People will complain about anything. Get over it.
Seriously man, I only got paid $75 to get Half-Life 2 when they should have been paying me at least triple that!

Also, Australia isn't in the Western World

OT: I don't buy new games, I wait for those nice steam deals to get stuff since I'm a PC gamer. Also, ours may be cheaper, but you've also got to look at how much money the average person has to spend in those countries against how much we do, theres more than just greed that dictates prices.
In our maps America (The continent) is in the east, Australia is in the middle and Europe and Africa are the West.

Also, they mean culturally and economically western, not geographically.

Why do people clump my entire country of three hundred million together when a few dicks are ignorant?

But my gamer heart goes out to Austrailians and Europeans out there, who have to put up with that crap.
FFS. I've said three times now that I never said ALL Americans. If you read the topic title it says "Why do people from the US" not "Why do Americans"
I apoligise for that post, when I scanned over the title I guess I thought about It wrong. Sorry for making conclusions about you person like that.

I live in Canada, and while prices for video games aren't bad, board/tabletop games here have a fairly big markup. For instance, one of the Warhammer 40,000 battleforces is 90 USD, or 110 CAD. The Canadian dollar has been hovering around 0.95-1.00 USD for a while now, you'd think that Games-Workshop would adjust their prices accordingly (or raise the prices in the American stores, just because they'd like to screw everyone equally). So I can sort of see where you're coming from, except that I can live without Games-Workshop's stuff a lot easier than I can live without video games.

Is Steam okay with conversion rates? You'd probably be able to find a lot of reasonably priced games on Steam, even without their midweek madness/weekend deals and such.

I kind of consider myself to have an, "It's ok to complain about the prices." card because I live REALLY low class. I'm still buying like gamecube, x-box and ps2 games. All of the newer games are way expensive, though my dad's found a way to get us a Wii and a 360 we have to wait for hand me down games from friends.
There are tons of PS2 games that are classics, my PS2 is still getting more use than my XBox 360. I can't really speak for the gamecube, and I sold my XBox because I didn't really use it much (only game I really liked was Fable, which I got on PC later), but the PS2 has a very, very nice solid library of titles that can be had for very cheap.

Just because it is worse somewhere else, doesn't make the original any better (only by comparison).

As I mentioned to someone earlier Steam used to be more reasonable, but ever since Left 4 Dead 2 they've jacked the prices up to bring them more in line with retail.

From what I know from my friends in the US, Australians get paid a lot less then us. The average wage here is around $18-$20, where was in USA it is around $10-$12. I may be wrong, but if that is right, I can understand why Americans complain about their prices.

A good portion of vocal gaming community (note, I didn't say "most" or "the entire") consists of nerdy teens with no source of income with bitchy parents, or college students with all the appropriate money problems.

The former are just bitching and should go get a part-time job, and the latter have a somewhat legitimate concern but then again it's their own damn problem (and why yes, I do belong to the second group).

Of course, with the apparent average age of the gamer claimed to be in the 30s, you can imagine that there are plenty of people to ***** about money for other reasons like huge mortgages and what not. But that's also kind of their damn fault.

And the rest of the world who end up paying even more for a game, well, don't get me started on those bastards.

$60 for a 4-6 hour game is still a rip off. 2 hour movie cost $10, so $5 per hour; so for a $60 game you should get at least 12 hours of game.
Except you're not paying on an hourly basis? You're paying a set fee for the game, a game that costs millions of dollars to make. By your logic RPGs should cost hundreds of dollars each then.
Movies costs millions of dollars to make. That what I consider to be the minimum length to equal monetary value, deal with it.
And movies cost a fair bit to buy on DVD, and have a far bigger audience as well. You can rent a game for a small amount of money too. Oh but you're the immature type of person who feels the need to tell random people on the internet they disagree with to "Deal with it" so it'll be useless trying to explain anything won't it?
Everyone has their value point, if you demand less for your value point then that's your opinion. I will keep mine, but obviously having my own opinion is immature.

I don't complain about the price I pay for video games and I'm American...this is probably because I decided some time ago that I'd rather Catch-Em-All then eat...It does bother me though when people in general complain about how much they pay for games...especially when they pay for said game and continue complaining about it up until the point that they actually start to play it. After that they will complain about the game itself.

I came close to buying Saint's Row 2 and would have complained about the price in a few weeks when they release the Saint's Row 2-pack thing...I gain +1 EXP. for foresight!

I only complained about it with MW2 but that was only because I'm a PC Gamer and am used to spending 50 USD. :p

Edit: I have since then repented to the Gods of the Economy and the Gods of Gaming respectively to ask for forgiveness and then proceeded to buy Assassins Creed 2 for 20 bucks.

I think that it's a legitimate complaint. Other countries may need to pay more, but - either way - it's a lot.

I think that games are too expensive, but I also think that about many, many other things.

Quoting you, but this extends to everyone that quoted my post, I think of West as being everything WEST of the Prime Meridian.

Shyeah, in 1990!

And then they were similarly priced in other countries, too.

TBH, I don't know that Americans complain any more than other nationalities about game prices. But games, like most high-tech goods, are indeed generally slightly cheaper over there, and always have been. No-one knows why.

Why are you generalizing all of us US gamers?

You should stop doing that.
I'm not generalising. I specifically said it pisses me off when I see people who live in the US complain about game prices. I never said all Americans piss me off because they all complain about game prices.
Don't like it? Don't read it. The main reason why people are complaining is the simple fact that games used to be cheaper, that and unless it's a teenager that's complaining, there will be a sense of "the golden age" of video gaming that backs that up.

You know, those people that say that games aren't as good as they used to be back in such n such era?

Not to mention, I don't like how you're making it out as if we're putting our complaints as a priority over other countries. I think most people will agree that if game prices should come down in the US, they should come down in every other country as well.

There are games out there that I feel are worth the 60 dollars, Starcraft 2 to name one, but there are a LOT of games out there that I don't feel is worth the money. So keep that in mind, because anyone else that says something similar would probably NOT be a gamer if they had to live in areas where the prices are a lot higher...

I know I'd be finding another hobby, because most games that I feel are unworthy of the $60 here in America are ones that I don't even own. Is this me being greedy? Nope, it's called not having the money...

When games were cheaper, it was easier for us who don't have a lot of money to play a game. Now that games cost more to make and now cost more to buy, we have to pick and choose which titles are worthy of our time. Which sucks because like any gamer, there are a game or 4 out there that I would love to play but will never get to try because I simply don't have the dough.

If games cost as much here as they did in Australia, I'd probably have only a small handful of games.

Well maybe you should ***** more about it, I complain because $50-$60 is a lot of money for the crap I usually get, hell it's gotten to the point that I only pick up a game every 2-3 months, and even then it doesn't seem like it's worth it anymore, honestly I think I will just keep my money use it something more useful and mostly drop the the hobby.
