When I see MW3, and Halo 4 and such, I see a milked game, with very little depth left to it. CoD has been on the release of at least 1 game every year pretty much. And Halo is leading the same style, more keep coming, when they should've ended long ago.

MW3 online, I see as a remake of every other online CoD game we've ever experienced since the original MW. This includes WaW and BO, and honestly, I haven't found a reason to enjoy any of these games online (Excluding the occasional Zombies matches), so it brings me to believe that MW3 will be the exact same.

Halo 4, isn't supposed to exist. I can't help but express my displeasure that they are still continuing when 3 was supposed to end it all. Reach and ODST for me were also very bad games online though, and it just brings me to believe that Halo 4's multi-player will not be worth playing after beating the campaign.

Gears of War 3 is getting a beating, because people saw what happened to Gears 2 (6 Title Updates and still millions of problems), and believe that the same will happen. That is how I felt, before playing the beta. Most people stopped hating on the game after playing the beta, and started to see it's full potential. Another reason Gears 3 might be hated on, is because it has been considered a shotgun fest. Close Quarters, no real variation in weapon choice. But I also saw that gone with the introduction of the Retro, Sawed-Off, and improvements on other guns, like Iron Sights on the Hammerburst.

Overall, people hate because they expect games to follow their predecessors closely, and usually they are right. I'm trying to believe that with these releases, they might be changing things up a bit, and actually building something new and wonderful.

I guess it's a combination of getting tired of the same sort of game recycled quite often with the story and characters decaying with each new installment. Seriously, WaW had some pretty brilliant moments, but to be honest the one bit in MW2 that I thought was pretty good was towards the end. Also, BlOps' story was just cringeworthy more than not. Whilst the multiplayer was all well and good, it's growing stale and many people simply just aren't enjoying it as much any more. CoD8:CoD4:MW3 doesn't seem to show much change to that trend from what I've seen of it so far. People are also tired of the way that games appear to be losing their diversity. There are LOTS of CoD clones on the market, BAD CoD clones, and that's really pissing off a lot of people. Also you'll find many people are sort of gaming elitist on the Escapist; they especially won't take well to what I've mentioned. Unfortunately, CoD8:CoD4:MW3 is likely to do just as well as the installments before it, and the moaning from everyone (myself included) will drown the world. ;D

I guess I like more intelligence and personality in my FPS games. Thats why I freaking love Half Life, Deus Ex (#3, dont let me down), Team Fortress 2 and the like.

Not to mention, I dispise Activision's business practices. New one every year, map packs for $15, several times for each game. Compare that to Valve and their Team Fortress 2. They released it with Half Life 2: Episode 2 and Portal, and have been continually updating it ever since with free map updates. Then, they made it free-to-play, ensuring that people could play for years to come without it becoming a ghost town.

Valve appreciates their customers. Activision appreciates how much money they can get out of every single one.

I have no problem with Call of Duty or any of the developers that make it. I just hate how Activision operates, acting as if gamers are just sacks of cash that deserve to pay all of their money to them.

I thought that Gears 2 was miles better than Gears 1, but that's just me.

OT: Basically people are tired of shelling out $60 bucks a year for the smae "core mechanics".

Like everything you have the group that love it, the group that hate, the group the hate it but still play it & the group that cant decide, CoD is a good mp although they haven't had a good story since 4 waw was just generic,mw2 was every act trying to out do the last & blops is interesting but going in guns blazing doesn't seem very black ops.. personally i feel they should ditch sp & sell the game for 40 they still make money with 15 buck dlc plus more room to expand on what they actually do pretty well & make mp that can keep people playing for hours on end.

Because copy+pasting the game makes the devs think it's acceptable to do the same game over and over and i'm already tired of that series and moved onto other games and games that deserve more like say BF3?.

Aww, I misread and thought you were talking about hats.

I don't see how anyone can hate something that they cannot grasp the true form of. I didn't care much for MW2, but I'll give this one a shot. That's more than I can say about BF3.

My largest issue with Modern Warfare is that the spend little to no time improving the game. Were they to knock back their release schedule to a Call of Duty game every 2 years or so I believe the quality of the games would vastly improve. Don't get me wrong, I liked Modern Warfare 1 and 2. But the games in-between are hardly worth mentioning. There is also the fact that the only times Call of Duty rises to the occasion is when Infinity Ward produces them. Infinity Ward as it was no longer exists. The name is there but the people that made it what it was have gone. What good is a family when all of them are strangers?

Modern Warfare 3 COULD be a good game. But, it takes a type of person that I and many like me are not to continue to purchase a slightly enhanced copy of a previous installment of a game no longer being made by it's original creators.

I think the biggest problem I have with COD is that it's had a rather chilling effect on innovation in the shooter genre.

Which keeps people making ADS shooters, or at least shooters that borrow heavily.
Aim Down Sights has been the best mechanic added to shooters since the twin stick.

The appeal of an FPS in the first place is to feel more immersed so that you are seeing through the eyes of the character you are playing, and when the character you are playing manages to kill hundreds of enemies by shooting from the hip, it gets a tad bit ridiculous. It's lazy game design if you won't go to the trouble of doing ADS.

CoD saved the FPS genre, not destroyed it.

OT: People hate what is popular. People hate Activision. It's pretty much as simple as that.

What's with all the threads about MW3 hate?
Have to go with this one honestly. It's people's opinions really. You aren't required to share them and you certainly aren't going to be able to change them, so why bother?

There does seem to be an inordinate amount of "why the hate threads" on the Escapist lately though.

Because better games like Deus Ex Human Revolution, Batman: Arkham City, Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim are coming out
Dont forget to add Saints Row the Third and Gears 3 to that list, plus Bioshock Infinite next year. To be perfectly honest, why bother with buying the same game with a different campaign (that no one plays anyway) over and over when all these other awesome games are coming out? Also BF3 qualifies but it has a truly gripping MP experience that really pulls you in and makes it feel like you're actually at war. Thank you DICE for giving us something different.

COD fans seem to be most of the reason people hate the series. There are so many fans who basically hate everything that isn't exactly like COD or Halo, and insist that those games are absolutely flawless, that it just gets really fucking annoying after 2 years or so. Also, the games don't make any progress from year to year, and hold back the entire industry with their constant pumping out of samey bullshit, meaning that other, better, more interesting games usually get killed by publishers so that their main cash cow franchises stay on top.

the core mechanics don't need to change
At this point they seriously do. I don't find it worth the time (let alone the money) to pick up new call of duty games. I'm tired of them tweaking the game a tiny bit, add a new kill streak or two, maybe a few more perks, and then add one actual feature and decide the game is done. If i'm going to pick up a game, I demand it feel like another game and not just some DLC.
