Why all the hate when I say I don't like the Beatles?

Sounds like your friends could use a lecture on personal taste. While quality of music is somewhat objective, taste in music is completely subjective.

I myself have no relationship to the Beatles. Heard a few songs, had no interest in hearing more. That's not to say they're bad, I do recognize their music as quality, and I know what impact they've had on the industry, but that doesn't mean I have to personally like them. Which I don't. So yeah.

Ewwww, LIGHT ROCK.

I'm with you on the opinion that the Beatles suck. No, you're not insane. I may be, but you aren't.

I can tolerate them, but I don't see them as all mighty or anything.

Co-worker plays them sometimes at work and also swears by them, I have told him to change it OFF the Beatles however, if that counts for anything :)

My mom told me that when she was young during the 60s lots of people didn't like the Beatles. There was even a sort of Rolling Stones vs Beatles gang mentality; you couldn't like one if you liked the other.

That being said I'm not a huge fan of either. There are lots of people out there who are just like you OP, I know at least 3.

I do that to people who say they don't like Star Wars. Grr...
Kidding, of course. I enjoy the Beatles myself, but it sounds like your friends aren't people I would describe as friends if they flip out on you that much.

And, if you've read some of the other posts, you need to broaden your definition of Rock n' Roll. It started in the fifties and sixties, and has evolved ever since. It wasn't originally about Sex, Drugs, and Rock'n'Roll.

So you don't like The Beatles much and people are gona give you negativity for it. Ya it'll happen. I love The Beatles, but I wouldn't stop talking to you if you had come up to me or whatever and said you didn't. It's what you like, not them.
I'm friends with tons of people who like heavy metal, the new rock and rap. And I don't put down their music and they don't put mine down.

And about your last lines, The Beatles are rock n roll band and pop, rockpop I guess... for the most part. They were before things got weird in the late 70's and 80's. They had the biggest effect on rock other than maybe Elvis, who helped set it up in the first place.

I think that people get upset with you because they're misinterpreting it as you saying that The Beatles are not important. Whether you like the band or not, as long as you acknowledge the fact that they were highly influential, then I don't see what the problem is.

(Incidentally I'm not much of a fan myself. It's all in personal taste though, which is 100% subjective)

I think it's just a widely accepted fact that the Beatles are a good band, that everyone should love.

...I don't understand this logic. I wouldn't say I like the Beatles. The Beatles themselves were very dorky looking, and so hyped up on drugs that I wouldn't go to one of their concerts, even if you paid me.

But their music isn't half bad, even if it's almost always singing about some sort of drug or narcotic. I'd much rather listen to other bands.

And no, The Beatles are definitely not in my top ten either.

as the rolling stones are in your top ten, id say you just have a peculiarity of taste that means you dont care for the beatles, as opposed to the medical psychosis of a mind that has neither the beatles or rolling stones in their top ten and claims to like classic rock.

in all serious, seeing as you arent some pretentious alternative rock....person, its perfectly find that you dont like the beatles. its a simple nuance of taste, far from actual bad taste. the british invasion in general has its own style separate from most other rock of the time... i have no idea how you could come across people so religiously devoted to the beatles though... most people i know are the above described pretentious alternative pric-er, people, who hate the beatles on principle of being more than a year old.

They suck. So I'm with you there. Or not with you cause you actually like some of their music. I think it's all crap. It's what this generation will consider some random pop group to be.

Teenage girls go crazy for a group of men who look like boys singing songs about emotion.

Eff that.

I've only heard one song I could tolerate without bludgeoning myself with a fish... And even that was a cover of one of their songs by a chick artist.

That's definitely light rock.
Please tell me you don't think that's heavy.
A few definitions as provided by the web:

? A form of rock 'n' roll that is restrained in style and is characterized by the predominance of melody
? Soft rock (also referred to as mellow rock, light rock, or easy rock) is a style of music which uses the techniques of rock and roll (often combined with elements from folk rock and singer-songwriter pop) to compose a softer, more toned-down sound for listening

What about Helter Skelter is "more toned-down" or "restrained in style?"

This is 1968. The Beatles certainly had their share of songs with a light rock sound, but simply dismissing all of it as light rock is erroneous. Helter Skelter is widely considered a proto-metal song, and it was heavier than pretty much everything out there at the time. Even by modern standards, Helter Skelter isn't light rock. You aren't going to hear it on an easy listening radio channel. You aren't going to see James Taylor doing a cover of it. It may not be as heavy as whatever you enjoy listening to, but calling it light rock is off base.
