Eh... its difficult to say really. Until recently I would have said that 8 was my absolute favourite. Then I saw "the Spooney One"'s blasting criticism of it. And actually, in retrospect I pretty much agree with a lot of what he said. Its just that the whole RPG thing was quite new to me at the time.
My brother had played FF7 and I'd watched him play some of it, but I remember thinking "this looks kindve stupid but also cool". I mean I remember asking my brother about it and the plot didn't seem to make any sense and he didn't really seem to know what was going on either, but it seemed like a cool game.
So, I bought the next one (8) and I kind've got into it, mainly because I was impressed by the cutscenes they'd thrown in there -- I mean I remember them being really impressive at the time. So yeah I played till the last disk or so, and then got stuck.
So, then the next one (9) came out and suddenley it had changed into a much more cartoonish style game. But underneath it was *basically* the same -- in fact it when playing it, I liked it and after getting over the shock of the main character being some kindve of rat guy thingy you get to really like it.
At some point someone I worked with on a summer job gave me FF6 on an NES emulator? (naughty) so I played that, and I enjoyed that too -- the graphics were very cartoony as you would expect for that era but charming and it was entertaining.
So I bought 10 and played it though again till I got stuck on the end boss. It did remind me quite a lot of 8, visually, so it had a sort of nostalgia factor going on there, and it was pretty entertaining. Basically, you notice some similarities running through these games, but I cant remember much of the plots to any of them anymore -- they all last for so long and get pretty confusing so after a while you forget stuff -- so I guess it doesn't matter really.
So, basically it died for me when they released an online game. I wanted to buy it, but I didn't have an internet connection at the time and I didn't want to get into online mmorpg-style games. So then I sort of fell out of the loop. That's when it died for me.
N.B I did notice they've rereleased FF6 on the DS so I might consider getting one to play that.
