It seems in the north of England there is some kind of feud against guys with long hair. Walking in to town I inevitably get yelled at out of car windows for it and I get persued by chavs because of it. What's your thoughts? becasue I don't see anything wrong with it
I have no problem with long hair, I have a nice mop head atm anyway.

North of England you say? Whereabouts?

I think it's kinda hot if guys have long hair, unless it looks shit. Like it's naturally lank and wavy or something. Oh yeah, and if it's unwashed it's also disgusting. But a lot of guys can pull it off

Don't listen to the haters. Whereabouts do you live in the north? I'm a Mancunian myself and my guy friends don't seem to have much problem with it here O.O

I had long hair for most of my life. In the last two years I got it cut off. No one ever said anything to me about it. You must just live in a culturally backwards region.

Living in Dublin with long hair was not fun, I've had people start fights with me purely because of the length of my bloody hair, had to put up with a lot of crap over the years.
I recently cut it though, I just felt like getting rid of it all, sort of cutting off the past.

As a guy with shoulder length hair, I've not noticed any "prejudice" in the South
It was the same for me when I lived in the south a couple of years ago there was nothing wrong with it but then when I moved up north apparently I'm a 'freaky gay'
Try going to some of the more underground gig venues in Yeovil (Somerset) - there are often chavs hanging outside looking to start a fight with long haired guys. (F**king chavs)

Anyway, my friends are mostly metal-heads so I've got nothing against it. Personally it doesn't suit me so I keep mine short.

I've had long hair for years and have argued for it. Most people against it go with this stereotype that men should have short hair and women long because they based it on their "experience" or something and say that short hair's "normal" or "natural" as a result when it isn't:

-Normal is just a statement of opinion based on evidence only examined by the person in question. If normal is based on all of the world's history, it would be normal for men to have long hair.

-Natural means that it would be biologically or genetically impossible for men to have long hair.

So people who say long hair is wrong are either basing it on bias evidence or saying that everyone with long hair have mutated genes.

Coincidentally, several people in my school actually wanted long hair to be banned from men even though if it was all men with long hair would be in full right to sue the school for sexual discrimination.

Its just because the North is backwards like that. Well certain parts are, generally though its inbred pond life Chavs that actually care enough to shout at someone. I'll admit that I often see someone with long hair(beyond shoulder length) and think 'they really need a hair cut'. However, its their choice and I have nothing against them. For the record I used to have short hair (a number 3 cut) and now I have it a bit longer(think Mal from Firefly).

I get in trouble for my long hair (not that long in my opinion, only shoulder length), but it's generally not chavs, usually it's my girlfriend... it gets up her nose and in her face when we hug, so I'm looking to get it cut... that sort of problem I'm ok with, that's a practical thing.

As for chavs though, I now generally disregard anything they have to say as it's generally stupid. I don't like to generalize people, but chavs... well, I've seen a lot of chavs do and say some pretty stupid things.

Like when I was on a bus, and a chav spotted a German flag and said to his chavvy mates (and everyone on the bus) something about wanting to pull it down and pee all over it... then it got really retarded, the conversation between him and one of his mates went something along the lines of:

'Why? What have they ever done to you?'
'Erm, how about killed thousands of us english?'
'I can't believe you're going on about world war two, that happened years ago'

pause

'I wasn't talking about world war two, I was talking about world war one'
'Oh. Did we fight them in world war one? Oh, well I don't know my history too well'

So many levels of stupidity captured perfectly in that moment... It always makes me laugh

EDIT: I don't mean to derail this thread with tails of stupid chav moments, I just thought I would share this moment with you all before I forgot about it again for a while

I have very long hair, but it hasn't caused me any problems so far. I did get some skinheads yelling at me from their car as they drove by one day about my hat (fedora) but that's about it.

Also, I was walking past a roadside construction crew t'other day and could tell they were trying to decide whether or not to try the cat calls or not. That was a little awkward all 'round, though I would have laughed at them if they had tried it.

But for the most part you can avoid gender ambiguity by dressing like a dude. And having a deep voice seems to help. :D

Although, being easily recognized as male but with long hair comes with its share of issues. First day of college I had a guy ask me where he could "score some green", to which I could not help him.

Also, forgive my ignorance, but what is a "chav"? As far as I know, there's no such word in the Canadian verbal library.

It's just the same douchebaggery of cultures who hate metal. Whether or not you like metal, they see you as part of that culture and for some reason have a problem with it.

Either that or they're homophobes with an extremely misconstrued definition of "gay."
It's also possible that they are yet another group who can't be bothered to learn the difference between a "podiatrist" and a "pedophile" until they're sued for libel/slander. Ignorance and fear of a given threat are far more dangerous than the threat itself.

Except for C'thulhu, of course. *grin*

Next time remind them that Lennon had long hair. That should shut them up.
And if that doesn't work, hit 'em with the BIG gun:
