(such as Sweeney Todd and Repo! The Genetic Opera)
So I was just wondering why guys don't like musicals.
Repo was an opera (the only one I managed to watch, which was decent), and you are talking about musicals. There is a difference...

Some musicals I like (South Park Movie, Tenacious D), but a lot of them are just annoying. Operas are even worse... I think it has a lot to do with the fact that people singing instead of talking annoys me to death...
Just because something has the word opera in its title doesn't mean its an opera. Just like Phantom of the Opera.
Clearly you have never seen an actual opera, which is just singing, no dialogue.
Also, Reefer Madness is a hilarious musical. The first bit of it is a little bit boring, but towards the end it's just amazing!
Yeah, I know that... and I don't remember any talking that wasn't in singing form in Repo. Clearly you are one of those people that is never wrong. Plus Phantom of the Opera is obviously not an Opera... It says it is at an opera, not that it was one...
I'm quite often wrong. But if you've seen a few operas you'd notice the difference!

I love Avenue Q and think it's one of the best things ever.
Avenue Q doesn't count.

OT:I like all musical that I have seen.Sure,I've never been to a live one.But all the ones that I have seen on TV were quite entertaining.
...why doesn't Avenue Q count? It's a musical. It was on Broadway. It won the Tony for Best MUSICAL in 2004. Explain to me how it doesn't count as a musical?

Well, as far as I can tell, most musicals are basically romantic comedies (MOST, not all. I can name several that aren't, but most still are) and I hate romantic comedies. Also, people bursting into song for no reason.

Cliché.

I love musicals.
That doesn't mean its a Cliché. I said most men, not all.
Still...I don't think most men don't like musicals, I think most men never saw a (good) musical.

Oh, and (yeah, sorry for the double post) it would be "stereotypical", not "cliche".
Okay, fair enough.

I'm just saying that from the people I know not many of them like musicals. And by not many I mean one, who is gay. So call it a stereotype, it's just how it is :3

Because they're annoying and silly.
That's my subjective view though.
Sound of Music was okay. But only because "A Few of My Favorite Things" has an awesome melody and it contains a family fighting to escape from Nazis.

I love musicals. Mostly. Not Cats, and my girlfriend roped me into Momma Mia, so we'll see how that goes. But I love Rent, Repo, Sweeney Todd, and Jesus Christ Superstar (The BEST musical ever). I just love to sing.

Easiest explanation I can think of is that back in the days when musicals were "the shit" rich people were loving it and the working class were hating on it. Women in the working class were thinking that getting with a rich bastard that loved musicals was the best thing she could do so musicals was something "up there". Working class dudes knew that they would be spending he rest of their life in a factory whilst the women could always get swept away by a rich guy and live the good life.

Thus for a guy musicals were always shit, for women it was something beautiful almost unachievable?

I dislike the music, and the storyline tends to be sappy due to the need to conform to the songs. Plus, most musicals are acted live, and any live performance has an absence of decent special effects.

I like special effects.

I'm a musical fan, and so are quite a few of my friends, but i've found that very few of my friends who are male actually like musicals. Even though there are some out there that aren't hugely girly (such as Sweeney Todd and Repo! The Genetic Opera)
So I was just wondering why guys don't like musicals.
Most guys think that they aren't "manly" enough.

Man, I've BEEN in a musical, and let me tell you, that thing was a fucking blast. Most of the guys I worked with were crazy Vietnam veterans who would clock you in the face and then take a piss on you while you're down.

Not manly my ass.

I'm male and I love musicals. Especially Cole Porter musicals because the songs just fit together so well lyrically and are usually a great big bucket of laughs. One can argue that it's just a stereotype that musicals are 'sissy' but personally I think that's just us being overly macho. I think you'd be surprised how many men there are that do indeed like musicals.

At the very least they'll say they liked 'Repo! The genetic Opera'

I see them as taking far too much audience time and money away from other forms of theatre that could really do with the same exposure. Not to mention the saturation we suffer with musicals. Some West End/Broadway productions have 18 month runs with multiple casts and crews, all of whom could be producing some fantastic Ibsen or more contemporary work, but endless repeats of Lloyd Webber etc. are where the money is, because audiences seek them out for easy entertainment.

Also, Sweeney Todd is one musical I do like, partly because of the refreshing difference in tone. Don't judge it on the film version, the two are very very different.

usually i don't like the music, and i don't like how suddenly people randomly burst into perfectly synchronized song and dance
