Why do most men not like musicals?

Well, as far as I can tell, most musicals are basically romantic comedies (MOST, not all. I can name several that aren't, but most still are) and I hate romantic comedies. Also, people bursting into song for no reason.

Sound of Music was okay. But only because "A Few of My Favorite Things" has an awesome melody and it contains a family fighting to escape from Nazis.

couldn't tell you, I enjoy a number of musicals and you just listed my two favorites, the Todd and Repo!
Easiest explanation I can think of is that back in the days when musicals were "the shit" rich people were loving it and the working class were hating on it. Women in the working class were thinking that getting with a rich bastard that loved musicals was the best thing she could do so musicals was something "up there". Working class dudes knew that they would be spending he rest of their life in a factory whilst the women could always get swept away by a rich guy and live the good life.
Thus for a guy musicals were always shit, for women it was something beautiful almost unachievable?

I'm male and I love musicals. Especially Cole Porter musicals because the songs just fit together so well lyrically and are usually a great big bucket of laughs. One can argue that it's just a stereotype that musicals are 'sissy' but personally I think that's just us being overly macho. I think you'd be surprised how many men there are that do indeed like musicals.

I see them as taking far too much audience time and money away from other forms of theatre that could really do with the same exposure. Not to mention the saturation we suffer with musicals. Some West End/Broadway productions have 18 month runs with multiple casts and crews, all of whom could be producing some fantastic Ibsen or more contemporary work, but endless repeats of Lloyd Webber etc. are where the money is, because audiences seek them out for easy entertainment.
Also, Sweeney Todd is one musical I do like, partly because of the refreshing difference in tone. Don't judge it on the film version, the two are very very different.
