I would think perhaps Max Payne. The game itself is a short thesis on how crap his life is. Runner up perhaps Leon Kennedy from Resi 2. The Raccoon City outbreak was his first day too.
Oh yes, I agree on max payne.

Master Chief. He gets back from a mission to find that he's being sent with the other Spartans to capture some random Covenant ship, then gets sent back to Reach when it's attacked, then his teammates almost all die (only a few survive) in the ensuing battle, THEN he ends up on Halo. He's got another Spartan locked in a cryo-chamber and the rest of his surviving teammates stuck underground on Reach, battles the Covenant AND the Flood, then when he blows up the place he has to fight more Covenant to get home. Then as soon as he gets to Earth he's in YET ANOTHER BATTLE, then fights on another Halo, then fights all through Earth and the Ark immediatly after being captured and tortured by Covenant forces. All this with not a moments rest between. How can anybody have a worse time than that, even if he is a super-soldier bred for war?
That's exactly what he was trained a bred to do. Fight, fight, kill something, fight.

I gotta go with Isaac Clarke. He's an Engineer alone on a ship full of mutant creatures bent on eating him. What could be worse?
Master Chief is still only human, and no amount of augmentation can change that. Plus, the guy's been fighting since he was six and he's now pushing 43, how is that fair?
Let me put it this way.

All the S-II candidates were abducted and replaced by flash clones. They've known nothing but fighting and war. What would you expect him to do when he knows humanity is still fighting?
It doesn't mean he actually likes fighting. It's just all he knows, which is exactly why he's had such a bad day/life...

Tommy from Prey. His life just really suck. He has to watch his grandfather get mulched AND he has to euthanize his own girlfriend before finally telling her he loves her. I really feel for that guy.

Link - LoZ:MM The first 3-days (but especially the first day)...

Only god knows what went through his mind when he saw the moon creep slowly down upon the town as he ran around as a Deku Scrub with no way to stop it...

I liked Raiden, too, until they tried to make him cool.

Anyway, I'd say that being the protagonist in a video game more or less demands that you have an awful day. I'm pretty sure you could list almost any protagonist here, so I'll try to add something new.

Ziggy (Xenosaga) had a truly miserable time leading up to his death in the backstory. He lost most of his teammates (some of them to suicide), had one of them turn into an ridiculously evil god-like being, had his wife and son murdered by said man-god, and "won" at the end by spiting the invincible villain's "join me or have your soul eaten" demand and shooting himself in the head. Then his employers shoved a bunch of machinery into his corpse, turned him into a cybernetically-animated zombie, and put him to work as a what is basically a black-ops combat slave. About a hundred years of indentured servitude later, the actual game starts. He's sort of a combination of Alex Murphy and someone played by Jason Statham.

The marine in Doom 3. Every damn place you go is full of zombies and demons, no one seems to be alive to help you and the few that are alive either a) don't want to help you or b) are useless in a fight (i.e. scientists) or c) die shortly after you meet them, leaving you alone in a very large space station infested with all kinds of hell spawn and apparently second rate wiring on the lighting, not knowing if your next step is gonna trigger some glowing pentagram on the floor to summon a 9 foot tall demon made out of muscle and terror to crush your skull in. And keep in mind this is all on his first day of work

1. Link (always has a crappy life then has to go on some crazy adventure to save the princess and recieve nothing for his troubles)

2. Cloud (watches his hero die and lives out a total lie of a life)

3. Youself from Fallout 3 (Dad abandons you, you have to flee for your life, then survive on your own in an apocolyptic world, thanks Dad!)

Raziel of Legacy of Kain and Soul Reaver fame, he's not only having a bad day or a bad life, he's having a bad immortality.

the dude gets turned into a vampire, gets his wings ripped off by his master who made him a vamp in the first place, chucked into internal torment in the abyss by his "family" which eats most of his body and lower face (poor man hasn't got a jaw) only to be resurected by something that calls itself a god for his salvation, only to find a 1000 years have gone by and his salvation is to find his "children" have been decimated.

and then the game starts.

edit; and in trying to get his revenge on his "master" he finds out he was a vampire hunter before he was a Vampire, and then finds that Vampires are Gods children, Angels of sorts and that they will banish the hylden (demons) once again, which he attempts with valor, only to then find that he's not an Angel, he's a Hylden. So he's the architecture of the Angels destruction and everything he's fought for only strengthens him in the Hylden ways
