Because everybody complains about game prices? This is a mild form of nationalism.

Because $60 is still a lot of money and just because we pay less doesn't mean it doesn't suck. Yeah, it sucks worse for other people, but it sucks for us, too.
This.

In earlier generations, games used to cost $50. You raise prices, people complain. Period.
Also this.

Yeah, that would've been a time when games cost thousands to make... not millions.
This is true. However, while production costs have skyrocketed, the amount of game delivered has not kept pace with those costs.

Some modern games deliver many many hours of entertainment for your $60. FFXIII or whatever, I'm not talking about them. But paying $60 for a (increasingly common) 7-9 hour game just stings. Because:

- $60 is $60 and that's a fair number of ice cream cones. If it's even more in XYZ, I feel for you.
- $60 used to be $40
- $40 used to buy you a week or two of game, not a weekend.

I find the main problem with the Australian prices is that they haven't changed accordingly with the change in exchange rates. Several years ago, paying $100 in Aus was equivalent to paying $50USD. Now that the Australian dollar is stronger, would mean the US price rise of $10 would bring them closer to equal or equate to a few dollars increase for Aus. However, the price increase here of $20AUD is equivalent to the exchange rate 5 years ago.

I live in Canada, and while prices for video games aren't bad, board/tabletop games here have a fairly big markup. For instance, one of the Warhammer 40,000 battleforces is 90 USD, or 110 CAD. The Canadian dollar has been hovering around 0.95-1.00 USD for a while now, you'd think that Games-Workshop would adjust their prices accordingly (or raise the prices in the American stores, just because they'd like to screw everyone equally).
Games Workshop prices have a similar problem in Aus. The battleforces that cost $90USD or $110CAN are $150/165AUD, even though the AUD has been pretty equal to Canada for a while now.

Seriously, it pisses me off to no end whenever I see people from the US who complain about spending $60 for a new game. People in Australia and Europe would kill to get those kinds of prices. Lets compare shall we.

StarCraft II listed on EBGames.com for $59.99 USD, the same for Halo: Reach. On EBGames.com.au SCII is $98 AUD, and Halo: Reach is $118 AUD... That translates to $88 USD and $106 USD respectively.

The RRP For SCII in the UK is 44.99 GBP which is equal to $70 USD. Halo: Reach has a RRP of 49.99 GBP, roughly $77 USD.

Seriously, you guys have the cheapest games in Western society. Stop complaining about it and be thankful you don't live in Australia or Europe.
SC2 is $130 here, neighbor. =[

I haven't heard an American complain about prices though.

Good games like Oblivion and Red Dead Redemption deserve to be around that price range when they come out because they are good quality, whereas some other games should be around $30 when they come out.

Well, as high as prices might be elsewhere, I have always felt that $50 USD was the limit on games. I don't know, $60 has always felt like too much to me. I mean, I think the reason I don't buy more games is because it adds up too quickly.

We have the cheapest games in Western Society, because we ***** about it. They charge you guys $120 a game, because you guys don't complain about paying $120 a game. If they pulled that crap over here, most people would either flock to the used games retailers, or switch to a cheaper form of entertainment, like movies or TV.

We all complain about the prices of things when we have the luxury of some degree of disposable income. A better use of our time might be to be grateful that we can afford to have high-end electronics for leisure purposes and don't have to worry about, say, if we're going to eat this week or die of cholera because of squalid living conditions; there are a lot of people in the world right now that would look at us comparing who has to pay what for video games and be filled with murderous rage. I don't mean to come off like an ass here, I just think we might want to examine our priorities. Commence trolling.

I've never heard any one complaining about the prices, besides our want to save money. We're in a recession, calm down.

I fail to see how wanting your money to go farther has anything to do with people starving to death in 3rd world countries.

Edited to sound less like me being a conservative prick.

Yeah... Australia is part of Western society.

OT: I haven't noticed any one, American or otherwise complaining about game prices, aside from being mentioned in general "crappy economy" or "I can't afford anything, much less games" type topics.

The difference is that Australians have always been charged more than everyone else. We do complain about it. A lot. Most publishers make up some bullshit about the dollar being too low which they did when we were buying 60 US cents, but when buying 90 US cents they say nothing.

Also on an unrelated note, I hope to get my hot topic badge hee hee!

It also would've been a time when a dollar was worth about 4 times as much as it is now, making those games cost $60-$120 in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars. Sorry, you didn't quite /thread. You just exposed the fact that you are unaware of the occurrence of inflation.

But to all the Europeans and Australians in this thread: You have only yourselves and your government to blame for your high game prices. Your prices are so high for two reasons: high tariffs and relatively low demand. If more people in the EU and AUS gamed on non-Wii systems, distributors and publishers would be better able to take advantage of economies of scale. As it is, a fewer number of people have to bear the brunt of the localization and shipping costs.

The reason i complain, is because the only reason games are so expensive is because the publisher makes about 60-70% of what the game makes, and they want to squeeze every penny they can out of people. Games used to be cheap, but with all the people and advertisment being put into the games, the prices are getting ridiculous.

And i dont think its just simply "people from the US". Nobody wants to burn a whole in their pocket to be entertained. And considering we're in a pretty bad recession (or depression...i dunno. Our government doesnt tell us anything, im not sure what it is anymore) spending 60 dollars is a big purchase. Granted, other countries do spend more, but i dunno, do other people in those countries get paid more money? Im not up to brush on how other countries work, so correct me if im wrong, which i most likely am on this.

I dont have a internet connection between my 360 and my modem. This means I am paying for less content (Bioshock being an example of a game that doesnt bother with that bs, and I want to hug Irrational Games for making it sp only). Why would I play $60 for say...Modern Warfare 2? Im already losing a good amount of the content, why charge me like that?

Why would you buy a game when you only intend to play half of the content?
