Spike from Cowboy Bebop. A normal person. *gasp*
Edward Elric from FMA.
Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass. Way more awesome than Light.
Ichigo's a pansy-ass, gets his ass kicked all the time, then does the DBZ thing where you suddenly get doubled in power. And never dies.

And you are?

All of the opinions expressed by people in this thread are wrong. The answer is clearly Kamina. There is no other choice.

PRISS - Bubblegum Crises / Bubblegum Crash. is probably one of my favorite "heros" in an anime series.

Other characters I can think of aren't necessarily heroines as they end up killing off the vast majority of the human race in some form or fashion.

Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV from Cowboy Bebop. Actually, Ed + Ein if I'm allowed two. Killer duo.

OH! Spike Speigal.
That took a long time to get suggested! Yeah, of course it's Spike. Best quote /quote hero from the best anime. Simple as!

Then you wouldn't call it bell peppers and beef would you Jet?

From anime, The Major from Ghost in the Shell, simply because SHE CAN HACK INTO YOUR BRAIN. If manga is considered, Asada Ryuutaro from Team Medical Dragon gets my vote. Anyone who can massage a heart and use a car's ignition sequence as a crude defibrillator gets my vote.

Jubei from Ninja Scroll.
He takes on some badass demons. Especially the rapey rock demon guy who rolls around with his sword - Tessai.

Motoko is the best because she will hack your brain. (I'm a massive GitS fan btw.)

Lain because she has already hacked into brain.

No, bad Vorty, need more obscure anime here!
How about Dark Schneider? He's one huge chunk of awesome. Plus there's two exclamation points in Bastard!! Nothing can beat that, right?

No, need something more obscure.
How about Santa? Come on, any guy that carries a whip especially for his cat-girl slave...
On second thought, nevermind that one (Dragon Pink is still the only series that had me falling off my chair laughing).

Ok, I'll settle for something only mildly obscure and one of the best series you haven't seen: El Hazard - The Magnificent World, watch it, it's one of the finest fantasy tales to have ever come from Japanese shores, forget the follow-ups and spin-off series, even though they're still pretty good the original OVA is all you need, don't forget to bring a girl for the last episode.

Ifurita - This nigh indestructable ancient demon god weapon was made to destroy worlds and is capable of copying any attack that's been used against her. She comes equipped with a luscious body, is packaged in an amazingly roundabout designed tomb and features amazing wind-up action!

And I've just realized she isn't the hero of the show...

I'll settle for the universe's most amazing chef Akito Tenkawa then, just because I found out an hour ago my Nadesico box set was probably lost in the mail and feel a need to cry. (The non-bootleg region 2 release of this series is exceedingly hard to track down in this anime-forsaken country I live in and has eluded me for the last four years.)

Just because Light is more self centered, doesn't detract from the good side of what he was doing. I mean yes, Lelouch turned out to be more noble, but they were both "good guys" in their own way. Also the OP probably would use the term "protagonist" to be more accurate to his sentiment. Of course I'm not him so I don't know.
While I do believe he was a "good guy" in his own way, I don't think it qualifies him as a hero. Heroes are suppose to be selfless, do good for the sake of good, and expect nothing in return. Light wanted to become a god. To me, that keeps from being a hero.
I think it was the fact that he had nothing or no one to fight for.

Light's cause was to rid the world itself from violence, but the world itself is faceless, it's almost like he is doing it for himself rather than others, like you said, he wanted to become a God, hell to what's his name he was. Lelouch was different, in the sense that he was practically doing all of what he did for Nunnaly, and to do this he had to make the world a better and peaceful place. He basically became a monster for the sake of someone else. And not only that, but lelouch actually cared about other people, like Kallen. This had an effect on plans he thought up.

Light cared about no one. And his plans only changed out of fear of being caught and nothing more.

Sephiroth's sword is bigger!

My vote goes too Megaman (he counts right?)

No, it really isn't.

Fate's is. (When it's not being a scythe, or dual sabres, magic is handy like that)

No it isn't. It may be longer, but it isn't as big.
I guess megaman would count, if you like that series.

I'm not even sure it's longer. I mean Guts himself is like Schwarzenegger size or bigger, and his sword is just about as tall as him, so 6'5"? How long is Sephiroth's? (innuendo aside)

I'd have to go with Guts anyways. As dark as he is, he really does only kill bad guys and demons, even if it isn't for the greater good. Spike still rocks though.

shoot i forgot to say who my pick is, and it has to be Duo Maxwell from Gundam Wing.

The guy was just amazing. He took out Heero Yui. He took on and took out an entire military base without his gundam. Plus his gundam is the best out of all of them. And he is badass.

And i tend to not watch anime in english dub, but I did as a child, and I am CERTAIN that the voice of Duo is also the voice of the Elrich's father in FMA. I just haven't bothered to look it up. And Gundam Wing english dub is the only reason I give the ocean group any shred of respect. except Brian Drummond, because, you know...

Actually I think they're both supposed to be 7ft long, but I'm not certain. I got bored of Sephiroth pretty quick.
And yes, yes he does.

Roger Smith. He's like a Japanese Bruce Wayne. Instead of fighting criminals with special gadgets and vehicles, though, he fights GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS with his own GIANT FUCKING ROBOT. But like I said, Japanese, so... that's natural, I guess.
