning cartoon villain and comes off as even more of a joke when compared to the rest of the cast. So it never ceases to dumbfound me that people rate him as one of the best villains of all time.

that is the very reason we (or at least I) love him

I've loved FF6 for years, banging the drum for it on many a FF-related thread and I was stunned that Yahtzee would say he's a fan. Here is the JRPG in all it's, err, JRPG-ness. Taking-turns based combat, scripted story events, linear plot, and he likes it? Bizarre.

Look, Yahtzee brings people to the site, but for entertainment value. He's not a serious reviewer, he's a comedian. He's fun to listen to, unlike the serious, droning, number-crunching critics you find elsewhere. I never take his commentary without a heap of salt; I know he doesn't share my gaming preferences, hence the surprise. I will be shocked if he turns out to like Tactics, which I love even more than 6.

Uh.. Yes. Very good. Incredible, even.

I'd recommended you find Final Fantasy: Anthology for the Playstation, if you're going to play it at all.
Plus, you get FF V, which wasn't too shabby itself.
I couldn't recommend the anthology to anyone, the load times killed that so bad for me, I just got it for GBA instead, it runs faster than the PSOne version, and has a improved script over the SNES version.

Unlike 7, I find 6 is actually still very fun today. The 2D graphics have a charming quality, where 7's incredibly dated "3D" graphics sort of just... well, look really ugly.

IMO 6 is the definitive FF game - it was just sort of a perfected refinement of the core FF gameplay mechanics.

In what sense does being plagued by bugs and being filled with broken combos make it perfectly refined?
In what sense is it plagued by bugs?
Perhaps you can forgive me, but it has been 16 years since I've played the game - at least to any extensive amount.

Yes, yes and a million times yes, break out the emulator. I recommend playing the remake on the GBA, so download your GBA emulator and get a rom, if you want sites to find these just drop me a PM, I think the mods might get a tad pissed if I post the links here.
