Why do people hate griefers?

I think people should remember that there is a big difference between watching someone getting griefed, and getting griefed yourself. One might possibly be funny to watch, while the other is annoying and anger-invoking. While it might be funny to watch the pyro flame in front of a sniper that eventually gets the sniper killed, it isn't nearly as fun to be that sniper.

When you're playing a round of Gears of War and some guy is just standing around shooting the wall and getting killed, it's useless and frustrating if you're trying to play the game. In team based games like Team Fortress 2, if someone's not doing their job it affects the whole team. It sort of ruins the game.

I love griefers, they're hilarious. I especially liked team roomba. brilliant griefing there.
Seeing that comment made me feel all warm and fuzzy ^^

As i've said before, i am an occasional griefer...

I was a member of Team Roomba, and i am also a member of the Goon Swarm in Eve Online, and a member of Encyclopedia Dramatica, and 4chan, and SomethingAwful, I am a distinguished member of the internet...

From a griefer's perspective, i can tell you that we do it for the sole purpose of LULZ, and in some cases, it can actually be funny for others aswell (Team Fortress 2 griefing for example, is funny even for the guys getting griefed...)

In WoW, we are fail druids and priests INTENTIONALLY, in Eve, we steal, kill and scam everything that flies, in tf 2 we block sentries with dispensers, we make teleporter traps, we build teleporter exits in front of enemy sentries or spies that are ready to stab, we push snipers around when they are trying to aim, we uber enemy spies, we use the flamethrower in front of snipers, in left 4 dead we set friendlies on fire, detonate a million gas canisters next to them, we startle the Witch, push boomers into teammates and detonate, we keep hitting them with melee to make their views twitch, and my prsonal favorite, we snipe teammates "by accident" during a swarm attack, in call o' duty we team attack through walls and yell ACCIDENT, etc...

And i say again, i am all for griefing, but when you start hacking to grief, you are just being a complete dick...
... Actually you were a total dick at around line two there. None of what you said before the hacking comment sounded any less dickish than hacking. To be honest, your comment about hackers makes me wonder if it is simply because you can't and they do and then you get griefed while griefing. Just an observation but it does raise the curiosity.

So you basically put your own needs above others out of some sense of superiority. It's bullying plain and simple. For a long time it was the jock kicking over a kid's sand castle. Or, excessive hazing on sports teams or in school. Some people can only derive joy by hurting others. You can position it however you like, but in the end, your just being mean. I'm sure this will elicit some kind of flame response, but I speak the truth.

I can understand trolls. They're hate based. But griefing is funny sometimes. Some of it can be hate based, but for the most part it's just another way to play the game, albiet not the best way... When people team kill me I try to join them and mess up the game, I don't rage like I used to. Looking back, raging against griefers is stupid. It's a game. It's ment for fun. It's not ment to be taken seriously. So your stats get messed up slightly. Big deal. What I don't get is why do people take video games so seriously? (Why so serious?)
And no. Do not troll. You can go against my argument, but try not to be scathing.
Agree to a point: Joining another player's server with the intention of ruining the fun for others is troublesome. Creating your own server and playing with friends and other people who just want to have a good time is perfectly fine and even encouraged by me.

The irony of the griefer is we've got someone who's obviously got so much time on their hands that they get bored with the actual multiplayer of a game and then feel the need to get their jollies by fucking with other people's enjoyment. A lot of the victims of griefing probably work full time jobs, and maybe even have families, so they've got a comparably smaller amount of time to play videogames during their week. Suddenly 25% to 50% of their time is taken up dealing with some douche, and then the griefers wonder why people get so worked up!

I taunt greifers and trolls to no end.

Especially trolls because some don't have any sense of sarcasm. Really easy.
How do you know the trolls aren't pretending not to get your sarcasm in order to troll in some way?
...THOSE CUNNING BASTARDS!

Why does everyone keep saying "jollies?"
OT: I can understand the people who work a lot, but what about the obnoxious little kids that scream into the earphones?

You just said you are an occasional griefer, yet you put a whole paragraph on what you do to piss people off. See, you aren't making griefers look any better with that whole paragraph. And in that team roomba video, building sentries under the level doesn't seem funny at all. the other team couldn't do anything to stop that, so they are basically screwed. The fact that you find this funny is rather disturbing. I sometimes mess around in TF 2 before the round starts, like use the KGB against another Heavy with the KGB, because we both consent to it and it can be funny to everyone. As soon as the round starts, then we quit screwing around. If you grief like your above post and it is just with friends on your own server, then its fine, because no one else will have to deal with your retarded idea of fun. IF you find that you must grief, DO IT WITH FRIENDS ONLY. Incidentally I smell a troll...

I find those guys to be pretty annoying and griefers to an extent. But what I really hate are those guys who play really annoying music into their mics. That just ruins the game play.

I enjoy griefing because its basically just in-game trolling. The two are pretty inseparable

There's a difference between griefing and bullying. Bullying is physical pain, which the victim will feel it no matter what. Plus it's consistant over time. Yes, both are going towards the same end, but the way they do it makes a big difference.
Plus, if someone kills me in a hilarious way I'll just laugh along with them. Just like if an enemy frags me pretty well I'd acknowlegde it.

Idiot. You may as well ask "why do people hate bullies" or "why do people hate jerks" or "why do people hate sadists". All three of the above apply perfectly to griefers. They're vile, pathetic specimens of human beings whose only aim is to cause pain and suffering to others. If you have any sympathy or understanding of their actions, I don't want to know you. Griefers are complete and utter irredeemable pricks and they deserve to be banned from any and every game in existance. Actually, they deserve a lot more than that, but I'm trying to keep it vaguely sensible here.

You epic fail if your definition of bullying is limited solely to physical pain. Apparently you've never seen a child in school ostracized by his or her entire peer group, harrassed by having their possessions repeatedly stolen, or taunted en mass by an entire group of bullies. You fail most strongly. Griefers are bullies.

I didn't say hacking. Hacking, game pirates, and virus writers should be kicked off the internet completely...somehow.
ARG YE BE HATIN MA PIRATE MATES, in all seriousness it can be fun if no one else is playing seriously.

Ya, I see a large difference in bullies and griefers. Bullies do severe physical or mental damage to people over a period of time. Griefers do slightly annnoying things to people for a few minutes. And why are you so mad at them? Most of you people are getting way to angry about this. It's like those people that do road rage.
Edit: there. Made my definition a little clearer. If people are picking on you, just tell the principle... Besides, all of those other things you added don't really apply to griefers either...

Ummm well, to be a griefer (by the name) entails giving someone grief by whatever method. As a result they are going to be disliked because they annoy people. If you've got a couple of hours to play a given game and some guy follows you around and makes your life miserable for his personal lulz, needless to say that's not a good thing from your perspective.

The flip side to the phenomena is of course that it can be amusing for OTHER people to watch and know about. The whole Schaetenfreud factor. It's also amusing when viewed from the perspective of detachment:

Watch this video (no seriously, watch it) and you'll see what I mean about being amusing when detached from the reality of it happening to you. This video makes the point beautifully, especially the ending:
