The Shining Force games for the SEGA Genesis are now almost completely forgotten. Which is a shame because they were damn good games. The second one ranks in my top 15 of all time. There are plenty of unappreciated games out there but SF2 is probably my favourite.

Deadly Premonition should be played by everyone.
It's so damn bad, that it's really quite fun.

So says Mr. Stewart.
Francis York Morgan:
I believe that the game, is not as unheard of as you think...
So says Mr. Steward.
Maybe not unheard of, but definitely unappreciated.

True enough...

Can't name any unheard of games at the moment, but as far as unappreciated games go: Super Mario Sunshine. I just love this game. It handles well, the level design is good and creative, and it added a new gameplay element to an already great scheme. Yet about 60% of the talk about it is how crappy it is.

Seriously, I would pay a full 60$ for Sunshine 2 (I haven't bought a new game since CoD4). I realise it may not have been groundbreaking like 64, but those were differant times. 3D had been around for a while, so there was no way Sunshine would be completely revolutionary like 64...

Psychonauts. It's well appreciated by the people who have actually played it, but it's not relatively well-known.

XIII as well, it sold terribly even though it was awesome, so we don't get a sequel.
I'd say Psychonauts is pretty damn well known these days. I agree about XIII though- I enjoyed it quite a bit. The lack of a mission select screen peeved me a bit though...

Dogfighter by Darkwater games. Basically, the concept was/is a 3D flying multiplayer TPS (or FPS, you can change the view). It just hasn't taken off, despite a highly involved dev team and some giggle worthy concepts like aircombat inside volcanos or triplanes carrying guided missiles. Part of the problem was that people either wanted something as easy to dive into as a typical WASD using FPS, or they wanted another PC flight sim (despite the ads for the game starting off with "This is not a simulator"). Darned pity, because it's different from pretty much anything out there, except maybe the old Crimson Skies game.
What's that? I'ts like the older Crimson Skies game? The arcade flight action game? I must check this out immediately!

EDIT: Just seen the trailer and... Wow. The style! The speed! The lack of Jets! It's perfect! 'Cept maybe for the locked crosshair but I'll let it slide. Looks fantastic.

I was a PC baby for eons, so mine are Scratches, A Vampire Story and the greatest adventure game of all time, Grim Fandango (although that one has a bit of a cult following, I'll admit).

The DJ Hero series is really unappreciated, if you ask me. Yeah, the music is the kind you either love or hate, and it's a bit more complex than other mainstream music games, but once you figure it all out, it's one of the most rewarding and overall fun rhythm games of this generation. And the Metallica/Kanye West "The Day That Never Comes/Love Lockdown" mix in the sequel is one of the greatest mashups I've ever heard.

CTHULU SAVES THE WORLD. it's an old school jrpg imitator that does story and characteration better then modern ones. It's funny, and a blast to play without being overly challenging.

I got the game on Steam, I don't absolutely regret buying it but I guess its my fault for not looking into the game a bit more before buying it. My 1 and only qualm is No kind of Flight Stick support in the game. I don't mind that the game is arcadey but I thought being restricted to playing a "PC" flying game solely with a keyboard was a thing of the past. Great game though, i'm starting to get used to the keyboard controls.

Ranger X, it's a side scroller on the genesis that did things the system that people said weren't possible on it. Was very unique for the time and still is quite the game. Don't pretend you've heard of it.

You controlled both the mech and his monocycle that you could both ride and merge with for different weapons and to switch your special weapon.

Flashback: The Quest for Identity, screw your Prince of Persia, it's all about Conrad and his gun and platform clinging. For a game that was released on so many formats (Dos, Genesis/MD, Super Nintendo/Amiga/Sega CD) it is SORELY unknown and I'm blown away just how few people know about it. To top off the amazing things this game had, it had cinematic cutscenes on a cartridge, I mean literal moving images and what not. Yes they were a bit simplistic in detail but a CARTRIDGE based game had VIDEOS.

I have to be a smartass and say anything made before 2000.

Seriously, though? Privateer 2. It doesn't even have its own page on Wikipedia, which, given the obscure stuff that does have a page, is baffling, and makes me a little sad. I really want to play it again, but getting it to work on a modern computer would take more effort than I have the time for right now. The last time I played it was on an old 486 I used exclusively for DOS games.
