As said earlier, Anonymity = Dickhead. Many just decide to start shit for the sake of doing it on Xbox Live. I usually just play in Parties with my friends unless we actually feel like pissing them off or just annoying them. That's all it really is.

As the old saying goes; Don't feed the troll. They just do it to piss people off and get a reaction out of them. Give it to them, and you make them happy and want to do it more. That's all it is. It also takes people to go through something like 9/11 in order to completely understand it.

...Just my thoughts. -.slithers back into his hole now.-

People of that age should never bring WW2 into any argument. They weren't there and didn't contribute to any of the ass-saving, and should take no credit for it.

Um, just so y'all understand, calling someone names != trolling. Trolling is an art form, like pedo-baiting. Calling someone mean names (or otherwise cleverly implying indecent acts with their mother) is schoolyard crap.

I don't know, I think it depends on the game: maybe I am just lucky, but when I play fightings on my PS3, or play TF2, I don't hear/read anything too offensive. Sure sometimes there are some random guys who say/send dirt and you can ALWAYS hear something like: "Holy shit, we are being had!", but thats managable and sometimes helps the mood.
Never played CoD, so it's just theory of mine.

Never met a foul-moth, prick, racist, sexist or anything of the sort on Xbox Live. Sure some jerk-offs who friendly-kill me but that's expected.

I play Halo:Reach.
same.

it's the only aspect of grifball i don't like. sometimes people just like to spam the hammer.
Hah I quite frequently play grifball, and I just accept that as a hazzard. I never fail to be amused when I witness a blatantly obvious betrayal on the opposing team. When it happens to me I just think "ugh, typical" and carry on because the respawn counter is like 2 seconds. On the other hand I have accidentally betrayed many times simply out of misco-ordination. As I hit the trigger I see a team mate suddenly appear in front of me and bam! 1 kill, 1 betrayal. Whoops.

Haha I love it when banter like that back fires. I'm not too good at it myself though :S

I always think of mine AFTER the fact. "Oh that's a good one! You should have said that stupid!" I say to myself. I always say I'll say it next time....I never do. lol

It's because there's no social queues. Why? There's no repercussions, because the person saying it isn't actually that person, it's SpartanDude165493. So social queues go right out the window.

Yes, a lot of Yanks are annoying as all hell, though one or two I've met are ok. But if you we're to say something like that to a Yank IRL, the appropriate social response is to get spat on, and for those that we're actually near ground zero 9/11, it should be a solid punch to the groin. Now, online you have what? You get put on mute by someone you don't know? Pfft, so? Serious flaw with online gaming. Yeah that's right, I just used the word 'serious' on the internets...

I was reading your post thinking, "stupid stereotypes." Then I saw this. I am really confused, when did heroin become a Scottish stereotype? Also, thought the sheep shagging was a Welsh stereotype. Does it go both ways?
Sheep Shaggings a New Zealand stereotype over here in Aus... just sayin :p

Sorry to hear of your difficulty.

As a general rule, people are selfish and cruel at heart, law of the beast, and will indulge themselves if it causes them no immediate perceived danger, no matter how socially inappropriate, "unnatural" or illegal their pleasantry is considered by their compatriots. If you don't agree, good for you, but work in the fetish community for a year and try to deny that one.

This is part of why I just don't give a damn about online-dependent gaming. I game to enjoy the fantasy aspects and fun of a good story with a little excitement to not remind me of what self-centered clootzahks the rest of the world are. Thus, mostly single player or local online for me.

Yesterday while playing some Call of Duty Black Ops with my friends late at night I got in a lobby with some people from the UK. I started talking with my friend and was greeted with

"Shut up ye, fat American!"

After I muted the kid that said that and said to my friend "God damn, that was uncalled for."

One of the kids friends out of the blue said something that fucking pissed me off. He literary said "Thank god for 9/11, you deserved it you fat bastards." I mean what the fuck? I did nothing to provoke them and I didn't even say anything to piss the kids off. I mean seriously why bring 9/11 up at all? After muting the entire other team I realized I'd be playing on yellow bar and my friend and I left.

So we join in another game and it's a lobby with about 1/2 people from Europe and 1/2 Americans, as soon as I join I hear a kid from the UK arguing with a person from the UK about how America saved Britain's ass in WW2 and I remembered hearing that same exact argument about 20 times in the last few weeks. Wtf is with people from America and Europe picking fights with each other?
Half the time it's uncalled bullshit any way.

I KNOW PEOPLE FROM THE UK DON'T ALWAYS START THE FIGHTS I'VE BEEN IN PLENTY OF GAMES WHERE AMERICANS START SHIT WITH BRITISH PEOPLE, I'M JUST USING MY EXPERIENCE FROM LAST NIGHT AS AN EXAMPLE.

TLDR: Why do people from the UK and America always pick fights with each other on Xbox live(and maybe PSN I don't own a PS3)

And BTW why the hell is WW2 and McDonalds always brought into the equation (I mean seriously fast foods and a huge fucking war that killed millions belong in the same argument?)
Because Microsoft's zero-tolerance policy cannot be used to combat inappropriate behaviour.

The sole "punishment" they have is to void the contract and disconnect them from Xbox Live, but foul language has gotten so pervasive they would lose too much money.

If they had the authority to warn, suspend and have probation for players for using abusive language then this shit would end.

Fun fact, here in Fes McDonalds is a pretty classy joint, and is one of the places to be seen, if you get my meaning.

OT: Out of my experience, the kind of people you interacted with are just little men trying to act big.

But they aren't anonymous. Microsoft knows EXACTLY who they are and can easily find out what they have said and hold them accountable though the most basic reporting mechanism.

What is really the issue is accountability.

The reason people are not all dickheads all-the-time is they are punished for the dickhead things they do that leaves them excluded from society till they learn to be nice or perpetually excluded as dickheads.

Microsoft refuse to police their network.

Part of the problem is technical. On a forum if you troll with trash talk your post lingers, gets reported and you get the dreaded system message. But voice traffic is expensive to store and move around while retaining high quality, not to mention slow and cumbersome to sift through for abuse. I don't think it is stored at all, even a signature of it.

I propose a system:

the session's voice chat is recorded on the console, while Xbox Live takes a signature profile of the voice-chat. If a user has a concern of abuse - playing it back later -

Another problem is dickheads like Cliff Blezinksky who have repeatedly and openly encouraged trash-talk in game even at official Microsoft events. It's all fun when it's PG-13 banter, but Microsoft don't seem to want to acknowledged how this leads to forgiving people disrespecting 9/11, sexual and racial insults.

People cannot hit the mute button quick enough.

The very least Microsoft can do is universal-mute those who have enough complaints made against them. They don't even have to be told they are universally muted, they can shout obscenities, abuse and insults into the mic and think that everyone is just ignoring them.

That's how you "don't feed the trolls"

Ok I've done this before (minus the 9/11 part)+(I'm from the UK btw), and I can say that there are only three reasons:

1. The internet fucktard theory - in case you don't know, it means that with anonymous-ness
people turn into more retarded versions of themselves because they feel unchained by responsibility.
2. Actual racism (hopefully not true)
3. Trolling

For me it's basically 1 and 3. I don't actually think there's anything wrong with all americans but if one has a prejudice to me for being from the UK I will use anti-american slurs to defend myself. (Nothing too bad)

Those kids were probably a mixture of 1 and 3. (Mostly 1)
But I've met some pretty retarded people in the UK and some of them actually seem to have a bad view of the US.

That's not the Xbox LIVE community, that's the Call of Duty community. Play a different game and you'll see it's not that bad.

I've been using LIVE for a years now and the only games I've really seen a lot of hostility between players are the CoD games. It's exactly the same on the PS3 CoD. It's because the CoD community is mostly made up of teenagers that try to act hard over the internet just because they can, and stupid people retaliate which gives them further reason to continue.

If you come across people like that on CoD just view their Xbox profile and go to submit player review and choose avoid this player and you won't get put in games with them in the future.
