I've gotta say the guy from A Detective Story from the Animatrix and the guy from Stalking the Unicorn by Mike Resnick.

Nero Wolfe with his assistant Archy Goodwin
Nero WOlfe?!!?

PHOOOEY!

Lol man, can't believe I forgot about good ol Nero!
Love him

Also Magnum P.I.
I grew up in Hawaii... he just oozed cool.
And he drove a Ferrari everywhere and yet was able to tail people unseen.
That takes skill.

Dirk Gently.
Yes I know it sounds dirty, I don't want to hear about it.
But he is a good detective. Not only does he solve cases using quantum mechanics and mapping out the interconnectedness of all things, but he scams old rich ladies out of thousands for trips to Jamaica to find their cat they lost 19 years ago.
You can't say he's not smart.

L from Death Note. He's made of win (don't mention that one time where he sorta died).
Mello is a close second, I only say that because you beat me to L >: |

Basil of Baker Street, better known as The Great Mouse Detective.
And what this guy said. That was one of my favorite movies growing up, thanks for reminding me of it.

I don't seem so unique now that I'm saying L. And no I'm not a fangirl who's just saying it cause he's 'cuuute' I understood almost everything L was gonna do.

though I expected him to figure out what Light would do to the shinigami :/

Inspector Gadget is a close second.

I love Dirk Gently. We should all strive to be a little more like him every day.

Leroy Jethro Gibbs. I swear he's one of the coolest guys ever. He's tough, and on point, but you know he's got some ghosts from his past poking away at his sub-conscious.

Batman. I don't know if he could be considered one but Samuel Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork Watch?

Dragon Zero

No one of note

Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (NCIS), Sergeant Joe Friday (Dragnet), and Lennie Briscoe (Law and Order) get my vote for favorite TV detective. Narrowly beat out were Adrian Monk (Monk, shocking I know) and Sealey Booth (or however you spell that, from Bones). Favorite Movie detective is hard but I think I'll go with Clarice Starling (the Jodie Foster portrayal in Silence of the Lambs) and Jack Mosley (the highly underrated 16 Blocks) but these are for lack of better choices as I cannot recollect many.

EDIT oh and Lincoln Rhyme

C. Auguste Dupin, created by Edgar Allan Poe. Dupin was a character that gave inspiration to Arthur Conan Doyle for Sherlock Holmes.

I like Dirk Gently, but he see him as more of a lucky simpleton, still, number one on my list.
