Why do people hate griefers?

Okay, where to begin...

Saying "It's only a game, games are for fun, why so serious" is not a good argument for griefing, because what griefers are doing is spoiling the fun of those who just want to play properly. From the point of view of other gamers, griefers are basically anti-fun.

You perpetrate the gaming version of trolling, and expect not to be trolled. You selfishly ruin other people's downtime for your own enjoyment, and expect not to be hated. I really don't understand you.

I don't think they expect not to be hated. I think being hated is half the joke.
True, most of them probably don't. But I was mainly addressing the OP, who doesn't appear to feel the same way.

Ummm well, to be a griefer (by the name) entails giving someone grief by whatever method. As a result they are going to be disliked because they annoy people. If you've got a couple of hours to play a given game and some guy follows you around and makes your life miserable for his personal lulz, needless to say that's not a good thing from your perspective.

The flip side to the phenomena is of course that it can be amusing for OTHER people to watch and know about. The whole Schaetenfreud factor. It's also amusing when viewed from the perspective of detachment:

Watch this video (no seriously, watch it) and you'll see what I mean about being amusing when detached from the reality of it happening to you. This video makes the point beautifully, especially the ending:

Well, it's probably a Rickroll, but whatever...
Edit: Nevermind. That was pretty good. I don't think that kind of thing is funny, it just makes people wait or do repetitive stuff over and over again. I try to be creative and do it to as many people as I can, rather than just one guy.

Idiot. You may as well ask "why do people hate bullies" or "why do people hate jerks" or "why do people hate sadists". All three of the above apply perfectly to griefers. They're vile, pathetic specimens of human beings whose only aim is to cause pain and suffering to others. If you have any sympathy or understanding of their actions, I don't want to know you. Griefers are complete and utter irredeemable pricks and they deserve to be banned from any and every game in existance. Actually, they deserve a lot more than that, but I'm trying to keep it vaguely sensible here.
Nah, you are over reacting...

Must be that time of the month >.>

But anyway...

Most of us griefers, that "deserve" (fail grammar, mister PMS!) to get banned all over the place (according to your tiny little pathetic brain), tend to be the best at the games we grief in...

That is why we start griefing, we have become so good at a game that playing it normally is boring to us, so we increase our fun factor by griefing...

Also, i tend to agree with the point that spawn killing is the lowest form of griefing after hacking...
And this, kids, is another reason to hate them. Arrogance. Notice how he talks about the plight of the griefer and how this is justification for being a total ass.

Ya, basically what you do is the equivalent of going to a movie theater, bitching that you've seen it before, and then standing up to wiggle your dick in front the screen so nobody else can watch it.

Ever think to stop playing if you're that bored? Seriously, it's kinda sad when I watch you try and justify this.

Because there are those who threaten the peace, and they must be stopped at all costs. I will not compromise in this!

(Translation: Because they ruin other people's fun, and that is mean.)

On another note, people sometimes mistake "Griever" for "Griefer."

Because they took a noun and verbed it. I hate it when people do that. (yes, I'm aware of the hypocrisy)

(and my probable spelling mistake)

I can understand trolls. They're hate based. But griefing is funny sometimes. Some of it can be hate based, but for the most part it's just another way to play the game, albiet not the best way... When people team kill me I try to join them and mess up the game, I don't rage like I used to. Looking back, raging against griefers is stupid. It's a game. It's ment for fun. It's not ment to be taken seriously. So your stats get messed up slightly. Big deal. What I don't get is why do people take video games so seriously? (Why so serious?)
And no. Do not troll. You can go against my argument, but try not to be scathing.
Because Griefers exist in gaming only to put other people in a state of misery. Those people are assholes and are useless as ultra fanboys to the gaming community as a whole.

well mybe teh prolmbl is dat ur fuckin gay!! YEE.

Nah. It's not that hard to understand, if people want to have fun playing a game, and some dick comes in like"HAY GUYSLOL>LOLOLLLLASFLOLSAOLOLOLOLOLIKIKOLOLOLP:p:OLP:p:OLOL" and blows up the team on purpose for.5.matches. then you start to get a bit pissed off. Most of the time I just lol it away and leave the server or spectate the havoc, either that or I'm trying to have a good time playing and it really annoys me.

I enjoy creative griefing, like Team Roomba's TF2 videos. Team killing bugs the shit out of me on ranked servers though. Seriously, if your going to grief, do it on the social servers.

Ya, I see a large difference in bullies and griefers. Bullies do severe physical or mental damage to people over a period of time. Griefers do slightly annnoying things to people for a few minutes. And why are you so mad at them? Most of you people are getting way to angry about this. It's like those people that do road rage.
Edit: there. Made my definition a little clearer. If people are picking on you, just tell the principle... Besides, all of those other things you added don't really apply to griefers either...
I get mad at them because I hate griefers for what they are- vicious pricks who think they have a god-given right to ruin other peoples' fun for their own enjoyment. If you ask a griefer they'll say that nothing gives their tiny cock a bigger stiffie than frustrating, bullying, taunting and annoying a fellow gamer until he's in a towering rage at the sheer unfairness of the treatment he's being subjected to. Why do you think they make such a big deal over enjoying "noob tears"? Don't give me any bullshit about "it's only a game, no reason to get worked up over it"- the whole POINT of griefing is to make people get worked up over it. They WANT you to get worked up over it. It isn't the actual griefing itself that griefers enjoy, it's the feelings of impotent, frustrated rage and misery they're inflicting on a helpless innocent that is their whole reason for doing it. They aren't doing it because they like being silly in games, they're doing it because they like hurting people, no matter on how petty or minor a level. And I hate people like that. HATE them. I am not overreacting. Griefers, like all bullies and sadists, are complete and utter irredeemable assholes and it's perfectly justified to hate complete and utter irredeemable assholes.

I don't mind griefers when they're actually witty. Sometimes on a really boring L4D day, seeing someone manage to keep his teammates back by healing them as they reach the top of a ladder; that's funny. But someone just shooting his teammates to death then disconnecting is just plain being a jerk.

Then there was Team Roomba's trivia quiz to leave the spawn room. That was actually really well-thought.

Because they go into areas inhabited by noobs and proceed to crush them for fun.

As a former griefer in EEVE Online, I will admit I had my share of lulz.

Griefers are people who mess around in games and don't do what the main objective is.
In that case I can fully understand why people hate them. That would be like playing a long game of chess then at some random point your opponant starts chucking pieces around the room and making up the rules. That wouldn't be very fun.
