Skinny girls who say they are fat are honestly only saying that because GUYS are around. Why? Because we want you to say "You're not fat, you look great" or whatever.
This. If there's one thing in the world girls like more than money, it's attention ;)

The typical human being worries about their physical image all the time. For me it was acne and to a lesser extent "I don't care how much I can do, I have no muscle tone, at all" (though I am fairly skinny, can sprint/run, am fairly agile, and can do my share of heavy lifting).

I have to agree and blame the nebulous "The Media". Lots of young actresses and teen/pop-singers are usually slim and attractive, and many become sex symbols. So there would be some appearance influence/pressure there. Though why some people go the length of "I'm always too fat" I don't understand. In the more extreme anorexia/bulemia cases, people get their BMI to like 5% or something (mine was 18 last I checked, and most people are 20 or so) and still think "I'm faaaaaaaat". I don't get it, but I'm not a girl.

If there were more males in the media who were idealized- muscular, sexy, etc, then maybe teenage guys would have comparable issues.

I'm a girl, and I hang out with some girls (when I have to), and the majority of those think they're fat. And it's probably because of society and their parents and friends, on top of their already stressed out minds.
Most teenage girls (and later women) think they're fat whether they are or aren't, because all the magazines tell you how to "get thin!" and how to get to a certain size, or how certain sizes are what men are looking for because that's what is sexy.
It's hard to see past the skinny girls who everyone is drooling over and find yourself attractive when you compare yourself to them.

you mean american or white european girls, right?
different cultures tend to idealize different things in their women/men.

That's true most of the time, but a lot of the time if it's just me and a couple of my female friends hanging out someone always, ALWAYS, mentions that she's fat or that she's gained weight. And since the majority of the time she's smaller than me or others there, we're not sure how to feel about that... If they're fat, what does that make the rest of us?

I am in high school, so I'm not sure how it is in the real world, but almost every girl I know thinks that they're fat. Most of the time, they're not fat at all and they're just saying that.
I don't know if this is the case with the girls at your school but I know some say it to guys waiting for a reassuring remark back, such as "you're not fat, you're perfect! I wouldn't want you any other way."

I was also reading that teenage females have the lowest self confidence...
Though this wouldn't explain everything, I read in a newspaper once that people with more fat have more of what is sometimes referred to as the 'happy gene', a gene that helps you feel happy on a genetic level. If this is true, then it would explain why many women (and men) suffering from anorexia would suffer from stress, depression, etc.

If she says that to you a lot she might be letting you know she likes you.

You do not know sexy until you've felt a chubby girl's hips. I apologize if I come across as chauvinist, but it's true.
You are terrific. :p Girls need to hear more from guys like you, not celebrity super-stars who are all doing Paris Hilton.

Anyway.

It's the terribly skinny chicks who will have problems later in life. Women are naturally built for storing more fat than men, to help with child-bearing. Wider hips and healthy, natural fats and good genes will lead to healthy, long-living children. Skinny chicks who could be drawn on an Etch A Sketch will have more trouble with delivery, and their newborn children could be as malnourished if the mother has been starving herself.

Not saying that you should become obese before having a child. But you know what I mean. ;)

EDIT: Oh, and I've never told anyone that I think I am fat to FFC. That's an extreme case of a lack of confidence, thar.

Thats simple, and you better hope high school doesnt kill you OP. Every girl, old or young, small or fat, dumb or smart, wants their beauty reassured at one point or another. Thanks to our worlds sociology we see fat as unattractive and ugly, so its easiest for a woman to say this as it is universally accepted. So when a girl, or a grown woman says this, its because they wanna hear they are in fact beautiful and pleasant to look at. The girls at your high school are no different

i can't answer your question truthfully, but it's an argument i have with my girlfriend frequently, she thinks she's fat, and shes only size 12!, most men i think you will find like girls curvy, but (some not all!) women seem to have it into their heads that we find stick think supermodels with no t*ts attractive, which is not the case at all!

It's not just the 'media', by which I believe you all mean tv, movies, magazines etc. The media, appropriately, is simply the vehicle (medium, see?) for the message:

"You are not good enough as you are, so you must buy things to make yourself better."

This is the root of it. Creating this kind of psychosis in young people, as young as you can get them, sells things, it creats a market. Not only for diet foods, but for junk foods as well. They push the yummy, empty stuff on you, and then make you feel guilty about eating it. Then you buy stuff to make yourself feel better, whether it's a pint of B&J or an excersize video.

But even the doctors are in on it. Believe it! They work for an industry and they have become as brainwashed as the rest of us. Who cleans up when unhealthy people need treatment?

People told me I was fat. I also weigh as much as people much taller than me who are normal weight.

Well some girls just say
"I'm soooo fat"
so everyone else will be like "No you're not, you're like a size zero!"
"Oh my gosh! You're so nice, thanks!"

You know, like attention whoring.

But not all girls think they're fat anyway.

I guess it's pressure from media, peer pressure, etc.

I want to blame it on the Media. But they have a surprising amount of shows about(and i'm not being harsh) fat people.
Biggest Loser and Dance Your Ass Off are 2 (maybe) well known ones. Actually, I disapprove of combining Biggest Loser and Dancing Shows to make DYAO.. But thats just me. and lots of other people..
Oops off topic!
I am gunna blame stereotypes and stuck-up prats who say mean things.

There's nothing wrong with stereotypes. No matter what they will be formed by the general population anyway. Not to mention hes mostly right almost every girl i know (no homo) seems to think themselves fat while nearly blowing away in the wind.
