Just because Light is more self centered, doesn't detract from the good side of what he was doing. I mean yes, Lelouch turned out to be more noble, but they were both "good guys" in their own way. Also the OP probably would use the term "protagonist" to be more accurate to his sentiment. Of course I'm not him so I don't know.
While I do believe he was a "good guy" in his own way, I don't think it qualifies him as a hero. Heroes are suppose to be selfless, do good for the sake of good, and expect nothing in return. Light wanted to become a god. To me, that keeps from being a hero.
If we can consider Alucard a hero, we can consider Light.

Well, I don't really consider Alucard a hero (I didn't think about it before I asked the question).

Spike from Cowboy Bebop.

Doesn't need super powers, doesn't need magic or any crap like that.

Give him a BROOM and he'll whoop everyone's ass.

Well, if we go by your definition, there are very few "heroes" in anime. Most every character has a goal that isn't exactly selfless. Most of them aren't really that selfless.

True, their goals my not be selfless, but I know a lot of them would selflessly give up on their goals for their friends.

Fair enough, but I still think Light wins. How can you compete with the ability to kill people by writing their name? How long would Lelouch have lasted once he became emperor before Light offed him?

Well,Lelouch after he became emperor has no chance, but Lelouch before he became emperor has an edge.

But lets not this into a verses thread. Lets just agree that they are both awesome, and agree to disagree on whether or not Light qualifies as a hero. Deal?

-cough-
Lelouch vs Light, Lelouch will find a way to get eye contact with Light, and order the poor man to write his own name in the Death Note, and even with the most atrocious way to die possible.

I hope he does. There's a rule against writing your own name. If Light does that, nothing will happen, then Light will regain his senses and Kill Lelouch. /nerd

Sir Schmoopy of Awesometon!
if..uh. it was anime.
tottally Schmoopy.

My vote's actually in favor of Edward from Full Metal Alchemist
I actually totally agree here, URealms is sweet, I've been watching since the first badly drawn episode of the original series.
However Scmoopy isn't anime (and neither is Zero Punctuation) so definately Edward Elric from FMA, he's so funny when someone calls him short.

Guts from Berserk. He kills demons, with the biggest damn sword you ever did see.
