Bill Maher

Because he always tells the truth and has the balls to say the stuff that's too un-P.C., even for the average comedian.

I agree with you completely about Gervais... he sees himself as being far funnier than he really is.
Of course, not everyone will agree on that one.
I do. Finally some people who don't see he him as some kind of genius.

Frankie Boyle is amazing, Dylan Moran (you'd be eating ice cream.... AND THEN THE CAGE COMES DOWN!), Russell Howard and Jimmy Carr.

I'm going to see Moran + Howard next year...should be fun.

I'm pleased to see so few people mention Jimmy Carr and not a single mention of Jim Davidson - am I alone in finding them both completely repulsive?

As for what I like... well, it's hard to fault Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey. I'm also a big fan of Russell Brand, recent stupidity and controversy notwithstanding. George Carlin is always worth a mention. Then there's the folks from Mock The Week, they're all very funny. Charlie Brooker is great, Bill Hicks... the list is never-ending, really.

I've never seen anything of Mitch Hedberg, but he's often mentioned alongside other comedians I enjoy, so perhaps it's time for me to check him out.

Eddie Izzard is the funniest man on the planet, up to the point his style of stand up has filtered into how I talk day to day.

Bill Bailey is hilarious too, Denis Leary is angrily funny.

Hard to decide, but my favorite ones are Magnus Betnér (he's a Swedish comedian), George Carlin, Eddie Izzard, and Bill Bailey.

Bill Hicks died in 1994, and it is amazing how well his material has held up. David Cross covers a lot of the same ground as Hicks in his standup.

George Carlin, Emo Phillips, Steven Wright, Demetri Martin, and Richard Pryor are my Top Five.

Also, I must say that Dane Cook is a terrible comedian. So is Carlos Mencia.

Joel McHale, host of the Soup. I love that guy. He makes the hurt go away for a little while.
