i don't think they should stop. even if they do they'll just make other games like Final Fantasy. might as well make somthing people recognize.

I think when companies have a series with success at this magnitude, they can't help but milk it for everything it's worth. I reckon they'll stop making them when people stop buying them. Even then they might try something drastic to bring everybody back.
Like sacrificing goats at E3?

It will end when it stops making retarded amounts of money.
This will never happen. Ever. In fact, Final fantasy never will end, it earns half of Japan's revenue.

I'm ok with it as long as they dont do an EA on us and start making the exact same games.

look at the last 4 or 5 entries so far, they are so wildly different in gameplay, atmosphere (one is steampunk one is school-like one is a world living in fear etc..),tone, pacing (FFXII had some very cool cut-scenes showing you what the villains were planning). Of course there will be some similarities like chocobos and spell names and some weapons but in general no franchise changes a successful formula as much as square do, i think that deserves a tip of the hat.

that said i think the best FF game is final fantasy tacitcs (better than FF6 and 7 combined) it didnt have random encounters every 10 feet, gameplay was its strength not some annoyance to get through until the story progresses, the story remains excellent until the end (can't say that about disks 2 and 3 of FF7), and the villain actually makes sense when he speaks, has proper motives and doesn't sound like a home-made translation from a one man team (kefka: wait? do i look like a waiter?) omg so corny

still love most FF games (best music in any game imo) with varying degrees

Just to bash the discussion on the first page - 7 through 10 and Tactics I consider the best ones. The series died when 10-2 (X-2) was released and is only dying more and more with every new shitty sequel.

And there won't be any "final" Final Fantasy. Something to do with the company being on the brink of bankruptcy when they threw around FF1.

FF, as I would describe it, is basically retelling the same base story, but they change the setting every game. I feel sad for not playing any of the more recent console editions, because, like Mr. Really, I love me some FF.

I heard somewhere that the reason that it was called "final" fantasy was because square wasn't doing well at the time and it was sussposed to be there last game.

Instead of shoveling down our throats more and more of that cutscene pie, Square Enix should actually try to begin making better gameplay mechanics. Not to mention that the story of FFXII was terrible, and if not understanding the story itself makes me stupid then, to quote Yahtzee, "I'd rather be stupid and happy then bored out of my huge mind". And it's too bad that I have to criticize it like this, as I actually like the rest of the series (or at least the parts where I was in control).

The "Final" Fantasy "series" did see some direct sequels over these years. Those were without a doubt, the worst games I've ever played. Anyone remember "X-2"?
I'd rather I wouldnt!

I think part of the reason FF13 is going to the 360 is that they want people to experience how awesome it is so they'd buy PS3s to play versus XIII and all further FF games
the other reason is the money.
good business for square, potentially good business for sony coz i seriously doubt that people who were saving for a PS3 will prefer a 360 instead because of one lost exclusive

The original game was going to be a stand-alone, but by the fifth installment of the series (perhaps even earlier) it was pretty much decided that the series would continue until it became unprofitable.

Which is when the "final" final fantasy will happen. But don't expect that to any time soon, Metroid, Zelda, Mario, Mega Man, Street Fighter... all are going strong thirty years after they were originally conceived with no end in sight. FF falls into this category.
Your right because if they numbered Mario, Metroid, etc. games instead of just changing the name the would have like a million Mario's.
