This kid, who I would say is about 16, gets ripped away from his family, friends and carrer, taken to a land were he doesn't know anybody, finds out everything he knew was destroyed 1,000 years ago, gets his hopes up about going home, falls in love, realizes he can't go home, finds out the only reason he exists is to stop the destruction of this new (in the sense of new to him) world, gets told he is nothing but a dream and once sin is destroyed aka he kills his dad he will no longer exist and he can never be with the girl he loves.
After all of that at no point does he even cry or even really complain about it. He says a few times that the love of his life can't die, which really isn't that bad.
I would like to see some people cope better that Tidus. He might not be the manliest looking guy but he's far from whiner.
On topic. I don't really think of any one person, I think of the game. If somebody says "say the first person that comes to mind you thin of final fantasy", I would say Tidus.
FFX is the only one I have completed the story to and you spend most of the game staring at him slowly running around. Auron would be next, 'cos I wondered for ages why he has one arm not in it's sleeve. Apparently 'cos he's based on a group of warriors who do the same.
I understand that statement fully. Tidus was really, really whiny. And so are all the protagonists after him, which is why i've been turned off of them. To be honest though, I haven't played 13, but doubt that its reversed directions.
Well they should have been, but in my opinion both baddies were too weak to really satisfy. Then again I did have a diagnosed over-leveling disorder back when I played through those games...
Cloud, Aeris, and Terra. FFVII was the first one I ever played, and FFVI was just awesome. I never got to finish it myself, but I watched a friend do it. Was pretty epic.
For me, primarily its Squall. VIII was the first game I really connected with (played VII before but didnt complete it.. I was young)
Although classicly its gotta be Cloud and Sephiroth, I love how they are depicted (and especially within the Kingdom Hearts universe)
So, In order of how they come to mind
I) Squall
II) Cloud & Sephiroth
III) Zidane & Vivi (love IX)
IV) All the rest.
ff7 is by far the best in the whole series, my fav of all time.
ff8 was the biggest timme wasting piece of crap, I mean i would groan to myself evertime i saw a new magic, "well" i would say "there goes about half an hour to stand here a draw it out"....what crap
ffx-2 will always hold a small and somewhay dirty place in my heart, linar levels kinda suck, but not having to rise other characters in your party that you never use....awesome.
Like with any thought of this type, it's really nebulous for me and involves a lot of things in small doses. But the simple answer is: Cloud. I picture just his face in Advent Children-level graphics. The pic in my head looks something like this

Ironically it doesn't represent FF in the positive opinion I have of it. It's pretty stereotypical of the stuff it gets made fun of for.
Squall, vincent, lightning and vanille. Squall cause 8 was my favourite. Vincent cause he's my favourite in 7, lightning and vanille cause there my favourites in FF13
