2) The Librarian's wife, who is 6 months pregnant (for utilitarian purposes, also hopefully she knows books)

3) An Olympic male Athlete (for arguments sake, of all sports) (If he really knows all sports, take him, at least his knowledge of healthy living will help. However, he would use a lot of food and is not all that important, so if he has any deficiencies (i.e. mental, history of addiction etc.) then no)

5) A renowned female starlet (dancer, actress, singer, songwriter, etc) For the entertainment value, it wil be a long 3 months.

7) A second year medical student (Yes, likely intelligent, knows about health.)

9) A rabbi (Maybe, if he keeps religion out of things (and instead teaches only morals, without the dogma) else I take the food.)

10)A biochemist (Yes, we will need smart people in the new world, he is clearly one of them.)

REJECTED:
4) An elderly male, famous historian (NO, simply because history will not matter in the new world, there will be different countries)
8) A police officer (NO, i know right from wrong for myself, the last thing i need is a violent, corrupt cop.)

I think that's too few people to repopulate earth. The genetic diversity isn't good enough, after a few generations there might some defects. Also no matter who i take with me... i don't have enough people to build a good infrastructure and support higher functions of a civilisation. (I need workers, farmers and such, not thinkers)

So i would take the most able-bodied, young and healthy ones, and try to have them genetically diverse, maybe mixed racial profiles could be the best (would have to look them up, but sounds fine to me).

No idea where i got that... but i think to repopulate the world and have enough "genetic flux" in the species one needs at least about 50 pairs and must "encourage" changing partners. Or was it 30 pairs? Hm...

Saved:
1,4,5,6,7,10

1: continue education. important
4: "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."- Winston Churchill.
5: Even the arts are important. if we do not have art, we become soulless machines.
6: this person is like an extra chance. he/she can become an apprentice to one of the choices.
7: humanity will still get sick. who knows? maybe this person can cure radiation sickness
10: humanity must become stronger to survive another event such as this. also can help with radiation.

reasons for exclusion:
2: no room. she would eat for more than one person.
3: sports will come back. unlike the arts, sports is not merely innate talent. we have a historian.
8: only 6 people left on earth. no real need for jails, seeing as all the criminals have basically just recieved a death sentence.
9: sorry. religion is important, but it too can be revived. plus, the Torah will be fine. as will the bible, the Quorah (Not sure i spelled that right- sorry to any Muslims i may have offended.) and other books. it's radiation sickness, not a world- covering nuke.

History won't matter? That's just idiotic. Why throw away all the knowledge of previous successes and failures other people have made? You're essentially saying we should start from zero, and be fucking cavemen.

2) The Librarian's wife, who is 6 months pregnant (F)
3) An Olympic male Athlete (for arguments sake, of all sports) (M)
5) A renowned female starlet (dancer, actress, singer, songwriter, etc) (F)
6) A college co-ed (F)
7) A second year medical student (F)
10)A biochemist (M)

Assuming that there are 3 Males (M) and 3 Females (F) I think we have enough to survive and partly repopulate. I think a Rabbi is a good idea also, but I think most people would bring their beliefs into the vault with them.

And you don't have to be Muslim to be a rabbi.
In fact, it's quite impossible to be both.
I said you don't have to be muslim to be a rabbi, not that you can't be both.
Saying "you don't need to be a Muslim to be a rabbi" is like saying "You don't need wings to be a cow"

Uhh, Im pretty sure its not like that at all. There are Christian rabbi's, jewish rabbi's. Basically a rabbi for every religion out there.

I heard this question the other day in my philosophy class and what at first seemed like a harmless conversation starter slowly became an all out philosophical brawl. I now pose this question to, members of the Escapist, and ask: who do you save?

The question goes as thus: You are a government leader who is aware of an impending nuclear war, and is faced with the decision of who to save. Their is only one fallout bunker capable of escaping the radiation (just go with it), and it only has enough food for 3 months, which is how long the radiation is supposed to last, and 6 people total. Keep in mind that these people that are in this vault may be the last humans and must reinhabit the vacant Earth. You have a list of 10 people to choose from...
1) A male Librarian
2) The Librarian's wife, who is 6 months pregnant
3) An Olympic male Athlete (for arguments sake, of all sports)
4) An elderly male, famous historian
5) A renowned female starlet (dancer, actress, singer, songwriter, etc)
6) A college co-ed
7) A second year medical student
8) A police officer
9) A rabbi
10)A biochemist

So now it is entirely up to you... Who do you save? Only 6 people can survive, meaning 4 people have to die.
In order of Priority..
1) Librarians wife: Save one persons life, possibly save another persons life (We can't truly know at 6 months), and eventually have 2 people from the pool of people to re-inhabit earth for the cost of 1 slot.
2) Female Starlet and college co-ed: Females are vital for genetic diversity, and restarting humanity. No stated defects, so females are essential. Because it is not specifically stated, I will assume that the ones that don't mention gender are male.
3) Medical Student: One medical practitioner could very well save every one else's life. Humanity should restart with at least some medicine, or else were in serious trouble.
4) Biochemist and Athlete: Biochemist has scientific backing, and is likely to understand more then just his field. Having scientific backing is pretty important for humanity. Also, the athlete likely has excellent genes. He is healthy, and since he has gained this much popularity and success, he is likely pretty smart as well.

Everyone else has abilities which are a little more niche, or not applicable in a post apocalyptic world. That makeup would probably give the best chance at survival.

The librarian, his wife, the policeman, rabbi, grad student, and biochemist live. The biochemist can help repopulate the world with a race of mutants that form a beautiful utopia and don't let us in. So, us normals and the people who didn't get in the bunker but survived are now raging a war with the mutants because of discrimination. Also, cockroaches became the dominant species, evolve near sentience, and are now a 3rd player in this war.
...Wait, what were we originally talking about?

You would be forced into being cavemen. You need more than a historian to continue culture.

Is there an option to add the guy who sells slapchops and shamwows on tv? We need him to ease the difficulties of post-globalthermonuclearwar society. Also, he is a specimen of the best group of people on the planet.

1) A male Librarian, his wifes pregnant, wouldnt want to split the family
2) The Librarian's wife, who is 6 months pregnant, new life and innocence
6) A college co-ed , repopulation what else...
7) A second year medical student, sickness
8) A police officer, protection and maintain law
9) A rabbi, good man, and completely innocent since his religion didn't end the world.
I think you need to catch up on the goings on in the Middle East. Israel has the bomb, and if they keep fighting Muslim extremists, their religion may be a factor in ending the world.

No, I'm not and Anti-Zionist. no, I don't agree wit Muslim extremists. All extremists, whether religious or political, are douche bags.
I don't agree with that either but the rabbi's usually aren't ones who made the nukes. And you don't have to be Muslim to be a rabbi. Don't try to turn this one on religion like most pricks on this website do because the end of the world will fall and to the hands of Politics.
I knew the way I worded it was wrong. I'm not trying to start a flame war about religion. Seriously. It's just that you can not assume that religion did not play a factor in the apocalypse. Religion has too much blood on it's hands not to be considered a factor.

As for nukes, the biggest threats, are from the Middle East, due to it's constant skirmishes, battles, and wars, the North Koreans, because Kim Jong-il has an inferiority complex or something, missing Russian warheads, due to the collapse of their government decades ago, and the United States, just for the sheer number they possess.

You are right in saying that politics will most likely be the decider in the apocalypse. But, behind that, there is religion. In America, if the far right extremists had their way, Iraq and Iran would be nuked out of existence because they "Dirty Rag Heads" and don't believe in Jesus. The extremists attack the States because they saw America as corrupt and not within their interpretation of the Koran, as well as for revenge against America's past involvement in the Middle East, including the establishing of Israel and it's continuing aid to Israel and perceived interference in other countries in that area.

In the constant struggle between Israel and Palestine, beyond the political and geographical fighting lies religion. Extremists in Palestine and in other parts of the Arab world want them wiped out because they are not Muslim, just as extremists with Israel think they deserve dominance other Palestine because they are Muslim.

Anything and all of these things will be factors in the Nuclear Apocalypse. Both religion and Politics will go hand in hand as we destroy ourselves.

Am I making myself any clearer now? I'm not trying to flame anyone or anything.

I'm just going to touch up on some of the least loved characters here and why there importance should be reevaluated:

The Librarian: not as rejected, but he basically holds in his hands every great piece of literature since humanity's origins. Homer, Shakespeare, Twain, Plato, everything... Think of the classics, the great novels that have shaped and defined Earth's culture. The only positive side to killing him is the forgetting of the attrocity that is Twilight.

The Starlet: she is the pennacle of arts and recreation. She represents every cultural achievment in the area of entertaiment: theatre, music, and everything that continually inspires humans every where.

The Police Officer: this is a new and potentially dangerous world. If those guys at Bethesda got anything right, it's that nuclear radiation= a fuck load of mutants. We need someone to enstill peace for the survivors, someone who can establish and uphold the laws of justice and freedom.

The Rabbi: he embodies the great religions of our world, something that culture has not gone without since the dawn of time.

The Biochemist: I keep hearing, "he won't have any tools", but keep in mind that this guy is a practical genius. Knowing how organisms, how life, functions is key in a new world. I mean, how many ordinary people would be able to explain the intracacies of the human body to a new generation?

2,3,5,6,7,10 Are my picks. I figure I have 2,6,7 and 10 for their intellectual strengths (And #2 because shes a 2-for-1) and 3 + 5 for work and making many children to re-inherit the earth.
