Why indignation? I'm not allowed to sign up for half the scholarships out there because I'm not a one-legged, blind, lesbian, aboriginal woman that lives in a 1km radius on the northeast side of town. At least with this one I would have a chance.
Edit: Why not get rid of these kinds of physical restrictions altogether? Make it based on what a person has done. I still wouldn't get any since I don't volunteer enough, but at least someone who deserves it, instead of the guy who only got it because he lives on a boat and has no ears.
I can see your point there. I haven't looked deep into the American scholarship system, but from the threads here and some other sporadic information it sure looks like one helluva clusterfuck. Sure, one that might've started out with the best intentions; provide opportunities for people who have the mental capabilities to go to college but can't afford it, but it seems to have grown into this...jungle of scholarships for all kinds of things for all kinds of reasons, leaving people who apparently aren't sad enough out in the cold.
Of course I don't know whether it really is like that, but it sure looks like it. I wholeheartedly agree with your statement; just drop the ridiculous physical restrictions. Well, that is, except for certain handicaps. Just imagine if a young version of Stephen Hawking couldn't go into college because he can't afford the extensive facilities he needs. That'd be one great mind gone to waste.
