Why do people relate "hardcore" gamers to pot-heads?

I hear it all the time as I am both.

In my opinion, and a lot of other people I know, there is nothing better then getting stoned then playing some video games.

Ever seen Grandma's boy? If you haven;t, slap yourself, then go rent it.

D*mn thee, mass media! Thou hast betrayed us all! But seriously, I think it's because of that crazy Florida lawyer, you know, the one who said all games are murder simulating pornography and got disbarred, and also I blame FOX news. The conservative party appears to hate technology that ain't for wire tapping. But still the reason I believe potheads and gamers might be associated is simply mudslinging by the aforementioned crazy lawyers. And now, as I have been up for 36 hours straight, I will go to sleep.

maybe they were playing counter-strike
on one of the many 420/chronic-zone/smoke-all-day servers

i'll admit that i really REALLY enjoy getting quite high and playing ANY good game, as it can really enhance the immersive factors of the game, although I have been clean and free of pot for over two months now (my memory is just now starting to come back :)

they also share some similar quirks - hardcore gamers have an esoteric collection of games, controllers, consoles, box art, and an in depth knowledge of the technical aspects of gaming systems and gameplay elements. hardcore stoners will often have a bizarre looking collection of glass pieces (bongs and pipes), grinders and cases, unique music (stoner metal, psychedelic music, ambient and techno - all music that is greatly enhanced by THC) and an in depth knowledge of the effects of pot, other drugs, urine testing, and the techniques involved in joint/blunt rolling and social smoking etiquette.

I definitely play my games longer when im blazed. that being said I would NEVER call myself a hardcore gamer. Weed helps me stay focused on the game i'm playing considering my ridiculous A.D.D

I've never even heard of someone relating games to drugs.

...
psychonauts (a term based more around psychology, maybe psychosis--i'm not too sure, i haven't played it but i've heard enough about it) could also be linked to psychedelics (drugs to alter the outlook of the world around us, and the world within ourselves--no way of saying that without sounding like a hippie). plus, look at the box art for that game. it looks like an acid trip spilled out of someone's head onto a canvas!

i wouldn't be surprised if some people at rockstar were stoners
There's something I didn't know.

Psychonauts is pretty crazy, but I have to go with Killer 7 for drugiest game.

to be honest, i know even less about killer 7 than i do about psychonauts. i'm less of a gamer and more a musician who likes to be entertained (zero punctuation and unskipable are pretty damn funny, even if i'm not familiar to the game being put under the microscope). the guitar players in my band are the hardcore gamers; they actually have the money and incentive to buy the systems and games. the last real games i bought for myself were conker's bad fur day and nhl 2001 for pc. but i've always been amazed at how the technology has evolved, even if some of the games really haven't.

i always wondered what it would be like to play a game where your character is in the middle of a drug trip. kind of like when you get drunk in grand theft auto 4, or getting knocked out (punch drunk?) in fight night and having to get up. what if it's a salvia trip gone bad, and walls are collapsing around you? what if you have to drive a car on mushrooms or acid?

i have a feeling some strange research is being conducted somewhere. and for once it's not me doing it.

WTF? Do you guys actually play games without getting high first?

jokes aside, I'm not a pothead, though i've prolly smoked more joints than the average person, but when i've been at LAN parties, at least 25% of the people there smoked weed.

As far as I can tell this assumtion has surfaced because of a simple (and quite plausible) situation.

Several people who were *supremely* good at gaming won some competitions and boasted their dumbass mouths off about how they liked to get smoke pot.

Idiots -.-

I'd personally like to lace all the pot in the world (that isnt smoked for medicinal purposes) with cyanide and watch the quality of the human race rise by about 30%. (although since it would be terminating chavs/neds also...probably around 1000%)

Because stoners are about on the same rung of the social ladder as the stereotypical video game-loving nerd.

I kid, it's really because marijuana and video games are like peanut butter and chocolate.

A horible horrible combination that ends in many kids being irreprably harmed from side effects?

Work think I'm a geek, because I study Astrophysics at Uni, I'm not really a geek because, well, I outperform most of them physically.

Uni colleagues think I'm a sporty only kind of guy because I work as a lifeguard, compete in irregular sporting events and coach swimming to a good level, yet I get better grades than them.

Ahhh, best in both worlds and yet I'm looked down by both.

Anyway, Potheads and hardcore gamers? I couldn't think of many things further apart, what a waste of money! Damned pot, I want more games!

Well, Killer 7 is more like a bad trip, but it will make you never want to be alone int the dark ever again.

Showing a drug trip in a game would be cool, but it needs a lot of work on the visual aspect because a drug level could play the same, but you need to work on the asthetics.

I've heard of the relation that all pot-heads are gamers but not the other way. Anyway the relation might be how the general population attributes combines what they think are negative habits with other negative habits.
