Because to be a man, you need to HATE musicals!

[sup]I'm a sucker for Grease, though.[/sup]

I'm a musical fan, and so are quite a few of my friends, but i've found that very few of my friends who are male actually like musicals. Even though there are some out there that aren't hugely girly (such as Sweeney Todd and Repo! The Genetic Opera)
So I was just wondering why guys don't like musicals.
Let me answe that through a conversation between Macho Man and Wimpy Willy.

Wimpy Willy: Hey Macho Man ! I just saw this new musical and it was amazing !

Macho Man: Willy, I always thought you were gay, now you've proven it.

Wimpy Willy: Enjoying a musical makes me gay ?

Macho Man: Indeed, now get away from me before your gayness spreads on my manliness !

. The end.

Hehe, this thread reminds me of when my father and I went to see the local high school production of High School Musical. They did an alright job.
See, my dad loves musicals and so do I. I'm not sure why he does, but I know I'm a big fan of acting and dance and stuff. I'd also love to say "you don't have to be gay to enjoy musicals" but I can't because I am. My father isn't, so there you go.

As for why guys don't like them? I'd say they already have the preset idea that any form of musical = High School Musical/Mamma Mia/Priscilla Queen of the Desert (I liked all of them by the way)

They forget about more mature shows like:
Oliver - A child escapes, basically, slavery, and becomes a thief who works with protitutes
Reefer Madness - A mockumentary about drug use. Half the songs involve Satan. And hash. And stripping. It's hilarious to watch.
Miss Saigon - An American man, whilst in Vietnam during the war, knocks up a local stripper. She then shoots her arranged groom, but he lives and goes on to seek revenge.
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - Neil. Patrick. Harris. What more do you want?
West Side Story - Gang wars! Murder! Betrayal!

I also like Glee, but if you're trying to introduce male friends into the musical genre.... not the best starting place. Although I have a few guy friends (NOT GAY) who have watched it and enjoyed the humor

I like a lot of musicals. The ones i dont like are the musicals with cheezy romance or so similar sounding songs you could mistake them for each other.

Well some of the more recent ones are really extremely and completely shit. Some are really good like Grease, Oliver, Phantom of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Oklahoma and West Side Story. Although as I already said some can be utterly pants by being way too upbeat and happy too much of the time and it becomes very unrealistic and freakishly picturesque.
Wait a minute.
You say that you like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Which features a
transvestite from outer space and an artificially created man.
And then you say you're not a fan of other musicals because they're unrealistic due to people being very happy?

Because Lloyd ripped off Floyd.
Listen to Echoes from Meddle, then to the theme from Phantom of the Opera. Feel free to shake your head in sadness.
But that doesn't mean it's not good, it just means that Floyd is the reason that it's good.

They're watching the wrong ones, mainly.

Assassins, Sunday in the Park with George, A Little Night Music, The Coach with the Six Insides, Reefer Madness, and even Sweeney Todd are all some excellent musicals.

Also, insecurity :-/.

I liked Blues Brothers and the pick of destiny, but for the most part, it's always that upbeat jaunty nice stuff that blends into each other that doesnt seem to make any sense in regards to plot in the sense that why in EARTH would you burst into song and dance for no reason? Although I do like "Reviewing the situation" from Oliver, because Fagin is awesome.

Depends on the Musical...

I love'd Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd, Wicked, The Fiddler On The Roof, My Fair Lady, Jesus Christ Super Star, Evil Dead: The Musical, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, The Producers, Chicago and Across The Universe.

I mostly don't like musicals that don't have a story like... Cats, probably the WORST musical our there, no substance to that one, just a bunch of people in creepy makeup.

Some are bad, but I do like musicals. Rocky Horror Picture show and Sweeney Todd to name a couple of manlier ones, and then Chicago and the Producers to name a couple of less manly ones. Good musicals are fun. But if I ever rule this country I'll be ordering Lloyd Webber shot.

Well the other ones don't freak me out as much as the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Also it isn't supposed to be 100% real but it is just way too perfect if everyone is happy 100% it just doesn't happen like that. I think we will see something like the Rocky Horror Picture Show in this universe before everything is perfect.

Not enough explosions, or ninjas, or fire in musicals. Now if you could create one with an exploding ninja on fire.....every man would see it no less than 3 times.

"Why this car is automatic, It's systematic , It's hydromatic, Why it's grease lightning"

As you can tell, i like Grease ^_^

i think it's because most musicals are cheesy and are seen as "gay" but i know many guys that love watching them ^_^

I do dig some musicals, from the glam punk Rocky Horror Picture Show to Jesus Christ Superstar. Some solid music.

I don't mind them but I lose interest in most things fairly quickly. I used to love watching old Danny Kaye films when I was a kid though.

Because most of the time they're happy. Men like Call of Duty and wrestling.
Either of those strike you as "happy"?

Well i wouldn't say to a person who likes it that its a pile of shit, but it was not the type of musical that i would call ok, for me it was all terrible.

I don't really enjoy people singing about their feelings in a movie.

Sweeny Todd was great, but would have been much better without the singing.
