You're new here so I'm going to break it to you easily gamers and anime lovers don't really mix so don't expect too much from this tread. But either than that enjoy your time at the Escapist.
Lies, lies and deceit. Explain the popularity of JRPG's.
JRPGs are wastes of time. Not games.
You really shouldn't say things like that. It's like saying that I don't like Sports Games so they must be a piece of crap. It's not very nice, makes you look like a jerk, and undermines your argument.

Mugen from Samurai Champloo.

He is kick ass good at martial arts, and has a cool story. He is also random +5 which always win extra points in my book ;)

Either Edward Elric or Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist. They can do alchemy for goodness sakes! Also, they are rather fleshed out characters, with distinct personalities. Havoc and Hawkeye are pretty good as well.

...I suppose I shouldn't jump to conclusions and assume manga is included in this...
If manga were included in this, I'd throw in Negi Springfield and Shiki Tohno.
Yes, manga is included.
Then yes, both of them. Negi, for character growth and awesomeness, is definitely worth a mention (as are some others from the Negima comic).

Shiki from Tsukihime, however, wins out for his humanity and pure badassery, and (thanks to his Eyes of Death Perception) simply being one of the most lethal SOBs imaginable. Sure, he's originally a visual novel character, but his manga adaptation keeps that awesomeness and, if anything, expands on it (the manga version of the fight with Nero is probably the coolest fight scene I've ever read). All of it can be aptly summed up in one speech.

"You don't understand death at all. That's why you can't kill me, and why you're only able to kill a weakened woman. If you could see death, you couldn't maintain your sanity. All you can perceive is the part which keeps things alive. If you could see death, you wouldn't be able to even stand..... It's like the world on the moon, a desolate wasteland. Being able to see the 'death' of things means you are forced to see the world's uncertainty and fragility. The ground is like it's not there, and the sky seems about to fall at any moment. You don't know of the illusion that the whole world could perish in an instant. That is what it means to see death. These eyes, this power isn't something you can boast about like you did.

Do you see your mistake, now, vampire? Life and death may be back to back, but they will never face each other. I'll show you.

This is what it means to kill something."

Your all crazy, Mega Man is by far the greatest anime hero ever, not only does he save the world countless time from rogue robots, but he Rips off the good parts from them, and uses them to his advantage to beat down other opponents.
thats manlier than anything i have ever seen in my life

Yeah, I imagine I couldn't count how many times Goku has been said, but yeah, I'd have to agree.

Agree I do, but despite the fact that Goku is so one dimensional it hurts. Yeah, he does all this inspirational stuff, but he has no other motivation other than being just the darndest nice guy on the planet. The only reason I even agree is because for no other character on ANY show, do I feel this immense feeling of relief when he enters the battlefield. Weird right? I mean, he's just a cartoon character, and yet as soon as he steps foot into the fray, and music starts, my heart skip a beat, and I think "yeah, this shit's about to start." It's these big emotional gambits the show plays that makes it the best cartoon ever in my eyes, and makes Goku the genre's greatest hero. No contest.

It's a tie between Spike from Cowboy Bebop and Revy from Black Lagoon. Revy pretty new to anime but she's one the only anime heroes that I can think of who's bipolar, so that to me makes here stand out from the rest. Spike is without a doubt the best male character simply because he's the most human. He does't have crazy martial arts inspired supperpowers, he isn't immortal and he is an emotional robot. He's just a normal guy trying to make a buck in in the tough world.

In two episodes time.
Ok, I'll be the first to say that the show has some pacing issues. Especially during the Frieza saga (It took 10 episodes for Frieza's 5 min. Planet Blowey-Uppey attack to take effect, meaning that in those last episodes, the span of the 22 or so odd minutes only took about 30 seconds in DB time). But tell me that the first time you were watching those, you weren't tense as shit wondering where the hell Goku was, and when he finally got there, you kind of let out that sigh of relief. They may have taken more time then necessary to get from point A to point B, but it was incredibly suspenseful.

Suspense fails when it tries to stretch out for too long.

If I'd been reading it as a manga, where those 22 minutes of screentime would take maybe 90 seconds to read, that would be suspenseful, but the overly drawn out nature of Dragonball Z (and shonen in general) kills any suspense it might generate because you lose interest before the big thing you were waiting in suspense for bothers to show up.

The fact that the re-edited Dragonball Kai is only just over a third of the length of the original Dragonball Z speaks volumes of it's original pacing (and quantity of filler).

It's a toss up between these folks:

Edward Elric, because he's smart unlike MOST anime heroes.

Spike Spegal, because he's awesome.

Vash The Stampede, because he's one of the most interesting characters in anime.

Lina Inverse, because she's a classic.

Alita, because Battle Angel was my first Manga.

Nausicaa, probably the best female character in all of fiction, anime/manga or otherwise.

Roger Smith, because he's like Batman crossed with James Bond and pilots a giant robot.
