I didn't like 9 so I'll say that's when I saw it dying for me. I'd have said X-2 but I refuse to acknowledge that as a Final Fantasy. Or even a videogame.
Totally agree wih you about X-2

easy questions: 9. I know people love it, but something about it didn't work for me. Something about the childishness of it killed it for me. I like what I've seen of 13 though, so I have high hopes that it will be excellent.

Oh, and X-2 was almost the nail in the coffin for me. I enjoyed X, but X-2 was awful. C'mon, changing outfits to change your abilites? Awful. 12 was OK, and seemed like a small turning point back to decency, but it had many shortcomings.

Here's hoping 13 gets back to the roots of the series!

BTW guys, if you started the series at 7, go emulate 6 on a SNES emulator or something, check it out.

A caveat, you will notice a LOT of the same story elements, but remember that 6 came before 7, 7 was the copycat.

If you liked 7 you will probably love 6. I have gone back and played 6 in the past few months and I have to say the game has aged very well, better than 7 (it's towards the end of 2d sprites so you can still appreciate the art and presentation, whereas 7 was the beginning of 3d graphics so things made in that time period tend to look horrible these days).

Like other people can attest, the villain is a great villain, you wouldn't think it from his appearance but the guy actually is probably the most evil villain in FF history and also the most successful one.

If you like Final Fantasies at all, for anything more than showy anime graphics in the later installments, you'll like VI.

Final Fantasy VII. It was okay, don't get me wrong, but when I started hearing from everyone that it was the finest game of all time and every RPG since started emulating it, I decided not to fucking bother.

I had fun with FFXII for a few hours though. Got bored of it quick... the main character just fucking infuriated me.

When they decided to simultaneously rip-off World of Warcraft and Star Wars, while at the same time removing everything that made either of them any good.
Seriously? How can you even begin to explain yourself since FF was released 17 years before WoW. And I'm a bit confused on the star wars reference as well...
You obviously haven't played Final Fantasy XII...I envy you.

I only ever played 7, 10, and 12. Seven was easily the best, and I thought Ten was good also, despite all the crap it got. Twelve, well, I put maybe ten hours into it before bailing. I haven't spent money on the series since then. Oh and Dirge of Cerberus I have as well, but didn't get to finish it since I don't have a PS2 with me. Its pretty good, if a little off.

Ok granted that I've never played 6 and I know 7 was a steampunk version of it but still sephiroth was better then kefka in that demented I'm trying to become a god but I'm a monster thing. I'm thinking that 7 was the remake of 6 pretty much from all that I get from it just set in an environment that modern people can more readily identify with thus giving it a slightly better factor of immersion.

... and this is why you should go play 6..

Kefka was just.. an amazing villain, as you watch the game unfold you will just be stunned at the atrocities he'll committ.

BTW, 6 is steampunk, 7 is tech grunge/cyberpunk.

6 has some technologies (with that retro steampunk style) some of which are fueled by a rediscovery of magic.

BTW, Sephiroth TRIES to become a God..

Kefka BECOMES a god.

Since it's over 15 years old, I don't feel guilty spoiling it, but it, unlike any other game in the series or most other games period, is very different..

Most games you are trying to stop the world from becoming destroyed.

That's the first half of VI essentially.

However.. YOU FAIL.

The world, gets destroyed. The whole planet's surface gets rearranged by catastrophe, killing tons of people, ruining towns, unleashing ancient sealed monsters, and from the wreckage Kefka arises, making a tower of debris that he sits upon as a throne and rules this ruined world as its God, having drained the 3 Goddesses of Magic of all their power to become the sole source of all magic in the world, the God of magic. He sits on his tower and fries towns with his light of judgement just because he can.

The second half of the game.. your main character (the other female character.. Terra is the main character of the world of balance, Celes is the main character of the world of ruin) is marooned on a remote island after having been in a coma for a year (since the day the world was destroyed), being taken care of by Cid. Cid falls ill, and depending on what your actions are.. Cid dies. Leaving Celes thinking she's the last person alive in the world, and the world is ruined so there's nothing to live for. She tries to kill herself but fails, and finds a bird bandaged up by Locke (one of your other characters and her romantic interest).. she then gets hope again, to find her friends, and get back at Kefka.

The second half of the game is that reunification, along with character development as you solve certain dilemmas in those character's lives as side quests, and then you get revenge on Kefka, to save what's left of the world (his ultimate plan (being batshit crazy that he is) is to end all life).

You then climb a tower of Gods that Kefka has overthrown and fight him, looking like an angel, with 6 wings 2 of which are demonic black wings (yeah, like Sephiroth but with +1 black wings)

Actually, I'd say that, for me, the Final Fantasy series peaked at Number 5, and then jumped right off a cliff by #6. Granted, the series did manage to grab onto a branch at #10(for those who can't understand a metaphor, that means I enjoyed it), but it didn't take long for that branch to break, and the series resumed its decent into the never-ending abyss.

Of course, I still want play FFX-2, Crisis Core, and Versus XIII, since as far as I'm concerned, they're spin-offs, and if Dragon Quest is any indication, spin-offs have the awesome potential of being far more enjoyable than the actual series. They aren't tumbling down the cliff like the rest of the series, they're just sitting precariously on the edge of it, and all that's left to do is for me to give each one a nudge and see which ones hold up.

I cannot say that it has died for me either. in stark contradiction to the first few posts FFX was my favorite (however its follow up was a miserable failure in my opinion).

XII however was only marginally good due to the fact that you needed either a phd in old english or wikipedia to understand what was going on.

You get a cookie for being awesome. The only thing I would add to the defense of FF6 is that Kefka is like a more comical version of Heath Ledgers Joker, which is automatic win in the villain category. He was amazing due to the fact that the instant you first see him, he sparks rage and fear in the player, something inside just clicks saying "I am going to hate this guy SO MUCH". His ability to stand out and his obnoxiousness make you love and hate him.

Dunno. I have FF2 and FF10 but they don't appeal all that much to me. It's Japanese, so therefore long, repetitive, good graphically, long, has a nice soundtrack, and is long.

I got weak after awhile, forget exactly when. But FF10-2 (was that it? It was the one with just the 3 girls) killed it for me.
